Abstract: We present evidence of topological surface states in β-Ag2Te through first-principles calculations, periodic quantum interference effect and ambipolar electric field effect in single crystalline nanoribbon. Our first-principles calculations show that β-Ag2Te is a topological insulator with a gapless Dirac cone with strong anisotropy. To experimentally probe the topological surface state, we synthesized high quality β-Ag2Te nanoribbons and performed electron transport measurements. The coexistence of pronounced Aharonov-Bohm oscillations and weak Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak oscillations clearly demonstrates coherent electron transport around the perimeter of β-Ag2Te nanoribbon and therefore the existence of topological surface states, which is further supported by the ambipolar electric field effect for devices fabricated by β-Ag2Te nanoribbons. The experimental evidences of topological surface states and the theoretically predicted anisotropic Dirac cone of β-Ag2Te suggest that the material may be a promising candidate of topological insulator for fundamental study and future spintronic devices.

Abstract: Ultraviolet (UV)-ozone photo-annealing was applied to fabricate low-temperature high-performance solution-processed thin-film transistors (TFTs). With UV-ozone treatment at the optimal temperature of 300 °C, TFT devices showed an improved field-effect mobility of 1.73 cm2 V−1 s−1, a subthreshold slope (S) of 0.32 V dec−1, an on/off-current ratio greater than 1.3 × 107, and good operational bias-stress stability compared to those of InGaZnO TFT devices fabricated with only a conventional thermal-annealing process. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the maximum density of the surface states (Ns) confirm that the device improvement originates from reduced oxygen-related defects and improved electron trapping due to UV-ozone irradiation.

Abstract: By the introduction of a generalized magnetic vector potential, which contains the contributions of both the magnetic and electric parts, and the use of the Ampere's law within the quasistatic approximation as the state equation, the partial differential equations for governing the electromagnetic properties of superconductors as well as the surrounding coolant were established and numerically discretized by resorting to the finite-element technique and finite-difference scheme, respectively, in the spatial and temporal domain. In conjunction with an analytic method to calculate the magnetic field generated by permanent magnet, we compiled a numerical tool for performing an intricate study of the mutual effect among the superconducting constituents in a superconducting levitation system with translational symmetry. Taking a superconducting unit with three constituents inside as a practice, we simulated the electromagnetic responses of this unit while moving in the nonuniform magnetic field generated by permanent magnet guideway and, identified the influences of the mutual effect on the levitation force as well as on the distributions of the magnetic flux density, the supercurrent density, and the levitation force density by comparing to an envisaged reference, one constituent was simulated with all the rest absent to remove the mutual effect. The insights attained by the present study, mostly being inaccessible from the experiments, are aimed to provide useful implications for the design of a superconducting levitation system for the transit and analogous purposes, which usually employ multiple superconductors to achieve the desired capability.

Abstract: A continuous roll-to-roll compatible blade-coating method for multi-layers of general organic semiconductors is developed. Dissolution of the underlying film during coating is prevented by simultaneously applying heating from the bottom and gentle hot wind from the top. The solvent is immediately expelled and reflow inhibited. This method succeeds for polymers and small molecules. Uniformity is within 10% for 5 cm by 5 cm area with a mean value of tens of nanometers for both organic light-emitting diode (OLED) and solar cell structure with little material waste. For phosphorescent OLED 25 cd/A is achieved for green, 15 cd/A for orange, and 8 cd/A for blue. For fluorescent OLED 4.3 cd/A is achieved for blue, 9 cd/A for orange, and 6.9 cd/A for white. For OLED with 2 cm by 3 cm active area, the luminance variation is within 10%. Power conversion efficiency of 4.1% is achieved for polymer solar cell, similar to spin coating using the same materials. Very-low-cost and high-throughput fabrication of efficient organic devices is realized by the continuous blade-only method.

Abstract: It has recently been predicted that the surface plasmons are allowed to exist on the interface between a topological insulator and vacuum. Surface plasmons can be employed to enhance the optical emission from various illuminants. Here, we study the photoluminescence properties of the ZnO/Bi2Te3 hybrid structures. Thin flakes of Bi2Te3, a typical three-dimensional topological insulator, were prepared on ZnO crystal surface by mechanical exfoliation method. The ultraviolet emission from ZnO was found to be enhanced by the Bi2Te3 thin flakes, which was attributed to the surface plasmon – photon coupling at the Bi2Te3/ZnO interface.

Abstract: High-quality BN-Graphene-BN nanoribbon capacitors with double side-gates of graphene have been experimentally realized. The double side-gates can effectively modulate the electronic properties of graphene nanoribbon capacitors. By applying anti-symmetric side-gate voltages, we observed significant upward shifting and flattening of the V-shaped capacitance curve near the charge neutrality point. Symmetric side-gate voltages, however, only resulted in tilted upward shifting along the opposite direction of applied gate voltages. These modulation effects followed the behavior of graphene nanoribbons predicted theoretically for metallic side-gate modulation. The negative quantum capacitance phenomenon predicted by numerical simulations for graphene nanoribbons modulated by graphene side-gates was not observed, possibly due to the weakened interactions between the graphene nanoribbon and side-gate electrodes caused by the Ga+ beam etching process.

Abstract: Theoretical and experimental AC loss data on a superconducting pancake coil wound using second generation (2 G) conductors are presented. An anisotropic critical state model is used to calculate critical current and the AC losses of a superconducting pancake coil. In the coil there are two regions, the critical state region and the subcritical region. The model assumes that in the subcritical region the flux lines are parallel to the tape wide face. AC losses of the superconducting pancake coil are calculated using this model. Both calorimetric and electrical techniques were used to measure AC losses in the coil. The calorimetric method is based on measuring the boil-off rate of liquid nitrogen. The electric method used a compensation circuit to eliminate the inductive component to measure the loss voltage of the coil. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical calculations thus validating the anisotropic critical state model for loss estimations in the superconducting pancake coil.

Abstract: We present a 1D/2D switchable grating based on field-induced polymer stabilized blue phase liquid crystal (PSBPLC). For 1D grating, the diffraction efficiency of the first order is 37.2% and the phase modulation depth of the 1D grating can achieve 2π. For 2D grating, more than 90% of light intensity is distributed to the surrounding orders of zero order and the phase modulation depth is about 3.67π. Furthermore it shows fast phase modulation and 1D/2D switching time.

Abstract: The linear and nonlinear rheological measurements were utilized to study the mechanical response of concentrated mixtures of colloidal particles with opposite charges. The particle volume fraction ($\iPhi$Φ) spans the region from low volume fraction ($\iPhi$Φ = 0.18) gel to high volume fraction ($\iPhi$Φ = 0.53) glass. In the linear viscoelastic region, the storage moduli G′ exhibits deferent $\iPhi$Φ dependence at low and high $\iPhi$Φ’s. It follows a power law relationship as G′ ∼ $\iPhi$Φ6.2±0.2 for $\iPhi$Φ & lt; 0.46, and follows an exponential relationship as G′ ∼ exp[(13.8 ± 0.6)$\iPhi$Φ] for $\iPhi$Φ ≥ 0.46. The difference can be taken as a distinction between a colloidal gel and an attractive glass (or dense gel) for the present system. The loss moduli G″ is almost frequency independent within the whole experimental frequency range (10−1–102 rad/s) for colloidal gel, and G″ exhibi ts a weak minimum for attractive glass. In the nonlinear large amplitude rheological measurement, samples with $\iPhi$Φ & lt; 0.46 show one-step yielding, and samples with $\iPhi$Φ ≥ 0.46 exhibit two-step yielding which is in agreement with numerous experiments in attractive glassy systems. The first yielding is due to the breaking of short range interactions which bond the interconnected clusters or local clusters, while the second yielding is attributed to the breaking of long range interaction, normally the caging forming or glass forming interactions. The qualitative distinction between attractive glass and gel in terms of their yielding behavior is consistent with the linear rheological results. The particle-particle interactions were modulated by salt concentration. It was found that, when the attraction interaction is enhanced, both yielding points in attractive glass shift to higher strain amplitude and the gap between the two yielding points become more separated.
