    Notes: Ag-sheathed powder-in-tube wires on the basis of the high Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3Ox are produced by a drawing process. After cold working, the wires are not superconducting. By heat treatment at temperatures 〉900 °C, lattice defects are healed and the contact between the grains is improved. After this heat treatment the wires are slowly cooled in an O2 atmosphere in order to adjust the optimum O2 stoichiometry. The annealing temperature has a strong influence on the attainable critical current density. By annealing a wire with 420 ppm carbon content at 950 °C, jc values of 5020 A/cm2 at 4.2 K and 1130 A/cm2 at 77 K were achieved. Drastically reduced critical current densities in wires with high carbon content demonstrate the importance of a low carbon content for achieving high critical current densities in YBa2Cu3Ox .

    Notes: The synchrotron radiation spectra of toroidal grating monochromators (TGM) working in the short wavelength VUV are often contaminated by significant amounts of higher orders. Even by the use of suitable filters they cannot completely be suppressed. Using a transmission grating behind the exit slit of the monochromator the exit beam can be dispersed and the contributions of the different orders analyzed. For the 162° TGM at the radiometric laboratory of PTB at BESSY the higher-order distributions have been quantitatively determined for two gratings of line densities of 200 and 600 l/mm at electron beam energies of 337 and 756 MeV. It is shown that at the energy of 337 MeV and the wavelength region between 5 and 45 nm the contributions of the higher orders to the detector signal are restricted to less than 10% even without the use of filters. At the energy of 756 MeV the same result can be achieved by inserting suitable filters.

    Notes: Breeding planning and variety valuation can be supported only if weighting factors for the economically relevant performance traits are available. In plant breeding they are necessary for the calculation of selection indices as well as for the comparison of varieties and for quantifying the monetary impact of breeding progress.In this article the economic weights for the most important performance traits of sugar beet are calculated from the farmer's, the sugar factory's, and the national economy's point of view. Based upon economic weights for beet yield, sugar content, potassium, sodium, and ammo nitrogen content, a total of 19 varieties was compared with regard to physical and economic performance. The investigation shows that “best” and “worst” varieties differ in gross margin per ha by 270.— to 330.— DM.Indications were given for possibilities and limitations of the application of economic weights in breeding planning.

    Notes: The effect of increasing doses (15 mg, 30 mg and 60 mg) of the substituted benzimidazole, AG-1749, on gastric acid secretion and fasting serum gastrin concentration has been studied after repeated administration to healthy volunteers.AG-1749 produced a dose-dependent and profound decrease in basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion in all volunteers, with almost total suppression at the highest dose. The extent of inhibition increased between Day 2 and Day 8 with the 15 and 30 mg doses of AG-1749. The inhibitory effect of AG-1749 appears to be fully reversible as control levels of acid output were reached 7 days after drug withdrawal.Seven days’dosing with 60 mg AG-1749 induced a more than threefold increment of fasting serum gastrin concentration, but this increase was still within the normal range. Seven days after cessation of dosing, fasting serum gastrin concentration returned to a pre-dose level.

    Notes: There are two major principles of ulcer therapy. Today, the most widely accepted drugs are those which substantially reduce aggressive factors (i.e. acid and pepsin), namely histamine H2-receptor antagonists, antimuscarinics and antacids. Less frequently applied are mucoprotective agents like colloidal bismuth compounds and sucralfate. Prostaglandins both reduce acid secretion substantially and are believed to enhance mucosal resistance. Their anti-ulcer efficacy, however, is solely explicable by their antisecretory activity. Although mucosa-strengthening agents and H2-receptor blockers have nearly identical healing rates, mucosa-strengthening agents have inconvenient dosage regimens (four times or twice daily) and are probably less effective in relieving pain. The same holds true for antacids. Prostaglandins, antimuscarinics and antacids have dose related side effects. In contrast, H2-receptor blockers are characterized by a clear mechanism of action, convenient dosage regimes, good tolerance and a low incidence of side-effects. H2-receptor antagonists are the most effective anti-ulcer drugs presently available.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die präoperativen Ergebnisse der Computertomographie (CT) (n = 59) and digitalen Subtraktionsangiographie (DSA) (n = 14) wurden mit dem intraoperativen Situs and dem pathologisch-histologischen Befund verglichen. Die Tumorgröße wurde mit dem CT in 69% (Differenz kleiner als 20%) richtig eingeschätzt, in 31% (Differenz größer als 20%) überschätzt. Die Überlegenheit der Computertomographie bestand in der Darstellung von intratumorösen Veränderungen, Darstellung der betroffenen Muskelkompartimente and der Lagebeziehung des Tumors zum Knochen and großen Gefäßen. Spezielle morphologische, computertomographische Kriterien fanden sich nur beim Rhabdomyosarkom und Liposarkom, eindeutige präoperative Aussagen bezüglich des zu erwartenden histologischen Befundes waren nur beim Lipom möglich. Die DSA war hilfreich zur Beurteilung der Gefäßbeteiligung and Gefäßversorgung, zur differentialdiagnostischen Eingrenzung (maligne - benigne) trug das Verfahren nur in 70% bei. Bei peripheren Weichteiltumoren (Unterschenkel, Unterarm) ist die arterielle DSA der venösen vorzuziehen. Die Angiographie sollte nach der CT-Untersuchung eingesetzt werden and speziellen Fällen vorbehalten sein.
    Notes: Summary The preoperative results of computed tomography (CT) (n = 59) and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) (n =14) were compared with the intraoperative site and the pathological histological finding. The tumor size was correctly estimated by CT in 69% (difference less than 20%), and overestimated in 31% (difference greater than 20%). The superiority of CT consisted in the visualization of intratumor alterations and the representation of the muscle compartments concerned and of the spatial relationship of the tumor to the bone and large vessels. Specific morphological CT criteria were found only in rhabdomyosarcoma and liposarcoma. Unequivocial preoperative appraisals with regard to the histological finding to be expected wer possible only in the case of lipoma. DSA was helpful for evaluation of vascular involvement and vascularization. The technique contributed to differential diagnosis (malignant-benign) in only 70%. In peripheral soft-tissue tumors (lower leg, forearm), arterial DSA is preferable to venous DSA. Angiography should be employed after the CT investigation and reserved for specific cases.

    Notes: Summary In isolated rat pancreatic islets exogenous glutathione which is not able to penetrate into cells, augmented glucose (11.1 mmol/l)-mediated insulin release. In the presence of a non-stimulatory glucose concentration (2.8 mmol/l) glutathione had no effect. The half-maximal synergistic action of glutathione on insulin secretion was observed at approximately 8.0 μmol/l. This concentration of glutathione is similar to that found in the plasma of non-fasted anaesthetised rats (6.5 μmol/l). Oral ingestion of glucose increased the arterial plasma glutathione in rats. Our data provide for the first time indirect evidence for a modulating effect of plasma glutathione in postprandial glucose-mediated insulin secretion which appears to be located at the extracellular site of islet cells.
