Notes: The ultrastructure of the adipose tissue connective tissue, mesothelium and milky spots forming the greater cmentum of sheep and goats was studied. The mixture of connective tissue fibers and adipose tissue is arranged in submesothelial, marginal, and central layers. – The mesothelial cells are covered by a surface coat and are characterized by numerous microvilli and vesicles. The number of milky spots varies greatly. They are commonly found on the surface of the omentum and are covered by modified mesothelial cells; their interior contains macrophages and lymphoid cells.

Notes: [Auszug] Shallow marine benthic communities around Antarctica show high levels of endemism, gigantism, slow growth, longevity and late maturity, as well as adaptive radiations that have generated considerable biodiversity in some taxa. The deeper parts of the Southern Ocean exhibit some unique ...

Notes: Summary A new genus (Protognathia) and family (Protognathiidae) are described for Cirolana bathypelagica Schultz, 1977. The morphology of this unique species proves that the Gnathiidae are closely related to the Cirolanidae. The characters of P. bathypelagica are intermediate between the carnivorous cirolanids and the highly specialized gnathiid fish parasites.

Notes: Summary Antarcturus bovinus n. sp. (Isopoda, Valvifera) is described from the Antarctic Peninsula and the western and southern Weddell-Sea. This species can easily be recognized by the absence of large spines, the spine armature of the dorsal surface characteristic of other species is lacking. Only A. antarcticus Bouvier, 1910, A. coppingeri Miers, 1881, A. granulosus Nordenstam, 1933 and A. lillei Tattersall, 1921 are similar, but A. bovinus n. sp. can be discerned from these by the presence of blunt supraocular spines.

Notes: The isopod Sphaeroma hookeri and many other isopods and peracarids have a sensory spine with laterally inserting sensory hair, positioned in the apical region of the propodal palm of pereopod 1. This spine is innervated by five to eight sensory cells (each giving rise to one cilium) the dendrites of which can be divided into an inner and outer dendritic segment. The cilia are surrounded by an extracellular, electron-dense dendritic sheath. Thirteen enveloping cells are present. The outer dendritic segment (structure beyond the basal bodies) contains two receptor lymph cavities; the inner one lying within the dendritic sheath is homologous with the inner receptor lymph cavity of insects.Scolopales, or tubular bodies, are lacking; their function is probably accomplished by the dendritic sheath. Apically the sensory hair does not have a pore, and the spine is heavily sclerotized. The inner dendritic segment begins with a basal body from which rootlets of different length and thickness extend into the dendrite. In the latter is an accumulation of vesicles. The dendrites keep close contact with other dendrites and the enveloping cells by desmosomal membrane structures. The possible importance of the sensory spine for phylogenetic studies is discussed.
