Abstract: Drug addiction is characterized by compulsive drug use and relapse. Thioredoxin-1 is emerging as an important modulator involved in the cellular protective response against a variety of toxic stressors. Previous study has reported that thioredoxin-1 overexpression prevents the acquisition of methamphetamine-conditioned place preference. Here, we aimed to investigate the effect of thioredoxin-1 on methamphetamine-conditioned place preference extinction and the possible mechanism. Methods: (a) An extinction procedure in mice was employed to investigate the effect of thioredoxin-1 on the extinction of methamphetamine-conditioned place preference. After the acquisition of methamphetamine-conditioned place preference, mice underwent the following procedures: the injection of thioredoxin-1 small interfering RNA in the ventral tegmental area followed by the post-conditioned place preference test, four days of extinction training followed by four days of recovery after surgery. (b) The levels of thioredoxin-1, dopamine D1 receptor, tyrosine hydroxylase, phosphorylated extracellular regulated kinase, and phosphorylated cyclic adenosine monophosphate response element binding protein were examined by using Western blot analysis. Results: Thioredoxin-1 downregulation in the ventral tegmental area delayed methamphetamine-conditioned place preference extinction. The expression of thioredoxin-1 was decreased in the ventral tegmental area of mice in control and negative groups after methamphetamine-conditioned place preference extinction, but not in the thioredoxin-1 siRNA group. The levels of dopamine D1 receptor, tyrosine hydroxylase, phosphorylated extracellular regulated kinase, and phosphorylated cyclic adenosine monophosphate response element binding protein were decreased in the ventral tegmental area, nucleus accumbens, and prefrontal cortex of mice in the control and negative groups after methamphetamine-conditioned place preference extinction, but were inversely increased in thioredoxin-1 siRNA group. Conclusions: The results suggest that downregulation of thioredoxin-1 in the ventral tegmental area may delay methamphetamine-conditioned place preference extinction by regulating the mesocorticolimbic dopaminergic signaling pathway.

Abstract: A concrete plastic-damage model, the extended Drucker–Prager model for rockfill, and acoustic elements for water were introduced and applied to the impact fracture analysis of a concrete-faced rockfill dam–water three-dimensional system. The plastic-damage dynamic analysis process was used in combination with the concrete compressive and tensile damage model. The 223-m high Shuibuya concrete-faced rockfill dam was analyzed using an explicit integration. Numerical simulations of the damage threshold, rockfill modeling, and interface processing were conducted to research the effect of the anti-explosion performance that occurs when a concrete slab is subjected to an underwater shock wave. The simulation results indicate that the main regions of weakness in the slabs during an underwater shock wave are determined by the tensile damage. The slab’s anti-knock weak areas appear in the right dam abutment and the top of the left dam. The anti-knock performance in the upper slab is inferior to that of the lower slab. Specific local optimization steps should be applied at these locations to improve the slabs’ anti-knock capabilities, which are important for designing concrete-faced rockfill dams.

Abstract: Purpose: To compare the treatment outcomes in patients with acute proximal deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and iliofemoral stenosis who underwent either direct stenting after AngioJet rheolytic thrombectomy or staged stenting after AngioJet thrombectomy plus catheter-directed thrombolysis with urokinase. Methods: From June 2014 to February 2016, 91 DVT patients underwent 2 treatments for duplex-verified iliofemoral stenosis: direct stenting (n = 46; mean age 54.8 years; 32 men) or staged stenting (n = 45; mean age 56.5 years; 27 men). The degree of patency after thrombectomy or thrombolysis was evaluated using the Venous Registry Index (VRI), while the risk of postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) was evaluated according to the Villalta scale. Patients were followed with periodic duplex ultrasound scans up to 1 year. Results: The technical success rates were 100% in both groups; there was no 30-day mortality. Immediate (24-hour) clinical improvement was achieved in 42 (91%) of 46 direct group patients vs 33 (73%) of 45 staged group patients (p 〈 0.001). A significant reduction (p 〈 0.001) in the length of hospital stay was noted in the direct group (4.59±0.91) compared with that in the staged group (5.8±1.6). The stents used in the direct group were longer but with similar diameter compared with the staged group. The thrombolysis rates were 81.50%±5.76% in the direct group and 85.67%±3.84% in the staged group (p 〈 0.001). The VRIs declined (improved) significantly in both groups (11.68±1.92 to 3.21±1.44 in the direct group and 12.17±2.29 to 2.36±1.19 in the staged group, both p 〈 0.001). The Villalta scores were significantly better in the staged group (p 〈 0.001). Recurrent DVT occurred in 2 patients in the direct group. The primary patency rates at 1 year were 93.5% in the direct group and 97.8% in the staged group (p=0.323). Conclusion: Both direct and staged stenting are effective treatment modalities for patients with acute proximal DVT. Compared with staged stenting, direct stenting provides similar treatment success and a significant reduction in the length of hospital stay; however, it has lower thrombolysis efficacy, and the risk of PTS at 1 year is greater with direct stenting.

Abstract: To compare clinicopathological characteristics and survival rates between patients with primary ovarian mucinous carcinoma and those with primary ovarian serous carcinoma. Methods This retrospective study reviewed archival tumour specimens, originally diagnosed as primary ovarian mucinous carcinoma, using refined histological criteria. All patients were contacted to establish survival status. Clinicopathological characteristics and patient survival data were compared with a group of control patients with primary ovarian serous carcinoma. Results Of the 33 patients originally diagnosed with primary ovarian mucinous carcinoma, this diagnosis was only confirmed in 18. Primary ovarian mucinous carcinoma was more commonly associated with early International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics tumour stages and low-grade histology than primary ovarian serous carcinoma. Patients with primary ovarian mucinous carcinoma had a significantly higher overall 5-year survival rate than those with primary ovarian serous carcinoma (12/12 [100%] versus 14/24 [58%] ). Kaplan–Meier survival plots demonstrated that patients with primary ovarian mucinous carcinoma had a survival advantage over patients with primary ovarian serous carcinoma. Conclusions Primary ovarian mucinous carcinomas are frequently low-grade, stage I tumours and have an excellent prognosis.

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to report the clinical outcomes of endovascular treatment for extensive lower limb deep vein thrombosis with AngioJet rheolytic thrombectomy (ART) plus catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) using a contralateral femoral approach. Methods A retrospective analysis of consecutive ART+CDT treatments in 38 deep vein thrombosis patients (LET I-III, from September 2014 to March 2016) was performed. Results The technical success rate was 100%. Complete lysis was achieved in 82% of LET III segments (calf veins), 87% of LET II segments (popliteal-femoral veins), and 90% of LET III segments (iliac veins). The best results were obtained in patients treated within seven days of symptom onset. During follow-up, well-preserved, competent femoral valves were observed in 86% of the patients, and recanalization of LET III, LET II, and LET I segments was achieved in 100%, 94%, and 91% of the patients, respectively. The post-thrombotic syndrome rate was 17% during a mean 20-month follow-up.

Abstract: How is journalism practiced in the social media era? What are the values and significance of journalistic professionalism in the changed situation? This article addresses these issues through a case study. It takes The Paper, an online news outlet in Shanghai, as a case and analyzes its coverage of the capsizing accident of the cruise, The Oriental Star, on Yangtze River in June 2015. This case shows that news production in the social media era is taking the form of dynamic interactions that involve both professional journalists and the public; media organizations are no longer the primary authoritative interpreter of news events; the values and significance of news are constantly reconstructed with public’s participation; the accelerated pace of news production and circulation subverts the institutionalized news production procedures and routines; and there is an intense tension between journalists who value professional control and the general public who cherish instant participation. Drawing inspiration from Bauman’s work, the authors strive to not only characterize the changes in journalism as “liquid journalism” but also explore the contemporary significance of the ideas and discursive practices of journalistic professionalism.

Abstract: The 10 g Semmes–Weinstein monofilament evaluation (SWME) of 4 sites on each foot is recommended for distal symmetric polyneuropathy screening and diagnosis. A similar method has been proposed to diagnose ‘high-risk’ (for ulceration) feet, using 3 sites per foot. This study compared the effectiveness of SWME for testing 3, 4 and 10 sites per foot to identify patients with diabetic neuropathy. Methods We included 3497 subjects in a SWME of 10 sites; records from the 10-site SWME were used for a SWME of 3 and 4 sites. Neuropathy symptom scores and neuropathy deficit scores were evaluated to identify patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Results The sensitivities of the 10 g SWME for 3, 4 and 10 sites were 17.8%, 19.0% and 22.4%, respectively. The Kappa coefficients for the SWME tests of 3, 4 and 10 sites were high (range: 0.78–0.93). Conclusions There were no significant differences in the effectiveness of 3-, 4- and 10-site SWME testing for diabetic peripheral neuropathy screening. SWME testing of 3 sites on each foot may be sufficient to screen for diabetic neuropathy.

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate a novel knotless technique for novice laparoscopists in traditional laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. Methods We studied 68 patients who had a novel technique performed in laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (knotless group) and 89 who had the conventional single knot technique (single knot group). The operations were all performed by novice laparoscopists with experience of fewer than 100 cases of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. Knotless suture of the dorsal vein complex was conducted using a barbed self-retaining suture with three bites at the same location. The knotless urethrovesical anastomosis technique was conducted using a unidirectional single running fashion with a barbed self-retaining suture. Results There were no significant differences in the estimated blood loss, complication rate, postoperative hospital stay, anastomotic leakage rate, continence at 6 months after surgery, and positive margin rate between the two groups. The mean anastomotic time (24.9 vs. 44.2 min), operative time (168.1 vs. 201.8 min), and duration of catheter placement (12.8 vs. 19.8 days) were shorter in the knotless group than in the single-knot group. Conclusions The knotless technique of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is a safe and effective procedure.

Abstract: This study was performed to assess the influence of obesity on colorectal cancer (CRC) and investigate the efficacy of Xiaotan Tongfu (XTTF) decoction to CRC treatment. Methods BALB/C mice were used to establish an obesity-associated CRC model by a high-fat diet and tumor implantation. The tumors were harvested from mice inoculated with CT26 cell suspension. Body weight, liver weight, hepatic metastasis, and histological changes were observed. Immunohistochemical analysis and real-time polymerase chain reaction were performed to measure the levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R), and IGF binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3). Results Obesity influenced the secretion of IGFs and aggravated CRC, while XTTF decoction inhibited the process of hepatic metastasis in CRC by upregulating the secretion of IGF-1/IGF-1R and downregulating the secretion of IGFBP-3. Conclusions This study provides evidence that XTTF decoction can serve as a candidate curative treatment for CRC.

Abstract: In teleoperation, the operator is often required to command the motion of the remote robot and monitor its behavior. However, such an interaction demands a heavy workload from a human operator when facing with complex tasks and dynamic environments. In this article, we propose a shared control method to assist the operator in the manipulation tasks to reduce the workload and improve the efficiency. We adopt a task-parameterized hidden semi-Markov model to learn a manipulation skill from several human demonstrations. We utilize the learned model to predict the manipulation target given the current observed robotic motion trajectory and subsequently estimate the desired robotic motion given the current input of the operator. The estimated robotic motion is then utilized to correct the input of the operator to provide manipulation assistance. In addition, a set of virtual reality devices are used to capture the operator’s motion and display the vision feedback from the remote site. We evaluate our approach through two manipulation tasks with a dual-arm robot. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
