    Description: [1] We study seismic velocity and attenuation structures in the top 400 km of the Earth's inner core based on modeling of differential traveltimes, amplitude ratios, and waveforms of the PKiKP-PKIKP phases observed at the epicentral distance range of 120°–141° and the PKPbc-PKIKP phases observed at the distance range of 146°–160° along equatorial paths. Our data are selected from the seismograms recorded in the Global Seismographic Network from 1990 to 2001 and many regional seismic networks. The observed PKiKP-PKIKP and PKPbc-PKIKP phases exhibit distinctive “east-west” hemispheric patterns: (1) At the distance ranges of 131°–141° and 146°–151°, PKIKP phases arrive about 0.3 s earlier than the theoretical arrivals based on the Preliminary Reference Earth Model (PREM) for the PKIKP phases sampling the “eastern hemisphere” (40°E–180°E) of the inner core and about 0.4 s later for those sampling the “western hemisphere” (180°W–40°E). At the distance range of 151°–160°, PKIKP phases arrive about 0.7 s earlier than the predicted arrivals based on PREM for those sampling the eastern hemisphere and about 0.1 s later for those sampling the western hemisphere. (2) Amplitude ratios of the PKIKP/PKiKP phases at the distance range of 131°–141° and of the PKIKP/PKPbc phases at the distance range of 146°–151° are, in general, smaller for the PKIKP phases sampling the eastern hemisphere than for those sampling the western hemisphere. At distances greater than 151°, the PKIKP/PKPbc amplitude ratios become indistinguishable for the two hemispheres. These observations can be best explained by two different types of seismic velocity and attenuation models along equatorial paths, one for each hemisphere, in the top 400 km of the inner core. For the eastern hemisphere, the velocity structure has a velocity increase of 0.748 km/s across the inner core boundary (ICB), a small velocity gradient of 0.0042 (km/s)/100 km in the top 235 km, followed by a steeper velocity gradient of 0.1 (km/s)/100 km extending from 235 km to 375 km, and a velocity gradient of 0.01 (km/s)/100 km in the deeper portion of the inner core; the attenuation structure has an average Q value of 300 in the top 300 km and an average Q value of 600 in the deeper portion of the inner core. For the western hemisphere, the velocity structure has a velocity increase of 0.645 km/s across the ICB and a velocity gradient of 0.049 (km/s)/100 km in the top 375 km; the attenuation structure has an average Q value of 600 in the top 375 km of the inner core. Our results suggest that the inner core hemispheric variations in velocity extend deeper than 375 km below the ICB and the top 235 km of the inner core in the eastern hemisphere is anomalous compared to the rest of the inner core in having a small velocity gradient, high velocity, and high attenuation.

    Description: We report complex seismic anisotropy in the top 80 km of the Earth's inner core beneath Africa. The anisotropy in the top 80 km of the inner core is constrained using differential travel times, amplitude ratios, and waveforms of the PKiKP-PKIKP phases sampling Africa along various directions. The differential PKiKP-PKIKP time residuals (relative to the Preliminary Reference Earth Model [PREM]) along the polar paths are larger than those along the equatorial paths by 0–1.4 s, indicating the presence of seismic anisotropy in the top 80 km of the inner core. Furthermore, the observations along the polar paths show complex regional variations beneath Africa: the differential PKiKP-PKIKP travel time residuals vary from 1.2 s beneath eastern Africa, to −0.1 s beneath central Africa, and to −0.2 to 0.8 s beneath western Africa. A correlation between small PKIKP/PKiKP amplitude ratios and large differential PKiKP-PKIKP travel time residuals is observed. The waveform data are spatially binned into six groups to constrain the regional dependence of velocity and attenuation anisotropy in the top 80 km of the inner core. Overall, the seismic data can be explained by an isotropic upper inner core (UIC) overlying an anisotropic lower inner core (LIC) in the top 80 km of the inner core across Africa. The thickness of the isotropic UIC varies from 0 to 50 km, and the P velocity transition from the isotropic UIC to the anisotropic LIC is sharp, with velocity increases laterally varying from 1.6% to 2.2%. The attenuation structure along the polar paths has a Q value of 600 for the isotropic UIC and Q values varying from 150 to 400 for the anisotropic LIC. The complex seismic anisotropy in the top of the inner core is found in a region where a rapid change of the inner core boundary (ICB) between 1993 and 2003 was discovered (Wen, 2006) and may be explained by complex alignments of iron crystals, resulting from a localized anomalous solidification of the inner core.

    Notes: Spectral properties of blue upconversion luminescences in Tm3+ doped tellurite (PWT, PbF2-WO3-TeO2) glasses and germanate (PWG, PbF2-WO3-GeO2) glasses pumped by a tunable dye laser were studied at room temperature. Two emission bands centered at 453 and 477 nm, corresponding to the 1D2→3H4 and 1G4→3H6 transitions of Tm3+ ions respectively, were observed. The two-photon absorption mechanism responsible for the 477 nm luminescence was confirmed by a quadratic dependence of luminescent intensities on the excitation power. Tellurite glasses showed a weaker upconversion luminescence than germanate glasses. This observation was inconsistent with the prediction from the phonon sideband measurement. In this article, Raman spectroscopy and transmittance measurement were employed to investigate the origin of the difference in upconversion luminescences in the two glasses. Compared with phonon sideband spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy extracts more information, including both phonon energy and phonon density, and therefore, is a more effective analytical tool for understanding upconversion luminescence. Our results showed that the phonon energy as well as phonon density of the host glass is important in determining the upconversion efficiency. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Background : Patients undergoing transarterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma have advanced tumour or severe cirrhosis and frequently have associated protein-calorie malnutrition. The role of nutritional supplements for such patients is unclear.Aim : To investigate, in a randomized controlled trial, any benefit of the long-term administration of branched chain amino acids in patients undergoing chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma.Methods : Forty-one patients received oral branched chain amino acids for up to four courses of chemoembolization and 43 patients did not receive any nutritional supplement. Morbidity, liver function, nutritional status, quality of life and long-term survival were compared between the two groups.Results : The administration of branched chain amino acids resulted in a lower morbidity rate compared with the control group (17.1% vs. 37.2%, P = 0.039). In particular, the group given branched chain amino acids showed a significantly lower rate of ascites (7.3% vs. 23.2%, P = 0.043) and peripheral oedema (9.8% vs. 27.9%, P = 0.034). Significantly higher serum albumin, lower bilirubin and a better quality of life were observed after chemoembolization in the group given branched chain amino acids. However, there was no significant difference in survival between the two groups.Conclusions : Nutritional supplementation with oral branched chain amino acids is beneficial in increasing the serum albumin level, reducing the morbidity and improving the quality of life in patients undergoing chemoembolization for inoperable hepatocellular carcinoma.

    Notes: Abstract Systemic hypothermia has been shown to exert neuroprotective effects in experimental ischemic CNS models caused by vascular occlusions. The present study addresses the question as to whether systemic hypothermia has similar neuroprotective qualities following severe spinal cord compression trauma using microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2) immunohistochemistry combined with the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method as marker to identify neuronal and dendritic lesions. Fifteen rats were randomized into three equally sized groups. One group sustained thoracic laminectomy, the others severe spinal cord compression trauma of the T8-9 segment. The control group contained laminectomized animals submitted to a hypothermic procedure in which the esophageal temperature was reduced from 38 °C to 30 °C. The two trauma groups were either submitted to the same hypothermic procedure or kept normothermic during the corresponding time. All animals were sacrificed 24 h following the surgical procedure. The MAP2 immunostaining in the normothermic trauma group indicated marked reductions in MAP2 antigen in the cranial and caudal peri-injury zones (T7 and T10, respectively). This reduction was much less pronounced in the hypothermic trauma group. In fact, the MAP2 antigen was present in almost equally sized areas in both the hypothermic groups independent of previous laminectomy alone or the addition of trauma. Our study thus indicates that hypothermia has a neuroprotective effect on dendrites of rat spinal cords subjected to compression trauma.

    Notes: Abstract  Potato microtubers are used as pathogen-tested in vitro stocks for certified seed potato production. Microtubers grown in a rotating bioreactor grew at a faster rate when the medium was replaced frequently. Although the total microtuber number was not affected, the number of microtubers over 1 g quadrupled when 75% of the medium was replaced every 2 weeks when compared with no medium refreshment. Significantly slower microtuber growth rates resulted when a lower sugar concentration (40 g 1−1 instead of 80 g 1−1) was used or when a mixture of glucose and fructose replaced sucrose. Although high sucrose levels are necessary for optimal microtuber production, the sucrose supplied was rapidly hydrolyzed into glucose and fructose, making the long-term maintenance of desirable sucrose levels difficult. These results indicate that successful strategies to reduce sucrose hydrolysis without inhibiting microtuber growth will improve the efficiency of sucrose utilization in potato microtuber bioreactors.
