    Description: SUMMARY To provide rapid estimates of fault rupture extent during large earthquakes, we have developed the Fin ite Fault Rupture De tecto r algorithm, ‘FinDer’. FinDer uses image recognition techniques to detect automatically surface-projected fault ruptures in real-time (assuming a line source) by estimating their current centroid position, length L , and strike θ. The approach is based on a rapid high-frequency near/far-source classification of ground motion amplitudes in a dense seismic network (station spacing 〈50 km), and comparison with a set of pre-calculated templates using ‘Matching by Correlation’. To increase computational efficiency, we perform the correlation in the wavenumber domain. FinDer keeps track of the current dimensions of a rupture in progress. Errors in L are typically on the same order as station spacing in the network. The continuously updated estimates of source geometries as provided by FinDer make predicted shaking intensities more accurate and thus more useful for earthquake early warning, ShakeMaps, and related products. The applicability of the algorithm is demonstrated for several recorded and simulated earthquakes with different focal mechanisms, including the 2009 M w 6.3 L’Aquila (Italy), the 1999 M w 7.6 ChiChi (Taiwan) and the M w 7.8 ShakeOut scenario earthquake on the southern San Andreas Fault (California).

    Description: SUMMARY A central problem of seismology is the inversion of regional waveform data for models of earthquake sources. In regions such as Southern California, preliminary 3-D earth structure models are already available, and efficient numerical methods have been developed for 3-D anelastic wave-propagation simulations. We describe an automated procedure that utilizes these capabilities to derive centroid moment tensors (CMTs). The procedure relies on the use of receiver-side Green's tensors (RGTs), which comprise the spatial-temporal displacements produced by the three orthogonal unit impulsive point forces acting at the receivers. We have constructed a RGT database for 219 broad-band stations in Southern California using a tomographically improved version of the 3-D SCEC Community Velocity Model Version 4.0 (CVM4) and a staggered-grid finite-difference code. Finite-difference synthetic seismograms for any earthquake in our modelling volume can be simply calculated by extracting a small, source-centred volume from the RGT database and applying the reciprocity principle. The partial derivatives needed for the CMT inversion can be generated in the same way. We have developed an automated algorithm that combines a grid-search for suitable focal mechanisms and hypocentre locations with a Gauss–Newton optimization that further refines the grid-search results. Using this algorithm, we have determined CMT solutions for 165 small to medium-sized earthquakes in Southern California. Preliminary comparison with the CMT solutions provided by the Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN) shows that our solutions generally provide better fit to the observed waveforms. When applied to a large number of earthquakes, our algorithm may provide a more robust CMT catalogue for earthquakes in Southern California.

    Description: Pancreatic islets, transplanted into recipients with type 1 diabetes, are exposed to allogenic and auto-immune T-cell responses. We set out to develop an assay to measure these responses using PBMC. Our approach was to prepare spleen extract from the islet donors (allo-antigen) and islet extracts (auto-antigen). To our surprise, we found that spleen extracts potently inhibited the proliferation of human T cells driven by antigen (tetanus toxoid) and mitogen (anti-CD3 mAb, OKT3), whereas extracts prepared from pancreatic islets from the same donor did not suppress T-cell proliferation. Suppression mediated by spleen extracts was unaffected by blocking mAbs against the IL-10R, transforming growth factor-β or CD152 (CTLA-4). It was also unaffected by denaturing the spleen extracts by heating, exposing to reducing agents or protease digestion. Because deceased organ donors are commonly given the immunosuppressive glucocorticoid methylprednisolone prior to death, we hypothesized that suppression was due to residual methylprednisolone in the spleen extracts. Methylprednisolone could be detected by mass spectrometry in spleen extracts at concentrations that suppress T-cell proliferation. Finally, the glucocorticoid receptor antagonist mifepristone completely reversed the suppression caused by the spleen extracts. We conclude that extracts of human spleen, but not islets, from deceased organ donors contain sufficient residual methylprednisolone to suppress the proliferation of T-cells in vitro .

    Description: SUMMARY We investigate the chaotic behaviour of slip pulses that propagate in a spring block slider model with velocity weakening friction by numerically solving a computationally intensive set of n coupled non-linear equations, where n is the number of blocks. We observe that the system evolves into a spatially heterogeneous pre-stress after the occurrence of a sufficient number of events. We observe that, although the spatiotemporal evolution of the amplitude of a slip pulse in a single event is surprisingly complex, the geometric description of the pulses is simple and self-similar with respect to the size of the pulse. This observation allows us to write an energy balance equation that describes the evolution of the pulse as it propagates through the known pre-stress. The equation predicts the evolution of individual ruptures and reduces the computational time dramatically. The long-time solution of the equation reveals its multiscale nature and its potential to match many of the long-time statistics of the original system, but with a much shorter computational time.

    Description: SCUBA-2 is a 10 000-bolometer submillimetre camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The instrument commissioning was completed in 2011 September, and full science operations began in 2011 October. To harness the full potential of this powerful new astronomical tool, the instrument calibration must be accurate and well understood. To this end, the algorithms for calculating the line-of-sight opacity have been improved, and the derived atmospheric extinction relationships at both wavebands of the SCUBA-2 instrument are presented. The results from over 500 primary and secondary calibrator observations have allowed accurate determination of the flux conversion factors (FCF) for the 850 and 450 μm arrays. Descriptions of the instrument beam shape and photometry methods are presented. The calibration factors are well determined, with relative calibration accuracy better than 5 per cent at 850 μm and 10 per cent at 450 μm, reflecting the success of the derived opacity relations as well as the stability of the performance of the instrument over several months. The sample size of the calibration observations and accurate FCFs have allowed the determination of the 850 and 450 μm fluxes of several well-known submillimetre sources, and these results are compared with previous measurements from SCUBA.

    Description: Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 (SCUBA-2) is an innovative 10 000 pixel bolometer camera operating at submillimetre wavelengths on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The camera has the capability to carry out wide-field surveys to unprecedented depths, addressing key questions relating to the origins of galaxies, stars and planets. With two imaging arrays working simultaneously in the atmospheric windows at 450 and 850 μm, the vast increase in pixel count means that SCUBA-2 maps the sky 100–150 times faster than the previous SCUBA instrument. In this paper, we present an overview of the instrument, discuss the physical characteristics of the superconducting detector arrays, outline the observing modes and data acquisition, and present the early performance figures on the telescope. We also showcase the capabilities of the instrument via some early examples of the science SCUBA-2 that have already been undertaken. In 2012 February, SCUBA-2 began a series of unique legacy surveys for the JCMT community. These surveys will take 2.5 yr and the results are already providing complementary data to the shorter wavelength, shallower, larger area surveys from Herschel . The SCUBA-2 surveys will also provide a wealth of information for further study with new facilities such as ALMA, and future telescopes such as CCAT and SPICA .
