Abstract: We succeeded in increasing the radial observation points of the microwave frequency comb Doppler reflectometer system from 8 to 20 (or especially up to 45) using the high sampling rate of 40 GS/s digital signal processing. For a new acquisition system, the estimation scheme of the Doppler shifted frequency is constructed and compared with the conventional technique. Also, the fine radial profile of perpendicular velocity is obtained, and it is found that the perpendicular velocity profile is consistent with the E × B drift velocity one.

Abstract: Continuous cell monitoring is very important for the maintenance and control of cell multiplication and differentiation. This paper presents a compact microplate reader that is able to continuously measure a 24-well microplate (6 × 4 wells) using the optical absorption measurement method. The 24-channel plate reader consisted of a spatial filter, light emitting diode light source, and color sensors and was similarly sized with the cell culture microwell plates. A spatial filter was previously fabricated by our group using silicone optical technology (SOT). This SOT-based spatial filter has an excellent noise reduction effect. Light reflection at the optical path interface can be absorbed and only forward light can be transmitted; accordingly, a larger S/N ratio than that of conventional optical systems is expected. The fabricated 24-channel plate reader permits real-time cell monitoring during cultivation on the clean bench and in cell culture conditions by incorporating the SOT spatial filter. Using the device, it was possible to continuously evaluate the concentration and pH of reagents in the 24 wells in real time. Moreover, cell activity and protein production were detectable using the device. These results suggest that the newly fabricated device is a promising tool for the evaluation of cell behaviors for cell management.

Abstract: We evaluated electrical passivation of crystalline silicon wafers possessing oxidized layers using a laser terahertz (THz) emission microscope, measuring waveforms of laser-excited THz emission from those surfaces with a corona charging setup to tune surface potential without electrical contact. The THz waveform strongly correlated to the surface potential, evaluated by measuring surface photovoltage using a Kelvin probe when the surface was depleted or inverted. The waveform also correlated to the potential of the surface in the accumulation mode and inverted near the flatband condition. The minority carrier lifetime agreed with the theoretically determined dependence on the charge density. These results indicate that the surface potential of a semiconductor covered by an insulator which can be charged by the corona charging setup can be evaluated by assessing the THz emission. Further, such a sample can also be used as a reference to quantitatively relate the waveform of the THz emission and the internal field of surface band bending in semiconductors.

Abstract: A plasmonic array, consisting of metallic nanocylinders periodically arranged with a pitch comparable to the optical wavelength, is a system in which both the localized surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and diffraction in the plane of the array are simultaneously excitable. When combined with a phosphor film, the array acts as a photoluminescence (PL) director and enhancer. Since the array can modify both excitation and emission processes, the overall modification mechanism is generally complex and difficult to understand. Here, we examined the mechanism by simplifying the discussion using an emitter with a high quantum yield, large Stokes shift, and long PL lifetime. Directional PL enhancement as large as five-fold occurred, which is mainly caused by outcoupling, i.e., the PL trapped in the emitter film by total internal reflection is extracted into free space through the SPPs and diffraction. The present scheme is robust and applicable to arbitrary emitters, and it is useful for designing compact and efficient directional illumination devices.

Abstract: In general, the sedimentation velocities of microparticles in liquids are not uniform due to long-ranged hydrodynamic interactions. Although the velocity fluctuations have been extensively studied experimentally, numerically, and theoretically, the effect of charges of microparticles on the velocity fluctuations is not yet reported. This is probably due to some difficulties in the detection of optical signals from the micron-sized particles dispersed in water where the refractive index is more or less different, leading to serious scattering and attenuation of visible light. So far, since the dynamic ultrasound scattering technique was a good candidate to observe micron- and nano-sized particles in optically opaque systems, we investigated the velocity fluctuations ΔV of microparticles in water. In this study, we show that the velocity fluctuations of charged silica particles exhibit anomalous rise in the concentration dependence of ΔV and show that such a behavior can be suppressed by adding a small amount of salt.

Abstract: The formation of magnetic and spintronic devices using two-dimensional (2D) atom-thin layers has attracted attention. Ferromagnetisms (FMs) arising from zigzag-type atomic structure of edges of 2D atom-thin materials have been experimentally observed in graphene nanoribbons, hydrogen (H)-terminated graphene nanomeshes (NMs), and few-layer oxygen (O)-terminated black phosphorus NMs. Herein, we report room-temperature edge FM in few-layer hexagonal boron-nitride (hBN) NMs. O-terminated hBNNMs annealed at 500 °C show the largest FM, while it completely disappears in H-terminated hBNNMs. When hBNNMs are annealed at other temperatures, amplitude of the FM significantly decreases. These are highly in contrast to the case of graphene NMs but similar to the cases of black phosphorus NM and suggest that the hybridization of the O atoms with B(N) dangling bonds of zigzag pore edges, formed at the 500 °C annealing, strongly contribute to this edge FM. Room-temperature FM realizable only by exposing hBNNMs into air opens the way for high-efficiency 2D flexible magnetic and spintronic devices without the use of rare magnetic elements.

Abstract: We have investigated direct and inverse Edelstein effects in a one-atom-layer Tl-Pb compound with a large Rashba-type spin splitting. In spin pumping experiments at room temperature, spin-to-charge conversion voltage due to the inverse Edelstein effect is clearly observed in Py/Cu/Tl-Pb trilayer samples. To confirm efficient spin-charge interconversion in Tl-Pb compounds, the direct Edelstein effect is also studied in the same trilayer samples by measuring the modulation of the effective magnetization damping in the Py layer via the charge-to-spin conversion in the Tl-Pb layer. Using the results of both direct and inverse Edelstein effects, the Edelstein length is estimated to be ∼0.1 nm for Tl-Pb compounds.
