    Notes: The distance between the tip of a tracheal tube and the carina was measured in twenty five patients who required tracheal intubation and artificial ventilation of the lungs. Two methods of evaluation of this distance—limited fibre-optic bronchoscopy and chest X-ray—were compared. There was no significant difference between the distance measured by either method. The advantages of checking tracheal tube placement by fibre-optic bronchoscopy are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Photoelectric Vilnius photometry of the B-type stars HD 29 647 and HDE 283 809 in the direction of the Taurus molecular cloud indicates their brightness and energy distribution to be constant within 1–2%. The interstellar extinction law is determined for the star HDE 283 809 from the photometry data in the Vilnius andUBVRJHKL systems, which yield the ratioR=A V/EB-V=3.5 and grain sizes exceeding the average by approximately 10%. The interstellar extinction law for the two stars is found to be the same in the infrared, however, it is very different in the near ultraviolet. The new spectra of HDE 283 809 confirm the earlier classification and indicate an absence of emission in the hydrogen lines. The interstellar band at 443 nm is observed but its intensity is a half of what is expected forE B-V=1.61. The observed peculiarities of the energy distribution in the spectrum of HDE 283 809 apparently originate in interstellar or circumstellar dust, not in the star itself.

    Notes: The purpose of this study was to determine histologically the distribution of microspheres (MSs) (14 μm), and hence the relative distribution of blood flow, in rat plantaris muscle relative to the fiber types (fast-twitch-oxidative-glycolytic [FOG], fast-twitch-glycolytic [FG], and slow-twitch-oxidative [SO]). Three conditions were investigated: (1) preexercise standing; (2) treadmill locomotion at 15 m/min (fast walking); and (3) treadmill locomotion at 60 m/min (moderate galloping). The MS suspension (containing 1 × 106 MSs) was infused into the ascending aorta via a catheter in the carotid artery under each of the 3 conditions so that MSs were distributed to the tissues in proportion to their respective blood flows. Sections (20 m̈m) of the plantaris muscle were cut and assayed for reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide tetrazolium reductase (NADH-TR) and myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activities so the fibers could be typed as SO, FOG, or FG. MSs were located in the NADH-TR sections, and the fibers next to the MSs were classified and counted. The observed numbers of fibers of each type in each condition that were adjacent to MSs were compared to the predicted number of adjacent fibers based on the assumption the MSs were randomly distributed in the tissue. This analysis demonstrated that MSs (and blood flows) were preferentially distributed to SO fibers during preexercise, to SO and FOG fibers during slow locomotion, and to FOG fibers during fast locomotion. The data support the contention that blood flow is distributed in muscles of conscious animals as functions of fiber type and exercise intensity.

    Description: MOON (Mediterranean Operational Oceanography Network http://www.moon-oceanforecasting.eu) provides near-real-time information on oil-spill detection (ocean color and SAR) and predictions [ocean forecasts (MFS and CYCOFOS) and oil-spill predictions (MEDSLIK)]. We employ this system to study the Lebanese oil-pollution crisis in summer 2006 and thus to assist regional and local decision makers in Europe, regionally and locally. The MEDSLIK oil-spill predictions obtained using CYCOFOS high-resolution ocean fields are compared with those obtained using lower-resolution MFS hydrodynamics, and both are validated against satellite observations. The predicted beached oil distributions along the Lebanese and Syrian coasts are compared with in situ observations. The oil-spill predictions are able to simulate the northward movement of the oil spill, with the CYCOFOS predictions being in better agreement with satellite observations. Among the free MEDSLIK parameters tested in the sensitivity experiments, the drift factor appears to be the most relevant to improve the quality of the results.

    Description: The Mediterranean Operational Oceanography Network (MOON ) provides near-real-time information on oil spill detection and predictions that have been used during the Lebanese oil pollution crisis in summer 2006. A MOON decision support system for oil spill monitoring and prediction comprising ocean colour satellite and SAR images, ocean current forecast (MFS-Mediterranean Forecasting System and CYCOFOS-CYprus Coastal Ocean Forecasting & Observing System) and the MEDSLIK oil spill model has been developed. The oil spill predictions obtained with MEDSLIK coupled to the CYCOFOS high-resolution ocean fields are compared with the oil spill predictions obtained using the lower resolution MFS hydrodynamics and both are validated against satellite observations. The predicted beached oil quatity along the Lebanese and Syrian coasts are compared with the in-situ observations. It is found that predictions with both CYCOFOS and MFS ar capable to simulate the northward movement of the oil, with the higher resolution CYCOFOS predictions in better agreement with satellite observations. Among the free MEDSLIK oil spill parameters tested in the sensitivity experiments there are the wind corrections (wind factor and angle) and the depth of coupling between eulerian fields and wind correction. Among them the drift factor appeared the most relevant in order to improve the quality of results suggesting that operational models such as MFS and CYCOFOS still lack of enought resolution and physical process at the air-sea interface. The oil moved from Lat 33°40'N Lon 35°24.75'E northward toward Syria, which was reached in 10 days at Lat 34° 38.451'N Lon 35° 58.377'E; the oil movement is followed up to August 6 when the oil reached 35.5°N.

    Description: Thermokarst is the process whereby the thawing of ice-rich permafrost ground causes land subsidence, resulting in development of distinctive landforms. Accelerated thermokarst due to climate change will damage infrastructure, but also impact hydrology, ecology and biogeochemistry. Here, we present a circumpolar assessment of the distribution of thermokarst landscapes, defined as landscapes comprised of current thermokarst landforms and areas susceptible to future thermokarst development. At 3.6 × 106 km2, thermokarst landscapes are estimated to cover ∼20% of the northern permafrost region, with approximately equal contributions from three landscape types where characteristic wetland, lake and hillslope thermokarst landforms occur. We estimate that approximately half of the below-ground organic carbon within the study region is stored in thermokarst landscapes. Our results highlight the importance of explicitly considering thermokarst when assessing impacts of climate change, including future landscape greenhouse gas emissions, and provide a means for assessing such impacts at the circumpolar scale.

    Description: The paper was produced using the INGV MFS forecasting-sys- tem product and the OC-UCY CYCOFOS forecasting-system prod- ucts. The MODIS satellite data products were processed at the GOS-CNR-ISAC Rome laboratory using the SeaDAS software devel- oped by NASA GSFC, Greenbelt, Maryland, the HDFLook software developed by The Laboratoire d’Optique Atmosphérique, Univer- sity of Lille, France, and the MS2GT tool box developed by the Uni- versity of Colorado. Procedures for oil-spill detection were developed in the ENVI environment. Processed ENVISAT-ASAR data were made available by Telespazio and JRC.
