Notes: Diamond films were deposited by hot cathode direct current discharge plasma chemical vapor deposition from a CH4–H2 gas mixture. Optical emission spectroscopy was employed to investigate in situ the plasma emission characterization during diamond synthesis. The dependence of plasma emission spectra on the input CH4/H2 ratio and the substrate temperature was investigated. A significant variation in the emission intensity of the CH radical was measured with a change in the CH4 concentration. C2 was detected only at high CH4 concentration. In addition, the relative emission intensity of the C2 species was sensitive to a high substrate temperature. The correlation between the spectra of some species and the quality of diamond films was studied. These results suggest that CH and CH+ are all important precursor species in the diamond deposition reaction, while C2 is associated with the presence of a nondiamond phase in the films. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Based on the Ludwik-Davidenkov-Orowan theory, a new criterion of BDT for polymer blends is proposed. In this approach fracture stress (σb) and shear yielding stress (σy) governing the brittle-ductile transition (BDT) of polymer blends is combined into a dimensionless group as Da = σb 2/σy 2. The theory dictates that BDT occurs at a critical condition Dac = 1, brittle fracture occurs when Da 〈 1, and ductile fracture occurs when Da 〉 1. It can be shown that Da = Fg · Lym/LD, where Lym measures the length of shear band of the matrix, LD is a parameter determined by the morphology and interfacial adhesion of dispersed phase, and Fg is related to specimen geometry and other extrinsic parameters. It is suggested that the onset of BDT depends on the competition between the Lym and LD. With due consideration to blend morphology, interfacial adhesion and matrix properties, existing experimental evidence supports the applicability of the proposed criterion.

Notes: Abstract A downwardf-looking acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP), suspended by a series of surface and subsurface floats and connecte to an anchroed ship, proided a quite stable platform to measure the, vertical profiles of backscatter strenght *BS) and three components of the velocith from 12 to 22 November 1992 at 1°30′S and 156°15′E, in the Intensive Flux Array (IFA) of TOGA/COARE. While the variability of the horizontal velocity was controlled by the semi-diurnal tide, BS and vertifal velocity were dominated by diurnal variability probably caused by the diel migration of zooplakton. The downward migration occurred early in the moring (0500–0700 in local time) and the upward one late in the afternoon (1700–1900). The average values of about 4 cm s−1 for the sinking and rising speed were estimated from Doppler shift and BS isopleth displacement. The subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) coincident with the top of the thermocline at 80–100 m was also detectable in the BS data during daytime when almost no migrating zooplankton remained in the upper 300 m. Backscatter signals from the SCM and thermocline were separated by corrlating the BS data with the chlorophylla and temperature data. The maximum contribution of the migrating zooplanktion, passively drifting phytoplankton and temperature gradient on BS was estimated to be 14.8, 7.0, 5.1 dB, respectively.

Notes: Abstract An L to Q band upconverter using finline configuration is developed. The conversion losses of 9.45±0.35 dB are achieved over 400MHz bandwidth. A more effective 180° hybrid and a planar backshort are used in the finline upconverter.

Notes: Hydrogenation of 10% aqueous solution of 3-hydroxypropanal (HPA) was adiabatically carried out over cylindrical Ni/SiO2/Al2O3-catalyst pellets (∅ 0.8 + 5 mm) in a trickle bed (∅ 76 × 5200 mm) at 2.6 to 8.0 MPa. The concentration and temperature profiles in the trickle-bed were measured at different flow rates of liquid. A mathematical model was developed under consideration of heat transfer, interphase mass transfer, intraparticle diffusion and deactivation of catalyst pellets at partial wetting with different wetting geometries. The model fits the measured data satisfactorily when its kinetics of deactivation is modified by a factor determined by regression of data measured in the trickle bed.

Description: Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) index is strongly correlated with vertically integrated transport carried by the Kuroshio through the East China Sea (ECS). Transport was determined from satellite altimetry calibrated with in situ data and its correlation with PDO index (0.76) is highest at zero lag. Total PDO-correlated transport variation carried by the ECS-Kuroshio and Ryukyu Current is about 4 Sv. In addition, PDO index is strongly negatively correlated, at zero lag, with NCEP wind-stress-curl over the central North Pacific at ECS latitudes. Sverdrup transport, calculated from wind-stress-curl anomalies, is consistent with the observed transport variations. Finally, PDO index and ECS-Kuroshio transport are each negatively correlated with Kuroshio Position Index in the Tokara Strait; this can be explained by a model in which Kuroshio path is steered by topography when transport is low and is inertially controlled when transport is high.

Description: ABSTRACT A series of shikonin derivatives, selectively acylated by various fluorinated carboxylic acids at the side chain of shikonin, were synthesized and their anticancer activity evaluated, in which eight compounds are reported for the first time. Among all the compounds tested, compound showed the most potent anticancer activity against B16-F10 (malignant melanoma cells), MG63 (human osteosarcoma cells), and A549 (lung cancer cells) with IC 50 0.39 ± 0.01, 0.72 ± 0.04 and 0.58 ± 0.02 µmol/L. Docking simulation of compound was carried out to position into a tubulin active site to determine the probable binding conformation. All the results suggested that compound may be a potential anticancer agent. Chirality 00:000–000, 2013 . © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
