Abstract: A rapid infusion pump with a maximum flow rate of 6 L/h was designed experimentally using a micro electromagnetic linear actuator, and its effectiveness was evaluated by comparing with that of a commercial Power Infuser under preset flow rates of 0.2, 2, and 6 L/h. The flow rate, air detection sensitivity, occlusion response time, quantitative determination of hemolysis, and power consumption of the infusion devices were extensively investigated using statistical analysis methods ( p  〈  0.05). The experimental results revealed that the flow rate of the designed infusion pump was more stable and accurate, and the hemolysis was significantly less than that of the Power Infuser. The air detection sensitivity and the power consumption could be comparable to that of the Power Infuser except the occlusion response time. The favorable performance made the designed infusion pump a potential candidate for applications in pre-hospital fluid administration.

Abstract: A new series of 4-azasteroidal-17-hydrazone derivatives have been synthesized from androstenedione. Their structures were characterized by analysis and spectroscopic data. The antiproliferative activity of synthesized compounds against three cancer cells (human lung adenocarcinoma, human oesophageal cervical cancer, human gastric adenocarcinoma) and a normal cell line (human gastric mucosal) was investigated. The studies show that the compound bearing a naphthyl group displayed the same antiproliferative activity in vitro against tested cells as cis-platin did (a positive control). Most of the compounds show very weak toxicity towards normal human gastric mucosal cell line.

Abstract: As angiogenesis and vasculogenesis involve the complex network structures of various types of cells, extracellular matrix components, and cytokines, it is still difficult to exactly mimic the microenvironment of vascularization in vivo. In our study, we constructed a complex containing highly proliferative fibroblasts that can secrete extracellular matrix components and growth factors to chemotaxize endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in an attempt to create an ideal microenvironment for quick vascularization. Amniotic membrane microparticles (mAM) rich in type IV collagen (COL IV) and laminin (LN) were prepared, and human dermal fibroblasts (HDF) were infected with lentivirus (LV) of overexpression of SDF-1α to construct SDF-1α ov HDF. Using the rotary cell culture system (RCCS), mAM was loaded with HDF or SDF-1α ov HDF to construct HDF-mAM and SDF-1α ov HDF-mAM complexes. The complexes were able to secrete various types of active peptides (IL-6, IL-8, TGF-β, and bFGF) during in vitro culture. In addition, SDF-1α ov HDF-mAM complex highly expressed SDF-1α. Transwell assay showed SDF-1α ov HDF-mAM complex had an apparent chemotactic effect on EPCs. Transplantation of complexes onto full-thickness skin defects of C57BL mice further demonstrated that SDF-1α expression and the number of peripheral EPCs at days 3, 5, and 7 in the SDF-1α ov HDF-mAM group were significantly higher than that in other groups ( p 〈 0.01). The local microvascular density at day 10 of transplantation showed that the microvascular density in the SDF-1α ov HDF-mAM group was significantly higher than that in HDF-mAM group ( p 〈 0.01). In conclusion, HDF-mAM had a strong proliferative activity and could be used to create a sound microenvironment for quick vascularization by secreting multiple cytokines and extracellular matrix components. Overexpression of SDF-1α could chemotaxize EPCs to reach local wounds, thus further accelerating angiogenesis in the transplant site. The technique described may prove to be a new model for accelerating vascularization of tissue and organ transplants and chronic ischemic wounds.

Abstract: In this study, seven microbial materials (entomogenous fungi Bb3088 mycelia, entomogenous fungi Bb3088 spores, entomogenous fungi Ma2677 mycelia, entomogenous fungi Ma2677 spores, Bacillus subtilis 8204, Staphylococcus aureus 6725, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae 1025) were used to measure electromagnetic (EM) signal extinction. They were subjected to light absorption and reflection measurements in the range of 4000–400 cm −1 (2.5–25 µm) using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The specular reflection spectrum method was used to calculate the real ( n) and imaginary ( k) parts of the complex refractive index. The complex refractive index with real part n and imaginary part k in the infrared band satisfies the following conditions n ≥ 1 and k ≥ 0. The mass extinction coefficient was calculated based on Mie theory. Entomogenous fungi Ma2677 spores and entomogenous fungi Bb3088 spores were selected as EM signal extinction materials in the smoke box test. The transmittances of entomogenous fungi Bb3088 spores and entomogenous fungi Ma2677 spores were 11.63% and 5.42%, and the mass extinction coefficients were 1.8337 m 2 /g and 1.227 m 2 /g. These results showed that entomogenous fungi Bb3088 spores and entomogenous fungi Ma2677 spores have higher extinction characteristics than other microbial materials.

Abstract: The wind past the ship superstructure produces an unsteady turbulent airwake which has a significant effect on aircraft performance and consequently pilot workload during ship landing process. Computational fluid dynamics simulations of a generic simple frigate shape ship airwake have been performed using the entropy-based detached-eddy simulation method. The results were compared with the steady-state Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes calculations and the wind tunnel data, indicating the capability of entropy-based detached-eddy simulation to resolve the unsteady large-scale turbulent features. An analysis of the airwake flow topology at headwind condition highlights the vortex pairing process which dominates the flowfield above the deck. Additionally, the influence of hangar-door state (open, closed or half-open) on the airwake was also investigated in detail. Determination of this complex flow can assist in the definition of safe ship–helicopter operating limits and future ship design.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of HIV infection among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Hefei, China. A total of 578 MSM were recruited, with a mean age of 28.13 ± 6.91; 70.7% were under 30. The awareness rate was 95.4% (560/587) in the cross-sectional study. Of all the respondents, 73 (12.44%) were seropositive for HIV and 56 (9.54%) for syphilis. Multivariate analysis showed that self-reported sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (AOR = 8.02, 95% CI: 2.58–24.98, P  〈  0.001), received HIV testing in the past year (AOR = 0.33, 95% CI: 0.19–0.60, P  〈  0.001) and syphilis (AOR = 3.40, 95% CI: 1.69– 6.85, P = 0.001) were independently associated with HIV infection. It is necessary for post-test counselling to address risk among those who engage in sexual risk behaviours. More efforts are needed to enhance HIV/STI testing and treatment services in China.

Abstract: In this paper, a facile large-scale preparation of surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) substrates for the determination of Rhodamine B (RhB) based on silver nanowires (Ag NWs) has been developed. The morphology, structure, and properties of as-prepared Ag NWs are characterized using ultraviolet–visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. Ag NWs were assembled onto glass slides through a self-assembly method. Moreover, in our experiment, as-prepared Ag NWs@glass were used as a SERRS substrate to detect RhB at the excitation wavelength of 532 nm. Experimental conditions such as pH value and soaking time on SERRS performance were studied and optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the SERRS intensity at 1648 cm −1 exhibited a linear relationship with the concentration of RhB in the range of 1.0 × 10 −9 –1.0 × 10 −5  mol L −1 and detection limit (signal-to-noise ratio [S/N] = 3) is as low as 0.3 nmol L −1 . The corresponding correlation coefficient of the linear equation was 0.996. This method based on Ag NWs@glass for the detection of RhB in three kinds of condiment was investigated. The limits of detection (LODs) for RhB were 0.35 µg/g in chili powder, 0.14 µg/g in chili sauce, and 0.02 µg/g in Chinese prickly ash. The relative standard deviations (RSD) were between 2.18% and 4.56% (n = 3) and recoveries at three levels were in the range of 80.0–98.7% for different spiked food products. Moreover, the results showed that the proposed method was sensitive, convenient, and feasible for the determination of RhB in condiments.

Abstract: We formulated the composition and temperature dependence of the Si and Si 1– x Ge x Raman shift from the perspectives of bond order–length–strength correlation and local bond average approach. It is verified that the Raman shift Δω varies in the form of Δω ∝ zE 1/2 / d, with inclusion of bond length d and energy E changing with temperature and composition. Numerical reproduction of the thermally induced Si 1– x Ge x phonon softening indicates that bond thermal expansion and energy loss dictate the frequency redshift, which resulted in quantitative information on the bond energy and the reference frequencies from which the Raman shifts proceed. Observations not only gain deeper insight into the mechanism of the Raman shift but also demonstrate the revealing power of Raman technique for the bonding thermodynamics.

Abstract: Which bystanders will confront racist, misogynist, personal attacks in news comment sections? This article applies sociological concepts of deviance and social control to categorize efforts to moderate online news comments. Three dimensions of social control are theorized: affirming and sanctioning social control, formal and informal social control, and direct and indirect social control. Particular focus is on indirect informal social control (i.e. rating and reporting of news comments) in order to examine which users are likely to intervene to maintain social order. An analysis of secondary data from a survey of online news users found that demographics play an important role—younger, wealthier, White, males are most likely to report abusive comments. Trust in the news media and authoritarian personality traits also significantly predicted bystander intervention. Theoretical implications for the role of social control in enforcing social norms in news comment spaces and for professional comment moderation are discussed.
