    Abstract: The dielectric polarizations induced by impurity ions in both high- and low-resistivity nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) were investigated. Upon adding carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a dopant, the former showed no distinct change in the low-frequency ( 〈 10 2  Hz) dielectric spectrum, whereas the latter exhibited dramatic decrease in dielectric constant in that the CNTs remarkably trapped the impurity ions in the NLC of high ionic content. Consequently, the dopant raised the voltage holding ratio by 26% and prolonged the lifetime of the cell. Also investigated were ionic behaviors in the low-resistivity NLC confined in cells with three different configurations. The diffusion constant of the ions in homeotropic cells was found to be the greatest, and the dc conductivity, determined by the diffusion constant, was also higher in the homeotropic ones.

    Abstract: The transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) is crucial in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis; yet its role and underlying mechanism in the formation of macrophage foam cells remain unclear. Here, we show increased TRPV1 expression in the area of foamy macrophages in atherosclerotic aortas of apolipoprotein E-deficient mice. Exposure of mouse bone-marrow-derived macrophages to oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) upregulated the expression of TRPV1. In addition, oxLDL activated TRPV1 and elicited calcium (Ca 2+ ) influx, which were abrogated by the pharmacological TRPV1 antagonist capsazepine. Furthermore, oxLDL-induced lipid accumulation in macrophages was ameliorated by TRPV1 agonists but exacerbated by TRPV1 antagonist. Treatment with TRPV1 agonists did not affect the internalization of oxLDL but promoted cholesterol efflux by upregulating the efflux ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters ABCA1 and ABCG1. Moreover, the upregulation of ABC transporters was mainly through liver X receptor α - (LXR α -) dependent regulation of transcription. Moreover, the TNF- α -induced inflammatory response was alleviated by TRPV1 agonists but aggravated by the TRPV1 antagonist and LXR α siRNA in macrophages. Our data suggest that LXR α plays a pivotal role in TRPV1-activation-conferred protection against oxLDL-induced lipid accumulation and TNF- α -induced inflammation in macrophages.

    Abstract: Aim . To investigate the factors contributing to health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in Chinese patients with chronic liver disease (CLD). Methods . HRQOL was measured with SF-36v2 Chinese version. Demographic and clinical data were collected, and patients with liver cirrhosis were divided into Child’s Class A, B, and C according to Child-Turcotte-Pugh scoring system. Results . A total of 392 Chinese patients with CLD and 91 healthy controls were enrolled. HRQOL in patients with CLD was lower than that in healthy controls. Score of PCS in healthy controls was 54.6 ± 5.5 and in CLD was 47.8 ± 8.8 ( P = 0.000 ). Score of MCS in healthy controls was 56.4 ± 8.1 and in CLD was 51.7 ± 7.4 ( P = 0.000 ). Increasing severity of CLD from no cirrhosis to advanced cirrhosis was associated with a decrease on all domains of the SF-36 ( P 〈 0.05 ). Stepwise linear regression analysis showed that severity of disease, age, present ascites, present varices, and prothrombin time had significant effect on physical health area. Severity of disease, female, present varices, total bilirubin, prothrombin time, and hemoglobin had significant effect on mental health area. Conclusions . Patients with CLD had impaired HRQOL. Increasing severity of CLD was associated with a decrease on HRQOL. Old age, female gender, advanced stage of CLD, present ascites, hyperbilirubinemia, and prolonging prothrombin time were important factors reducing HRQOL.

    Abstract: As epitope mimics, mimotopes have been widely utilized in the study of epitope prediction and the development of new diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines. Screening the random peptide libraries constructed with phage display or any other surface display technologies provides an efficient and convenient approach to acquire mimotopes. However, target-unrelated peptides creep into mimotopes from time to time through binding to contaminants or other components of the screening system. In this study, we present SAROTUP, a free web tool for scanning, reporting and excluding possible target-unrelated peptides from real mimotopes. Preliminary tests show that SAROTUP is efficient and capable of improving the accuracy of mimotope-based epitope mapping. It is also helpful for the development of mimotope-based diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines.

    Abstract: Electroacupuncture (EA) is a complementary therapy to improve morphine analgesia for postoperative pain, but underlying mechanism is not well-known. Herein, we investigated EA-induced analgesic effect in a plantar incision (PI) model in male Sprague-Dawley rats. PI was performed at the left hind paw. EA of 4 Hz and high intensity or sham needling was conducted at right ST36 prior to PI and repeated for another 2 days. Behavioral responses to mechanical and thermal stimuli, spinal phospho-ERK, and Fos expression were all analyzed. In additional groups, naloxone and morphine were administered to elucidate involvement of opioid receptors and for comparison with EA. EA pretreatment significantly reduced post-PI tactile allodynia for over 1 day; repeated treatments maintained analgesic effect. Intraperitoneal naloxone could reverse EA analgesia. Low-dose subcutaneous morphine (1 mg/kg) had stronger inhibitory effect on PI-induced allodynia than EA for 1 h. However, analgesic tolerance appeared after repeated morphine injections. Both EA and morphine could equally inhibit PI-induced p-ERK and Fos inductions. We conclude that though EA and morphine attenuate postincision pain through opioid receptor activations, daily EA treatments result in analgesic accumulation whereas daily morphine injections develop analgesic tolerance. Discrepant pathways and mechanisms underlying two analgesic means may account for the results.

    Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum levels of OPG, TGF- β 1, and TGF- β 2 and BMD decrease rate (BDR) in native Chinese women. This cross-sectional study was performed on 465 healthy native Chinese women aged 35–80 years. Serum levels of OPG, TGF- β 1, and TGF- β 2 were determined. BDR was measured by DXA at the posteroanterior spine, hip, and distal forearm. At all skeletal sites tested, there was a negative correlation between BDR and serum levels of both OPG ( r = − 0.122 to –0.230, all P = 0.007–0.000) and TGF- β 2 ( r = − 0.100 to –0.173, all P = 0.029–0.000) and a positive correlation between BDR and serum TGF- β 1 ( r = 0.245 − 0.365 , all P = 0.000 ). After adjustment for age and BMI, there were no statistically significant correlations between serum levels of OPG or TGF- β 2 and BDR. However, statistically significant correlations between serum TGF- β 1 and BDR at the lumbar spine and ultradistal forearm remained. Multiple linear regression stepwise analysis showed that serum OPG could explain 1.4–3.7% of BDR variation. Serum TGF- β 1 was a positive determinant of BDR and could explain 5.3–13.3% of BDR variation.

    Abstract: Hydrophobically modified associating polyacrylamide (HAPAM) has good compatibility with the Daqing heavy alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactant. The HAPAM alkali/surfactant/polymer (ASP) system can generate ultralow interfacial tension in a wide range of alkali/surfactant concentrations and maintain stable viscosity and interfacial tension for 120 days. The HAPAM ASP system has good injectivity for the Daqing class II reservoirs (100–300 × 10 −3   μ m 2 ) and can improve oil recovery by more than 25% on top of water flooding. In the presence of both the alkali and the surfactant, the surfactant interacts with the associating groups of the polymer to form more micelles, which can significantly enhance the viscosity of the ASP system. Compared with using HPAM ( M w   =   2.5  MDa), using HAPAM can reduce the polymer use by more than 40%.

    Abstract: Chalcones, which have characteristic 1,3-diaryl-2-propen-1-one skeleton, are mainly produced in roots, rhizomes, heartwood, leaves, and seeds of genera Angelica, Sophora, Glycyrrhiza, Humulus, Scutellaria, Parartocarpus, Ficus, Dorstenia, Morus, Artocarpus , and so forth. They have become of interest in the research and development of natural antitumor agents over the past decades due to their broad range of mechanisms including anti-initiation, induction of apoptosis, antiproliferation, antimetastasis, antiangiogenesis, and so forth. This review summarizes the studies on the antitumor activity of naturally occurring chalcones and their underlying mechanisms in detail during the past decades.
