    Abstract: Background: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs) are classes of contaminants that are present in the environment and food. They pose a great threat to human health because of their carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. Very few studies have focused on their concentration in waste cooking oil (WCO) and oil deodorizer distillate (ODD). Objective: This study aimed (1) to design a reliable method to determine 16 PAHs and 4 OPAHs in both WCO and ODD and (2) to determine and analyze PAH and OPAH concentrations in actual samples to provide references for further research. Method: The PAH determination approach included double liquid–liquid extraction, double solid-phase extraction, and GC–triple quadrupole tandem MS determination. Oxidation indices were determined by titrimetry. Results: The method reached good linearity (R2 & gt; 0.99) and an acceptable recovery rate (55.01–126.16% for WCO and 57.48–128.97% for ODD). Ten WCO and five ODD samples were determined, and the total concentration of 16 PAHs varied from 16.34 to 239.01 and 101.08 to 198.04 μg/kg in WCO and ODD, respectively. Among the 16 PAHs, three-ring PAHs typically contributed the most. It was also found that the acid value has a strong correlation with the concentration of OPAHs, probably because of the contribution of free fatty acids to OPAH formation. Conclusions: The proposed method was effective in the analysis of PAHs and OPAHs in WCO and ODD.

    Abstract: Background: Cabernet Sauvignon wine enjoys large market in China, and its adulteration has become a well-known problem and challenge. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the capabilities of multiple techniques, including headspace–solid-phase microextraction–GC-MS (HS-SPME-GC-MS), electronic tongue (E-tongue) spectroscopy, mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy, and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, to differentiate this popular imported wine in China. Methods: MIR spectroscopy, NIR spectroscopy, E-tongue spectroscopy, and HS-SPME-GC-MS were used. Multivariate analysis techniques were applied to further explore the instrumental determination data for the wine discrimination. Results: Joint use of MIR and NIR with Grey relational analysis (GRA), E-tongue with principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis, and HS-SPME-GC-MS with PCA allowed unanimous differentiation of the wines. Conclusions: The approach described herein offers both ecologically friendly and multiperspective mutual corroboration techniques for Cabernet Sauvignon wine discrimination. The integrative methodology could be used as a reference for wine authentication. Highlights: GRA was first applied to discriminate the wine samples. Mutual corroboration was verified by multivariate statistics combined with MIR, NIR, E-tongue, and SPME-GC/MS. Integrated techniques pointed to a unanimous authentication of the wine samples.

    Abstract: Decreased levels of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii (F. prausnitzii), whose supernatant plays an anti-inflammatory effect, are frequently found in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. However, the anti-inflammatory products in F. prausnitzii supernatant and the mechanism have not been fully investigated. Here we found that F. prausnitzii and F. prausnitzii-derived butyrate were decreased in the intestines of IBD patients. Supplementation with F. prausnitzii supernatant and butyrate could ameliorate colitis in an animal model. Butyrate, but not other substances produced by F. prausnitzii, exerted an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting the differentiation of T helper 17 (Th17) cells. The mechanism underlying the anti-inflammatory effects of the butyrate produced by F. prausnitzii involved the enhancement of the acetylation-promoted degradation of c-Myc through histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) inhibition. In conclusion, F. prausnitzii produced butyrate to decrease Th17 differentiation and attenuate colitis through inhibiting HDAC3 and c-Myc-related metabolism in T cells. The use of F. prausnitzii may be an effective new approach to decrease the level of Th17 cells in the treatment of inflammatory diseases.
