    Notes: Each childbirth education class has a group life of its own, and the responsibility for the group functioning is shared among all members. Experiential learning derived through group functioning has the potential for being as significant as the learning of specific skills. Formulating a contract between the teacher/leader and the members of the class can help in clarifying realistic objectives and goals. The teacher/leader can assist couples to learn new behavior and to confront their own feelings about becoming parents.

    Notes: The protozoan Tetrahymena pyriformis W was used to test quality of protein concentrates from Chenopodium leaves (LPC) in the unprocessed, frozen, freeze-dried, decolorized, or oven-dried states. All unsupplemented LPCs supported poor cell growth except the decolorized, when isonitrogenous casein was used as reference standard. Supplementation with methionine to a level equivalent to casein improved growth highly significantly; as did the combined methionine and lysine supplementation. It appeared that LPC under suitable conditions of preparation and supplementation could improve cereal-based diets to the same degree as an equivalent amount of protein from casein. Use of this organism for routine assay of available protein is encouraging enough to warrant further research.

    Description: Strong and strategic collaborations among experts from academia, federal operational centers, and industry have been forged to create a U.S. IOOS Coastal and Ocean Modeling Testbed (COMT). The COMT mission is to accelerate the transition of scientific and technical advances from the coastal and ocean modeling research community to improved operational ocean products and services. This is achieved via the evaluation of existing technology or the development of new technology depending on the status of technology within the research community. The initial phase of the COMT has addressed three coastal and ocean prediction challenges of great societal importance: estuarine hypoxia, shelf hypoxia, and coastal inundation. A fourth effort concentrated on providing and refining the cyberinfrastructure and cyber tools to support the modeling work and to advance interoperability and community access to the COMT archive. This paper presents an overview of the initiation of the COMT, the findings of each team and a discussion of the role of the COMT in research to operations and its interface with the coastal and ocean modeling community in general. Detailed technical results are presented in the accompanying series of 16 technical papers in this special issue.

    Description: [1]  We identify electromagnetic field variations from the Van Allen Probes which have the properties of Doppler shifted kinetic scale Alfvénic field line resonances. These variations are observed during injections of energetic plasmas into the inner magnetosphere. These waves have scale-sizes perpendicular to the magnetic field which are determined to be of the order of an ion gyro-radius ( ρ i ) and less. Cross-spectral analysis of the electric and magnetic fields reveals phase transitions at frequencies correlated with enhancements and depressions in the ratio of the electric and magnetic fields. Modeling shows that these observations are consistent with the excitation of field-line resonances over a broad range of wavenumbers perpendicular to the magnetic field ( k ⊥ ) extending to k ⊥ ρ i  ≫ 1. The amplitude of these waves is such that E / B o  ≳ Ω i / k ⊥ ( E ,  B o and Ω i are the wave amplitude, background field strength and ion gyro-frequency respectively) leading to ion demagnetization and acceleration for multiple transitions through the wave potential.

    Description: IntroductionTardigrades are an ancient lineage of microinvertebrates with a unique metameric pattern consisting of a head and four lobopodal leg-bearing segments. While their close relationship to Onychophora and Arthropoda is well established, many questions remain about the structure and origin of the tardigrade metameric pattern. For example, the relationship of the tardigrade head to that of Arthropoda and Onychophora remains a contentious issue. One source of contention stems from disagreement about the structure of the tardigrade brain. The availability of developmental tools for the tardigrade Hypsibius dujardini give this species the potential to clarify questions regarding the relationship of tardigrade segmental patterns to those in Arthropoda and Onychophora. Here we investigate the nervous system, muscle system, and cuticle anatomy of H. dujardini using high-resolution microscopy methods. Results: We characterized nervous system anatomy of H. dujardini using a combination of anti-? -tubulin staining and DAPI staining and muscle system anatomy using phalloidin staining. We identified several brain lobes: paired outer lobes, paired inner lobes, and a single horseshoe shaped ventral lobe. We also characterized similarities and differences in the nervous system and muscle system anatomy of the four body segments. Based on these, we detect distinct morphological identities for each segment in this species. Conclusions: Based on comparisons of our results to previous reports, we find support for an ancestral tardigrade brain exhibiting architecture similar to that of H. dujardini. Comparisons to other tardigrade species suggest that each segment in the ancestral tardigrade possessed a unique morphological identity, rather than exhibiting strictly homonomous segmentation, and thus that differentiation of anterior segment identities arose prior to the diversification of panarthropodan lineages. This hypothesis can be further tested by examination of the expression boundaries of anterior Hox genes, which differentiate anterior segments through a mechanism conserved between onychophorans and arthropods. Our investigation of H. dujardini segmental morphologies will facilitate developmental genetic studies in this species that promise to illuminate the relationship of the tardigrade metameric pattern to that of other panarthropods.

    Description: Background: Epidemiologic data collected during epidemics in the western United States combined with limited experimental studies involving swine and cattle suggest that host predilection of epidemic vesicular stomatitis New Jersey virus (VSNJV) strains results in variations in clinical response, extent and duration of virus shedding and transmissibility following infection in different hosts. Laboratory challenge of livestock with heterologous VSNJV strains to investigate potential viral predilections for these hosts has not been thoroughly investigated. In separate trials, homologous VSNJV strains (NJ82COB and NJ82AZB), and heterologous strains (NJ06WYE and NJOSF [Ossabaw Island, sand fly]) were inoculated into cattle via infected black fly bite. NJ82AZB and NJ06WYE were similarly inoculated into swine. Results: Clinical scores among viruses infecting cattle were significantly different and indicated that infection with a homologous virus resulted in more severe clinical presentation and greater extent and duration of viral shedding. No differences in clinical severity or extent and duration of viral shedding were detected in swine. Conclusions: Differences in clinical presentation and extent and duration of viral shedding may have direct impacts on viral spread during epidemics. Viral transmission via animal-to-animal contact and insect vectored transmission are likely to occur at higher rates when affected animals are presenting severe clinical signs and shedding high concentrations of virus. More virulent viral strains resulting in more severe disease in livestock hosts are expected to spread more rapidly and greater distances during epidemics than those causing mild or inapparent signs.
