Abstract: This study is to identify the circular RNA (circRNA) expression profile that is functionally related to pancreatic islet β -cell autophagy and their potential regulation mechanisms in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). T2DM rat model was constructed by administration of high-fat and high-sugar diet. β -cells were isolated from islets by flow cytometry. CircRNA expression profile in β -cells was detected by circRNA microarrays, and the differentially expressed circRNAs were identified and validated by qRT-PCR. MicroRNA (miRNA) target prediction software and multiple bioinformatic approaches were used to construct a map of circRNA-miRNA interactions for the differentially expressed circRNAs. A total of 825 differentially expressed circular transcripts were identified in T2DM rats compared with control rats, among which 388 were upregulated and 437 were downregulated. Ten circRNAs were identified to have significant differences by qRT-PCR. GO analysis enriched terms such as organelle membrane and protein binding and the top enriched pathways for the circRNAs included MAPK signaling pathway. The differentially expressed circRNAs might involve in MAPK signaling pathway, apoptosis, and Ras signaling pathway. We speculate that these circRNAs, especially rno_circRNA_008565, can regulate the autophagy of islet β -cells via interactions with miRNA. Dysregulation of several circRNAs may play a role in T2DM development, and rno_circRNA_008565 may be a potential regulator of β -cell autophagy.

Abstract: With great mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, amorphous alloy fiber (AAF) is a highly anticipated material in the fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) field. In this study, the mechanical properties of AAFRC such as compressive strength, tensile strength, and flexural strength were examined. The comparison and analysis between AAFRC and steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) were also carried out. The results show that adding fibers significantly improves the concrete strength and toughness index. Compared with plain concrete, the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength of AAFRC increase by 8.21–16.72%, 10.4–32.8%, and 18.12–45.21%, respectively. Meanwhile, the addition of AAF with a greater tensile strength and larger unit volume quantity improves the splitting tensile strength and flexural strength of concrete more noticeably than that of SF. Adding AAF improves the ductility of concrete more significantly in comparison to the SF. AAFRC shows great interfacial bonding performance as well. A prediction equation for the strength of AAFRC was proposed, which verified good accuracy calibrated based on the test results.

Abstract: Aneurysms-osteoarthritis syndrome (AOS) is a recently delineated autosomal dominant disorder characterized by aneurysms, dissections, and tortuosity throughout the arterial tree in association with early onset osteoarthritis, mild craniofacial features, and skeletal and cutaneous anomalies. Previous studies have demonstrated that mutations in SMAD3 , a key regulator of TGF- β signal transduction, contribute to AOS. Here, we investigated a family of three generations affected by AOS. A novel SMAD3 mutation, c.266G 〉 A (p.C89Y), was identified and cosegregated with the affected individuals in this family. Our finding expands the mutation spectrum of SMAD3 gene and further strengthens the connection between the presence of aneurysms-osteoarthritis phenotype and SMAD3 mutations, which facilitates the understanding of the genotype-phenotype correlation of AOS.

Abstract: The burial dissolution of carbonate rocks has long been an interesting topic of reservoir geologists. Integrated with geological studies and reactive transport modeling, this study investigated the Cambrian dolomites that were buried at depths up to 8408 m and still preserved a large amount of unfilled dissolution vugs from the borehole TS1 in the northern Tarim Basin. Studies indicate that these vugs were formed in association with fault-channeled hydrothermal fluids from greater depth through “retrograde dissolution” as the fluid temperature dropped during upward migration. The reactive transport modeling results suggest an important control of the vertical permeability of wall-rock on fluid and temperature patterns which, in turn, would control the spatial distribution of dissolving-originated porosity. The hydrothermal dissolution mainly occurred in dolomite wall-rocks with higher vertical permeability (extensive development of tensional fractures and connected pore spaces), producing additional dissolved porosity there during deep burial. This study implicates the importance of multidisciplinary approaches for understanding the burial/hydrothermal dissolution of dolomite rocks and predicting favourable deep/ultradeep carbonate reservoirs.

Abstract: The quality of strawberry powder depends on the freshness of the fruit that produces the powder. Therefore, identifying whether the strawberry powder is made from freshly available, short-term stored, or long-term stored strawberries is important to provide consumers with quality-assured strawberry powder. Nevertheless, such identification is difficult by naked eyes, as the powder colours are very close. In this work, based on the measurement of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and mid-infrared (MIR) spectra of strawberry powered, good classification results of 100.00% correct rates to distinguish whether the strawberry powder was made from freshly available or stored fruit was obtained. Furthermore, partial least squares regression and least squares support vector machines (LS-SVM) models were established based on NIR, MIR, and combination of NIR and MIR data with full variables or optimal variables of strawberry powder to predict the storage days of strawberries that produced the powder. Optimal variables were selected by successive projections algorithm (SPA), uninformation variable elimination, and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling, respectively. The best model was determined as the SPA-LS-SVM model based on MIR spectra, which had the residual prediction deviation (RPD) value of 11.198 and the absolute difference between root-mean-square error of calibration and prediction (AB_RMSE) value of 0.505. The results of this work confirmed the feasibility of using NIR and MIR spectroscopic techniques for rapid identification of strawberry powder made from freshly available and stored strawberry.
