Notes: [Auszug] If kallikrein is the in vivo activator of prorenin, a negative correlation between kallikrein (urinary or plasma) and the proportion of prorenin (prorenin/total renin) may be expected. In 13 normal human volunteers, urinary kallikrein excretion and plasma prekallikrein concentration were correlated ...

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Hospital diet is an essential part of modern therapy in all medical departments. It comprises both the so-called normal diets which are prepared according to modern nutritional knowledge, dietetic foods and the various forms of artificial nutrition (nutrient-defined and chemically defined diets, parenteral and combined nutrition, i.e. enterai and parenteral nutrition). The integration of nutritional therapeutic problems into the treatment of patients requires optimal scientific and practical forms of organisation of nutrition in the clinic. For that purpose, cooperation of clinical, technical, economic and pedagogic divisions is of prime importance. The organisation of patient nutrition in the St. Georg District Hospital in Leipzig is described as a feasible model.

Notes: Summary Body size is the best overall indicator of the abilities of the cladocerans Daphnia magna, D. parvula, Ceriodaphnia lacustris and Bosmina longirostris to filter natural bacteria (〈1.0 μm). However, species differences exist which cannot be inferred from differences in size, behavior, or morphology alone. The relationship between filtering rate (FR in ml animal-1h-1) and body length (L in mm) for the cladocerans studied can be described by the power function: $$\begin{gathered} FR = 0.538 L^{1.545} \hfill \\ (r^2 = 0.88, F = 168.54, P 〈 0.001). \hfill \\ \end{gathered}$$ In D. parvula, algal filtering rates are higher and increase more rapidly with increasing body size than do bacterial filtering rates which are 26 to 33% of algal rates. This suggests that different processes may be involved in the capture of these ultrafine particles and that ultrafine particle capture efficiency decreases with increasing body size within a species. Weight specific filtering rates (in μl μg dry wt-1h-1) have a strong negative relationship to body size and show species specific differences. Appendage beat rates intersetular distances, setule diameter, appendage, area, % open space on the filtering appendage, Reynolds number, and boundary layer thickness do not provide simple predictions of bacterial filtering rates for the cladocerans studied. Filtering rates on cultured laboratory bacteria and algae may not indicate filtering rates on natural bacterioplankton because of differences in bacterial size, motility, and surface properties. Uptake of ultrafine particles may be enhanced by the presence of larger, more readily filtered particles through a “piggybacking” phenomenon.

Notes: Summary Activities of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), glycerolphosphate oxidase (GP-OX), cytochrome oxidase (CYT-OX) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were determined microphotometrically in single, actomyosin-ATPase typed (Guth and Samaha 1970) fibres within cross-sections of normal and reinnervated rat tibialis anterior muscles. SDH and GP-OX activities displayed pronounced scattering and large overlaps existed between α-, αβ-, and β-fibres of normal muscle. Coefficients of variation were in the range of 16–40% for GP-OX and SDH in the different fibre populations. Enzyme activity determinations in typegrouped α-, αβ-, and β-fibres of reinnervated muscle showed much less scattering than in normally distributed α-, αβ-, and β-fibres of control muscles. Coefficients of variation were in the range of 10–13% for SDH, GP-OX, CYT-OX and LDH. The experimental error of the kinetic microphotometric measurement of enzyme activities in situ is in the range of 10% (Reichmann and Pette 1982). Our results therefore suggest a high degree of metabolic similarity or homogeneity of typed-grouped muscle fibres and thus support the assumption that type-groped fibres are homogeneous and correspond to regularly assembled motor units.

Notes: Abstract In an organism (strain C 1/2 from Dr. P. R. Hayes, Leeds) regarded as a typical representative of the genus Flavobacterium, flexirubin-type pigments have been identified. The Flavobacterium pigments contain structural elements of both, the pigments of the genus Flexibacter and the pigments of the genus Cytophaga. As flexirubin-type pigments seem to have a rather restricted distribution among bacteria, and have formerly proved to be useful chemosystematic markers for the flexibacteria, this new observation may indicate that there is a relatively close phylogenetic relationship between this type of flavobacteria and the Cytophaga-Flexibacter group.

Notes: Abstract Studies with radioactive leucine, isoleucine, valine and acetate showed that in Flavobacterium spec. strain C1/2 leucine can function as the precursor of the terminally branched alkyl substituents in flexirubin-type pigments.

Notes: Abstract A high-efficiency collection device for sex pheromones volatized from forcibly extruded female glands is described. Filtered nitrogen gas is the carrier and glass wool the adsorbent. Small quantities of distilled carbon disulfide are used to rinse the glass wool. Recovery efficiency of synthetic compounds was usually 90–100%, and a mean of 2.4 ± 0.65 SD ng/min of (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate was recovered in emissions from individualTrichoplusia ni (Hubner) glands.

Notes: Summary When threatened, the black widow spider, Latrodectus hesperus, emits an adhesive, viscous web, pulls the strand from its spinnerets with its fourth pair of legs, and spreads its appendages. This behavior positions the web over the delicate abdomen, increases the area of protection, and enables the spider to place the web onto the offender, if necessary. In laboratory interactions, the viscous web protected black widows from mice (Peromyscus spp.). Mature female spiders, which had their spinnerets blocked and hence could not discharge the viscid silk, escaped less often than did black widows that were not experimentally altered. The viscid silk is palatable to mice and it appears that the deterrent effect of the web is due solely to mechanical irritation. The defensive behavior is elicited most often from mature females, which may suffer greater predation than other age groups. Males lose the ability to produce the defensive web at maturity and may shift their energy resources totally into reproductive effort.

Notes: Abstract Each of the seven compounds that have been identified from femaleHeliothis virescens sex pheromone glands was examined for its ability to elicit sexual responses from male moths in a flight tunnel. The two compounds initially described as pheromone components, (itZ)-11-hexadecenal and (itZ)-9-tetradecenal, were necessary for behavioral activity to occur. Of the remaining five compounds, hexadecanal was most consistent in elevating behavioral activity of males when it was added to treatments. Live, calling females elicited greater sexual activity from males than did the 7-compound mixture on rubber septa.
