Notes: An extensive 3 H −3He study was performed to determine detailed characteristics of a regional flow system and a sewage plume over a distance of 4 km in a sand and gravel aquifer at Otis Air Base in Falmouth, Massachusetts. 3 H −3He ages increase with depth in individual piezometer clusters and with distance along flowpaths. However, the age gradient with depth (Δt/Δ z) is smaller in the plume than that in the regional waters, due to the intense recharge in the infiltration beds. The 1960s bomb peak of tritium in precipitation is archived longitudinally along a flowline through the main axis of the plume and vertically in individual piezometer clusters. On the eastern side of the sampling area, where water from Ashumet Pond forces plume water deeper into the flow system, 3 H −3He ages are young at depth because the 3 H −3He “clock” is reset due to outgassing of helium in the pond. A reconstruction of the tritium input functions for the regional and plume samples shows that there is no offset in the peak [3H]+[3Hetrit] concentrations for the plume and regional water, indicating that the water from supply wells for use on the base is young. The 3 H −3He ages and detergent concentrations in individual wells are consistent with the beginning of use of detergents and the time period when their concentrations in sewage would have been greatest. Ages and hydraulic properties calculated using the 3 H −3He data compare well with those from previous investigations and from particle-tracking simulations.

Notes: [Auszug] The residence time of dissolved 230Th in the ocean with respect to sorption by marine particulate phases is sufficiently short that, to a first approximation, the rain rate of particulate 230Th sinking to the sea bed, FTh, is equivalent to the integrated rate of 230Th production by U decay in the ...

Description: Data from sections across the Eurasian Basin of the Arctic Ocean occupied in 1987 and 1991 are used to derive information on the freshwater balance of the Arctic Ocean and on sources of the deep waters of the Nansen, Amundsen and Makarov basins. Using salinity, H218O, and mass balances we estimate the river-runoff and the sea-ice melt water fractions contained in the upper waters of the Arctic Ocean and infer pathways of the river-runoff signal from the shelf seas across the central Arctic Ocean to Fram Strait. The average mean residence time of the river-runoff fraction contained in the Arctic Ocean halocline is determined to be about 11 to 14 years. Pacific water entering through Bering Strait is traced using silicate and its influence on the halocline waters of the Canadian Basin is estimated. Water column inventories of river-runoff and sea-ice melt water are calculated for a section just north of Fram Strait and implications of these inventories for sea-ice export through Fram Strait are discussed. Comparison of the ratios of shelf water, Atlantic water and the deep waters of the Arctic Ocean indicate that the sources of the deep and bottom waters of the Eurasian Basin are located in the Barents and Kara seas.

Description: Long-term measurements of temperature, salinity, as well as the transient tracers tritium, He-3, CFC-11, and CFC-12 have been used to study the renewal rates of deep water in the Greenland Sea. Early evaluation of the data sets revealed an abrupt change in deep water formation around 1980 with a drop in the deep water formation rate from ca. 0.5 Sv to 0.1 Sv. Whereas the data before 1990 were compiled from cruises of opportunity, annual crusies were conducted during the 1990s. The resulting time series allows us to deduce information on the change in water mass properties throughout the water column. In this contribution we explore if and how the observed changes in the hydrographic and tracer properties of the Greenland Sea are related to the forcing at the atmosphere/ocean interface. Additionally, we derive average and single-event related deep water formation rates during the 1990s. Finally, we discuss the impact of the change in deep water formation on the hydrography and the exchange of deep water between the Nordic seas and the Arctic Ocean.

Description: We present a helium isotope record for core TT013-114PC from the central equatorial Pacific (140°W, 4°N, 4432 m water depth) spanning a period of 1 million years. We focus on the time interval from 560 to 800 kyr, largely coinciding with the mid-Pleistocene climate transition (MPT) when the dominant period of the Earth's climate variability shifted from 41 kyr to 100 kyr. The terrigenous 4He concentrations from our study correlate very well with published titanium concentrations in this core strongly supporting the use of terrigenous 4He as a monitor of continental dust. Normalizing titanium and terrigenous 4He concentrations to 3He suggests that the dust supply during the MPT was approximately 30% lower compared to the subsequent period (560-100 kyr). The 3He-normalized barium, aluminum and phosphorus concentrations, trace elements with a predominantly biogenic source in these sediments, are relatively constant. This is in contrast to previous studies that reported an apparent rise of titanium-normalized productivity proxies. Rather than a significant increase in productivity during the MPT, we conclude that the dust flux to the central equatorial Pacific was reduced and that the export productivity was approximately constant during this period of climate reorganization.
