Abstract: Advancing technologies and constantly changing market needs induce competition between organizations and force enterprises to adopt better management methods to improve operational performance to survive and make profits. Knowledge management has been widely recognized as one of the effective methods to achieve the above objective. Previous researches of knowledge management chiefly focused on qualitative approaches, and largely stressed key success factors of knowledge management, such as the infrastructure of information technology, the design of the knowledge management system, deployment of motivation schemes, and the like. Among them, the knowledge spiral of socialization, externalization, connection, and internalization are the core of researches and discussions. However, early studies only disclosed the necessary cyclical phenomenon of knowledge management. A quantitative method revealing how the existing knowledge can support the creation of new knowledge or upgrade current knowledge remains non-existent. To bridge this gap, this study proposes a mathematical model which can quantify the supporting effects of the existing knowledge on the creation of new knowledge. The model evaluates knowledge from the perspectives of complexity (knowledge type/knowledge area) and depth (knowledge level), and the results of the example illustrate that the proposed model can be an effective method of measuring the usefulness of the existing knowledge.

Abstract: Objectives: The aims of the present study were to examine the current psychiatric comorbidity among children and adolescents with and without persistent attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as compared to school controls, and to determine the factors predicting psychiatric comorbidity. Method: The sample included 296 patients (male, 85.5%), aged 11–17, who were diagnosed with DSM-IV ADHD at the mean age of 6.7 ± 2.7 years and 185 school controls. The ADHD and other psychiatric diagnoses were made based on clinical assessments and confirmed by psychiatric interviews. The ADHD group was categorized into 186 patients (62.8%) with persistent ADHD and 110 (37.2%) without persistent ADHD. Results: Compared to the controls, the two ADHD groups were more likely to have oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD), tics, mood disorders, past and regular use of substances, substance use disorders and sleep disorders (odds ratios (ORs) = 1.8–25.3). Patients with persistent ADHD had higher risks for anxiety disorders, particularly specific phobia than the controls. Moreover, patients with persistent ADHD were more likely to have ODD than their partially remitted counterparts. Advanced analyses indicated that more severe baseline ADHD symptoms predicted ODD/CD at adolescence; longer methylphenidate treatment duration was associated with an increased risk for tics and ODD/CD at adolescence; and older age predicted higher risks for mood disorders and substance use disorders. Conclusion: Reduced ADHD symptoms at adolescence may not lead to decreased risks for psychiatric comorbidity, and identification of severe ADHD symptoms at childhood and age-specific comorbid patterns throughout the developmental stage is important to offset the long-term adverse psychiatric outcomes of ADHD.

Abstract: Based on the perspective of organisational capability and learning orientation, this study posits that knowledge resources influence firm performance through a positive effect on organisational capability. Tests on a sample of 133 Chinese firms show that organisational learning orientation moderates in a positive relationship between knowledge resources and firm performance. A mediated moderation model is further tested and it is found that organisational capability mediates in the relationship linking the interaction between knowledge resources and learning orientation with firm performance. Discussions of theoretical and practical implications are included as well.

Abstract: In the present study, the oleanolic acid (OA) and ursolic acid (UA) contents of Hedyotis diffusa and H. corymbosa were determined by a rapid, selective and accurate method combining modified ultrasound-assisted extraction (MUAE) and HPLC. Compared with traditional extraction methods, MUAE reduced the extraction time, the extraction temperature and the solvent consumption and maximized the extraction yields of OA and UA. Furthermore, the combined MUAE–HPLC method was applied to quantitate OA and UA in plant samples and exhibited good repeatability, reproducibility and stability. The mean recovery studies (one extraction cycle) for OA and UA were between 91.3 and 91.7% with RSD values less than 4.5%. The pioneer method was further applied to quantitate OA and UA in six samples of H. diffusa and five samples of H. corymbosa. The results showed that the OA and UA content in the samples from different sources were significantly different. This report is valuable for the application of H. diffusa and H. corymbosa obtained from different regions in clinical research and pharmacology.

Abstract: This study proposed a recognized system for electroencephalogram (EEG) data classification. In addition to the wavelet-based amplitude modulation (AM) features, the fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering is used for the discriminant of left finger lifting and resting. The features are extracted from discrete wavelet transform (DWT) data with the AM method. The FCM is then applied to recognize extracted features. Compared with band power features, k-means clustering, and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classifier, the results indicate that the proposed method is satisfactory in applications of brain–computer interface (BCI).

Abstract: Objective: The aim of the present study was to examine changes of attention-deficit–hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and psychiatric comorbidities at adolescence, and mother-child agreement on reports of ADHD symptoms among children with ADHD as compared to unaffected controls. Methods: The participants included 93 patients (male, 82.8%) aged 11–16, who were clinically diagnosed with ADHD at the mean age of 7.3 ± 2.8 years, and 93 age-, sex-, and parental education-matched school controls. The participants and their mothers were frist interviewed separately for baseline psychopathology at childhood, followed by current psychopathology using the Chinese Kiddie Epidemiologic version of the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia. Results: At adolescence, 46 patients (49.5%) met full DSM-IV ADHD criteria, 31 (33.3%) had subthreshold ADHD, and 16 (17.2%) had recovered from ADHD. We found a significant progressive decline in the three ADHD core symptoms for the ADHD group: hyperactivity had the greatest effect size, followed by inattention, and then impulsivity. Children with ADHD tended to report less severe ADHD symptoms at childhood and adolescence than their mothers. They were more likely than the controls to have oppositional defiant disorder (odds ratio (OR)=18.0; 95% confidence interval (CI)=8.3–38.9), conduct disorder (OR=23.1, 95%CI =5.3–100.2), mood disorders (OR=3.8, 95%CI = 1.5–9.4), bipolar disorders (Fisher's exact p 〈 0.001), and sleep disorders (OR=3.1, 95%CI = 1.6–6.0) at adolescence. Conclusions: The present findings are similar to those of Western studies, regarding the patterns of comorbidity, stability of core symptoms, and mother–child differences on symptom reports.

Abstract: In this study, we report the isolation from the stem of Syzygium kusukusense of five triterpenes, 2α-hydroxybetulinic acid (1), betulinic acid (2), platanic acid (3), ursolic acid (4), and hyptatic acid A (5). All were identified for the first time from this indigenous plant of Taiwan. Assessment of the cytotoxic activities of these compounds against a panel of human tumor cell lines, including MCF-7 breast, PC-3 prostate, and SCC2095 oral squamous cell cancers, revealed the high potency of compounds 1 (IC 50 , 5.7 – 7.6 μM) and, especially, 4 (IC 50 , 1.7 – 3.7 μM) in suppressing cell viability, which warrants further mechanistic investigations.
