    Notes: The obstetrical outcome of pregnancy in primigravid patients aged 16 years or less of three racial groups, white, Cape coloured and Bantu, is compared. Each group consisted of 100 consecutive patients.The major differences found were an increased incidence of cephalo-pelvie disproportion and associated high Caesarean section rate in the Cape coloured and Bantu groups, a lower rate of engagement of the fetal head before labour in the non-white patients and a high prematurity rate in the Cape coloured group.An equally high incidence of toxaemia of pregnancy was found in all racial groups and the increased incidence of this syndrome in the young primigravid patient was confirmed.

Der Kliniker wird mit den Verletzungen der inneren Organe des Brust- und Bauchraumes seltener konfrontiert als der Pathologe. Bei der klinischen Diagnostik werden am häufigsten übersehen die Rippenserienfraktur und Wirbelfraktur, das intrakranielle Hämatom und eine Verletzung der parenchymatösen Bauchorgane.
    Notes: Summary The autopsy reports of 939 accidental deaths were evaluated and compared with the clinical data of those of the patients who had received clinical therapy. Intrathroacic and intra-abdominal injuries are seen less often by the clinician then by the pathologist. The lesions most frequently overlooked in clinical diagnosis are fractures of the ribs and of the vertebral spine, intracranial haematomas, and injuries of intra-abdominal parenchymatous organs.

    Description: The scope of this Science Plan is to describe the scientific background, applications, and activities related to the EnMAP mission. Primarily, the Science Plan addresses scientists and funding institutions, but it may also be of interest for environmental stakeholders and governmental bodies. It is conceived to be a living document that will be updated throughout the whole mission. Current global challenges call for interdisciplinary approaches. Hence, the science plan is not structured in the traditional disciplinary way. Instead, it builds on overarching research themes to which EnMAP can contribute. This Science Plan comprises the following five chapters presenting the significance, background, framework, applications, and strategy of the EnMAP mission: Chapter 2 highlights the need for EnMAP data with respect to major environmental issues and various stakeholders. This chapter states the mission’s main objectives and provides a list of research themes addressing global challenges to whose understanding and management EnMAP can contribute. Chapter 3 presents an overview of the EnMAP mission from a scientific point of view including a brief description of the mission parameters, data products and access, and calibration/validation issues. Chapter 4 provides an overview of hyperspectral remote sensing regarding its principles, development, and current state and synergies to other satellite missions. Chapter 5 describes current lines of research and EnMAP applications to address the research themes presented in Chapter 2. Finally, Chapter 6 outlines the scientific exploitation strategy, which includes the strategy for community building, dissemination of knowledge and increasing public awareness.

    Description: The sediment flux through Himalayan rivers directly impacts water quality and is important for sustaining agriculture as well as maintaining drinking-water and hydropower generation. Despite the recent increase in demand for these resources, little is known about the triggers and sources of extreme sediment flux events, which lower water quality and account for extensive hydropower reservoir filling and turbine abrasion. Here, we present a comprehensive analysis of the spatiotemporal trends in suspended sediment flux based on daily data during the past decade (2001–2009) from four sites along the Sutlej River and from four of its main tributaries. In conjunction with satellite data depicting rainfall and snow cover, air temperature and earthquake records, and field observations, we infer climatic and geologic controls of peak suspended sediment concentration (SSC) events. Our study identifies three key findings: First, peak SSC events (≥ 99th SSC percentile) coincide frequently (57–80%) with heavy rainstorms and account for about 30% of the suspended sediment flux in the semi-arid to arid interior of the orogen. Second, we observe an increase of suspended sediment flux from the Tibetan Plateau to the Himalayan Front at mean annual timescales. This sediment-flux gradient suggests that averaged, modern erosion in the western Himalaya is most pronounced at frontal regions, which are characterized by high monsoonal rainfall and thick soil cover. Third, in seven of eight catchments, we find an anticlockwise hysteresis loop of annual sediment flux variations with respect to river discharge, which appears to be related to enhanced glacial sediment evacuation during late summer. Our analysis emphasizes the importance of unconsolidated sediments in the high-elevation sector that can easily be mobilized by hydrometeorological events and higher glacial-meltwater contributions. In future climate change scenarios, including continuous glacial retreat and more frequent monsoonal rainstorms across the Himalaya, we expect an increase in peak SSC events, which will decrease the water quality and impact hydropower generation.
