    Description: The application of stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is emerging. To identify pretreatment prognostic indicators is crucial for patient selection and optimal individual therapy. The aim of this study was to determine whether 18 F-FDG PET and a combined 18 F-FDG–contrast CT parameter could be useful tools to predict tumor control for patients with HCC treated by SABR. Methods: We retrospectively identified 31 patients (41 tumors) who underwent 18 F-FDG PET before SABR between November 2007 and September 2011. 18 F-FDG PET parameters were collected as prognostic indicators, including visual PET scale (+/–), maximal standardized uptake value (SUV) of the tumor (T SUVmax ), ratio of T SUVmax to maximal normal-liver SUV, ratio of T SUVmax to mean normal-liver SUV, and score combining tumor volume and T SUVmax (CT/ 18 F-FDG PET score). They underwent SABR with a median dose of 42 Gy (ranging from 30 to 50 Gy) in 4–5 fractions. 18 F-FDG PET parameters and clinical factors were tested as predictors of tumor control and patient survival. Results: The median follow-up time was 18 mo. Among the parameters examined, T SUVmax and CT/ 18 F-FDG PET score were significantly correlated with tumor control. T SUVmax with a cutoff value of 3.2 was the most significant prognostic indicator. The 4-y control rate was 86.2% in tumors with a T SUVmax of 3.2 or less but only 37.5% in those with a T SUVmax of more than 3.2 (adjusted hazard ratio, 9.40; 95% confidence interval, 1.18–74.76; P = 0.034). CT/ 18 F-FDG PET score (≤4 vs. 〉4) was also a significant predictor of tumor control after SABR. Tumors with a CT/ 18 F-FDG PET score of more than 4 had a 5.23-fold risk of tumor failure. After adjustment for factors of sex, American Joint Committee on Cancer stage, Cancer of the Liver Italian Program score, and Child–Pugh classification, tumors with a score of more than 4 had a 4.96-fold risk of failure after SABR, compared with tumors with a score of 4 or less. For overall survival, none was statistically significant. Conclusion: The use of 18 F FDG PET to predict tumor control is feasible. T SUVmax with a cutoff value of 3.2 is the best prognostic indicator. We suggest that 18 F-FDG PET may be a reference for prognostic prediction, patient selection, and radiation dose adjustment for HCC patients treated with SABR.

    Description: The Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) is an effort by the international marine carbon research community. It aims to improve access to carbon dioxide measurements in the surface oceans by regular releases of quality controlled and fully documented synthesis and gridded fCO2 (fugacity of carbon dioxide) products. SOCAT version 2 presented here extends the data set for the global oceans and coastal seas by four years and has 10.1 million surface water fCO2 values from 2660 cruises between 1968 and 2011. The procedures for creating version 2 have been comparable to those for version 1. The SOCAT website (http://www.socat.info/) provides access to the individual cruise data files, as well as to the synthesis and gridded data products. Interactive online tools allow visitors to explore the richness of the data. Scientific users can also retrieve the data as downloadable files or via Ocean Data View. Version 2 enables carbon specialists to expand their studies until 2011. Applications of SOCAT include process studies, quantification of the ocean carbon sink and its spatial, seasonal, year-to-year and longer-term variation, as well as initialisation or validation of ocean carbon models and coupled-climate carbon models.

Version 2 of SOCAT is an update of the previous release (version 1) with more data (increased from 6.3 million to 10.1 million surface water fCO2 values) and extended data coverage (from 1968–2007 to 1968–2011). The quality control criteria, while identical in both versions, have been applied more strictly in version 2 than in version 1. The SOCAT website (http://www.socat.info/) has links to quality control comments, metadata, individual data set files, and synthesis and gridded data products. Interactive online tools allow visitors to explore the richness of the data. Applications of SOCAT include process studies, quantification of the ocean carbon sink and its spatial, seasonal, year-to-year and longerterm variation, as well as initialisation or validation of ocean carbon models and coupled climate-carbon models.

    Description: Organic matter in surface sediments from the upper reach of the Pearl River Estuary and Lingdingyang Bay, as well as the adjacent northern South China Sea shelf was characterized using a variety of techniques, including elemental (C and N) ratio, bulk stable organic carbon isotopic composition (δ13C), and carbohydrate composition analyses. Total organic carbon (TOC) content was 1.21±0.45% in the upper reach, down to 1.00±0.22% in Lingdingyang Bay and to 0.80±0.10% on the inner shelf and 0.58±0.06% on the outer shelf. δ13C values ranged from −25.1‰ to −21.3‰ in Lingdingyang Bay and the South China Sea shelf, with a trend of enrichment seawards. The spatial trend in C/N ratios mirrored that of δ13C, with a substantial decrease in C/N ratio offshore. Total carbohydrate yields ranged from 22.1 to 26.7 mg (100 mg OC)−1, and typically followed TOC concentrations in the estuarine and shelf sediments. Total neutral sugars, as detected by the nine major monosaccharides (lyxose, rhamnose, ribose, arabinose, fucose, xylose, galactose, mannose, and glucose), were between 4.0 and 18.6 mg (100 mg OC)−1 in the same sediments, suggesting that significant amounts of carbohydrates were not neutral aldoses. Using a two end-member mixing model based on δ13C values and C/N ratios, we estimated that the terrestrial organic carbon contribution to the surface sediment TOC was ca. 78±11% for Lingdingyang Bay, 34±4% for the inner shelf, and 5.5±1% for the outer shelf. The molecular composition of the carbohydrate in the surface sediments also suggested that the inner estuary was rich in terrestrially derived carbohydrates but that their contribution decreased offshore. A relatively high abundance of deoxyhexoses in the estuary and shelf indicated a considerable bacterial source of these carbohydrates, implying that sediment organic matter had undergone extensive degradation and/or transformation during transport. Sediment budget based on calculated regional accumulation rates showed that only ~50% of the influxes of terrestrial organic carbon were accumulated in the estuary. This relatively low accumulation efficiency of terrestrial organic matter as compared to the total suspended solids (accumulation efficiency ~73%) suggested significant degradation of the terrestrial organic carbon within the estuarine system after its discharge from the river. This study demonstrated that the combination of the bulk organic matter properties together with the isotopic composition and molecular-level carbohydrate compositions can be an efficient way to track down the source and fate of organic matter in highly dynamic estuarine and coastal systems. The predominance of terrestrially originated organic matter in the sediment and its generally low accumulation efficiency within the estuary is not surprising, and yet it may have important implications in light of the heavy anthropogenic discharges into the Pearl River Estuary during the past thirty years.

    Notes: Dyschromatosis symmetrica hereditaria (DSH) is a pigmentary genodermatosis of autosomal dominant inheritance characterized by a mixture of hyperpigmented and hypopigmented macules distributed on the dorsal aspects of the hands and feet. It is caused by mutations of the RNA-specific adenosine deaminase gene. We report the identification of a Chinese family with a three-generation pedigree of DSH, in whom a novel tyrosine substitution mutation in DSRAD was demonstrated: a heterozygous nucleotide A→G transition at position 2879 in exon 10 of the DSRAD gene was detected.

    Notes: Marie Unna hereditary hypotrichosis (MUHH) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder with progressive hair loss starting in early childhood and aggravating at puberty. Several studies have mapped the MUHH gene to chromosome 8p21. Here we report a Chinese MUHH family with variable phenotypes. All affected individuals have anomalies affecting both hair density and hair shafts. Major clinical characteristics, disease history and histological examination support the diagnosis of MUHH, but the features of scarring in this kindred are modest and none of the patients have vertex hair loss, which is in contrast with typical MUHH. We now report genotyping and linkage analysis using 11 polymorphic microsatellite markers spanning the MUHH locus at 8p. Two-point linkage analysis using these markers revealed significant exclusion of this locus (log of the odds scores 〈 − 2) at θ = 0 indicating that there is a range of clinical presentations in MUHH, and that more than one genetic locus is responsible for the disorder.

    Notes: This article presents computation of optical gain and threshold current density in InGaN–AlGaN quantum wire and dot lasers in the presence of dislocations and surface states. The exciton binding energy including the effect of strain induced piezoelectric field is calculated to be 10–80 meV in InGaN–AlGaN quantum wires and dots, depending on the lateral and transverse dimensions. In contrast to the conventional GaAs or InP based quantum wires, these high binding energy results in large exciton densities, making optical transitions due to excitons dominant over free electrons and holes. Optical gain and threshold current density in InGaN–AlGaN based multiple quantum wire and dot lasers are computed including the effect of dislocation-induced traps. The calculated threshold current density Jth for defect free compressive-strained InGaN quantum wire (50 Å×50 Å) and dot (50 Å × 50 Å × 50 Å) lasers, realized on sapphire or SiC substrates, are shown to yield ultralow threshold current density of 233 and 88 A/cm2, respectively. In the presence of dislocations (1×1010 cm−2), the threshold current densities only increase to 924 and 623 A/cm2 for the same wire and dot, when we include the contribution of excitonic transitions. However, the corresponding values increase significantly to 30 838 and 11 647 A/cm2 if the exciton enhancement is not included. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
