Description: The initial determination of left–right asymmetry is an essential process in embryonic development. In mouse embryo, cilia in the node play an important role generating the nodal flow that subsequently triggers left–right determination in the embryo. Although nodal cilia have historically been thought to have a 9 + 0 axonemal configuration, the existence of 9 + 2 cilia has been reported so far. Because the distribution of those two types of cilia within the node has not yet been reported, we assessed the arrangement of 9 + 0 and 9 + 2 cilia in the node. In this study, we concluded that most of the nodal cilia were 9 + 0 in structure and there were much fewer 9 + 2 cilia than 9 + 0 cilia. Furthermore, the two types of cilia were randomly distributed in the node with no regularity. In addition, we studied the embryonic origin of the crown cells surrounding the node to better understand their identity.

Description: A sporadic sodium layer (SSL) was detected with five-directional lidar observation on 15 December 2012 at Tromsø, Norway. We have derived the horizontal velocity of the SSL front from the SSL onset times at the five positions, and compared it with the background wind velocity from the collocated meteor radar and European incoherent scatter (EISCAT) radar. As the result, both velocities were fairly consistent. The increase rate in the height-integrated sodium density around the SSL onset was 3–6×10 10 m −2 s −1 , which was comparable to relatively large cases in the previous studies. However, the EISCAT-observed electric field was too small to induce such a rapid sodium atom production. In addition, the amounts of the sodium atom increases at the five positions were mostly same. Thus, there were no clear signatures for the sodium atom production. These results strongly indicate that the observed SSL was just advected by the background wind.

Description: Author(s): S. Dushenko, H. Ago, K. Kawahara, T. Tsuda, S. Kuwabata, T. Takenobu, T. Shinjo, Y. Ando, and M. Shiraishi The small spin-orbit interaction of carbon atoms in graphene promises a long spin diffusion length and the potential to create a spin field-effect transistor. However, for this reason, graphene was largely overlooked as a possible spin-charge conversion material. We report electric gate tuning of th… [Phys. Rev. Description: Introduction Recent research suggests that vitamin D deficiency may cause both bone diseases and a range of non-skeletal diseases. However, most of these data come from observational studies, and clinical trial data on the effects of vitamin D supplementation on individuals with pre-diabetes are scarce and inconsistent. The aim of the Diabetes Prevention with active Vitamin D (DPVD) study is to assess the effect of eldecalcitol, active vitamin D analogue, on the incidence of type 2 diabetes among individuals with pre-diabetes. Methods and analysis DPVD is an ongoing, prospective, multicentre, randomised, double-blind and placebo-controlled outcome study in individuals with impaired glucose tolerance. Participants, men and women aged ≥30 years, will be randomised to receive eldecalcitol or placebo. They will also be given a brief (5–10 min long) talk about appropriate calorie intake from diet and exercise at each 12-week visit. The primary end point is the cumulative incidence of type 2 diabetes. Secondary endpoint is the number of participants who achieve normoglycaemia at 48, 96 and 144 weeks. Follow-up is estimated to span 144 weeks. Ethics and dissemination All protocols and an informed consent form comply with the Ethics Guideline for Clinical Research (Japan Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare). The study protocol has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at Kokura Medical Association and University of Occupational and Environmental Health. The study will be implemented in line with the CONSORT statement. Trial registration number UMIN000010758; Pre-results.
