    Abstract: Background: E-learning or electronic learning is increasingly used as a complement to traditional classes in undergraduate medical education. E-Learning become more popular, because they allow saving time of teachers and students, reduce costs of teaching and learning materials and improve classroom as well as medical colleges’ educational environment.   Objectives: This descriptive cross sectional survey was driven to explore teachers’ view about the current situation of e-learning practice in undergraduate medical education of Bangladesh. Methods: From all four phases, total 172 teachers of randomly selected eight medical colleges of Bangladesh were respondents of this study to seek information regarding the current situation of e-learning practice in undergraduate medical education, between the period of July 2018 to June 2019 with a pretested self-administered questionnaire. Results: In this study 68 (39.5%) were male and 104 (60.5%) were female teachers.  Fifty-two point three percent (52.3%) teachers agreed that they strongly awared of e-learning, 87.8% teachers had personal computers/laptops, 99.4% teachers had personal smartphones, and 98.8% teachers had personal e-mail addresses. Fifty-three percent (53%) teachers agreed that they have adequate knowledge and skill in information and communication technology (ICT). Forty-four percent (44%) teachers disagreed that they were interact with students and 49.5% teachers agreed that they interacted with peer and colleague by using social media in their medical colleges. Conclusion: Teachers are aware of e-learning and they practiced it in personal level without collaboration of the medical colleges.     Abstract: As the 2016 Global Strategy on Human Resources for Health: Workforce 2030 (GSHRH) outlines, health systems can only function with health workforce (HWF). Bangladesh is committed to achieving universal health coverage (UHC) hence a comprehensive understanding of the existing HWF was deemed necessary informing policy and funding decisions to the health system. Methods The health labour market analysis (HLMA) framework for UHC cited in the GSHRH was adopted to analyse the supply, need and demand of all health workers in Bangladesh. Government’s information systems provided data to document the public sector HWF. A national-level assessment (2019) based on a country representative sample of 133 geographical units, served to estimate the composition and distribution of the private sector HWF. Descriptive statistics served to characterize the formal and informal HWF. Results The density of doctors, nurses and midwives in Bangladesh was only 9.9 per 10 000 population, well below the indicative sustainable development goals index threshold of 44.5 outlined in the GSHRH. Considering all HWFs in Bangladesh, the estimated total density was 49 per 10 000 population. However, one-third of all HWFs did not hold recognized roles and their competencies were unknown, taking only qualified and recognized HWFs into account results in an estimated density 33.2. With an estimate 75 nurses per 100 doctors in Bangladesh, the second area, where policy attention appears to be warranted is on the competencies and skill-mix. Thirdly, an estimated 82% of all HWFs work in the private sector necessitates adequate oversight for patient safety. Finally, a high proportion of unfilled positions in the public sector, especially in rural areas where 67% of the population lives, account only 11% of doctors and nurses. Conclusion Bangladesh is making progress on many of the milestones of the GSHRH, notably, the establishment of the HWF unit and reporting through the national health workforce accounts. However, particular investment on strengthening the intersectoral HWF coordination across sectors; regulation for assurance of patient safety and adequate oversight of the private sector; establishing accreditation mechanisms for training institutions; and halving inequalities in access to a qualified HWF are important towards advancing UHC in Bangladesh.

    Abstract: Background: The assessment is an integral part of the clinical teaching-learning process in undergraduate medical education. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted to identify the views of fresh MBBS graduates about the present assessment status of 'Allied Subjects of Surgery' in undergraduate medical education in Bangladesh. The study was conducted from January 2021 to December 2021. Self-administered semi-structured questionnaires were administered to collect data from 40 fresh MBBS graduates. Data were collected from purposively selected 40 fresh MBBS graduates who passed the MBBS course with the completion of internship training within five years working in government and private hospitals or giving health care services in their chamber after getting permission from the respondents. Results: This Study revealed that the conditions of different issues like formative assessments, summative assessments (Professional examinations), short answer questions (SAQ), multiple choice questions (MCQ), structured oral examinations (SOE), objective structured clinical examinations (OSCE) and short cases were poor and in case of long cases were very poor in most of the Allied Subjects of Surgery compared to General Surgery, Otolaryngology and Ophthalmology. These differences were also statistically highly significant in all cases. Conclusion: Hence it can be recommended that most of the Allied Subjects of Surgery should get optimum importance during the assessment procedures in undergraduate medical education of Bangladesh according to the health needs of the community and current global health care situation.     Abstract: This descriptive type of cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the learning styles of undergraduate medical students and their relation with preferred teaching-learning Methods. The study period was from July 2017 to June 2018. The study was carried out among the students of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th phases of the MBBS course at three government and four nongovernment medical colleges in Bangladesh. Out of seven medical colleges, four were within Dhaka and three outside Dhaka. The sample size was 1004. Medical colleges were selected purposively, and a convenience sampling technique was adopted for data collection. Bangla translated version of Fleming's VARK (visual, auditory, read/write, and kinesthetic) questionnaire was used to identify the learning styles of students. Linear regression was used to compare the VARK learning styles scores with teaching-learning Methods. The study revealed that out of 1004 medical students 64.2% preferred multimodal learning styles, and the rest, 35.8% preferred unimodal learning styles. Among unimodal learning preferences, auditory (A) and kinesthetic (K) were the most preferred sensory modalities of learning. The most preferred teaching Methods among the students were bedside teaching (29.9%), followed by tutorials (25.9%), and practical sessions (20.6%). The most preferred learning method among the students was mixed Methods (60.3%). A positive correlation was present between VARK modes and teaching-learning Methods (P 〈 0.05). Majority of students preferred multimodal learning styles. Students are able to learn effectively as long as the teacher provides a blend of visual, auditory, read/writing, and kinesthetic activities. The study recommended that teachers be aware of the medical students' learning styles and that aligning teaching-learning Methods with learning styles will improve their learning and academic performance.     Abstract: This descriptive type of cross-sectional study was carried out in 4 government and 4 non-government medical colleges of Bangladesh to assess the quality of undergraduate medical education. The study was conducted during the period of July 2018 to June 2019. The total sample size was 576, out of which there were 440 fifth year medical students, 114 clinical teachers and 22 Key informants. Convenience sampling technique was adopted. Two self - administered semi- structured questionnaires and one in-depth-interview schedule were utilized for the study. The study revealed that there was shortage of teaching staffs and infrastructure facilities. However numbers of hospital beds, indoor and outdoor patients were found to be sufficient. Study revealed that most of the students learned to take history, examine the patients; but had difficulties to make a provisional diagnosis. The clinical teaching in evening session was found to be neglected. Teachers could not ensure students’ learning of optimum skills and attitude. The study recommended reviewing the curriculum. Course burden should be reduced by removing redundant contents. The subjects namely Pathology, Microbiology and Pharmacology need to be rearranged to shift those to second phase.     Abstract: This descriptive cross sectional study was conducted to identify the teachers’ & students’ views according to extracurricular activities influencing academic performance of undergraduate medical students. The study period was July 2017 to June 2018.The study was carried out among four phases of undergraduate medical students & teachers of basic science, para clinical & clinical subjects of four (04) government & four (04) non-government selected medical colleges of Dhaka & outside Dhaka. Medical colleges were selected purposively & convenience sampling technique was adopted for data collection. A self-administered semi-structured questionnaire using five points Likert scale were administered on 58 teachers & 1020 students to collect data & an interview schedule was used to conduct in-depth interviews with 15 medical teachers. Study revealed that according to views of the medical students, factors like drug addiction 922(90.6%) & student politics 835(82.0%) were negatively influencing academic performance of undergraduate medical students. On the other hand, factors like indoor-outdoor games 791(77.7%), cultural activities 611(60.0%) & social activities 658(64.7%) were positively influencing on their academic performance. Findings of the students’ views were consistent with the teachers’ views. In-depth interview of the teachers revealed that students should take part in extra-curricular activities alongside their study. But it should be in a balanced way so that they do not hamper their study. Teachers should encourage students to participate in extra-curricular activities. Study recommended that medical campus should be kept free from the unhealthy student politics. Study also recommended to prevent drug addiction, the parents should be aware & the college authority should have adequate monitoring in the student hostels & should strictly implement any measure if required.     Abstract: This descriptive type of cross sectional study was carried out to evaluate the attitude of undergraduate medical students of Bangladesh regarding selected areas of professionalism like honesty and confidentiality. Study period was from July 2017 to June 2018. Sample size was 837 undergraduates medical students of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th phase of MBBS course from four public and four non government medical colleges of Bangladesh. Convenience sampling technique was adopted in this study. Data collection was done by a modified structured situational judgment test (SJT) self-administered questionnaire which was adopted from general medical council (GMC) and by in-depth interview schedule of students. The data were then compiled and analyzed using SPSS Version 19.Among the study participants, 37.20% (310) and 62 .80% (537) were males and females respectively. Attitude towards the two most major issues of professionalism were good, mean score were above three in honesty. Mean score was below three in maintaining confidentiality. Result of the present study shows that female students had higher mean professionalism than male. Female students were better than the male students in regards to all two different professional issues and this difference is statistically highly significant (P=0.00). Mean score of professionalism of 1st phase students in all two issues were greater than the respondents of other three phases and this findings was also statistically significant. Medical undergraduates of Bangladesh have a good understanding of acceptable professional honesty but there is scope of improvement. Study recommended that these two issues of professionalism must be taught in the course of undergraduate medical education and should be incorporated in undergraduate medical curriculum with the details of learning outcome what we craving from a registered medical graduate so that learning can be turned into practice.     Abstract: This descriptive type of cross sectional study was carried out to explore various personal factors that influences communication among medical teachers and students in selected medical colleges of Bangladesh. This study was done over a period of one year from July 2017 to June 2018. Five government & three non-government medical colleges were selected purposively. Students of first, second, third and fourth phases were selected by adopting convenience sampling technique Teachers were selected by convenience sampling technique and for in-depth interview by purposive sampling technique.  Medical teachers and students of selected medical colleges were the study population. Total 979 students and 50 teachers were responded through self-administered semi-structured questionnaire with five points Likert scale. Twenty teachers were responded through in-depth interview.Mutual respect (mean=4.44; 4.42), good communication skill (mean=4.40;4.16), listening skill (mean=4.32; 4.12), empathy (mean=4.32;4.32), self-disclosure (mean=4.27,4.42), sharing expectation (mean=4.29;4.28), awareness about own role (mean=4.25,4.34) were highly influencing personal factors that influence communication positively. Use of drugs/tobacco negatively affect communication, This study revealed some important factors that can improve communication .These are friendly relationship among teachers and students, open minded behavior of teachers, student- teachers cooperation, open discussion between teachers and students, morality and religious practice, motivation of students by teachers, understanding each other’s, avoidance of students politics, responsibility of students & teachers etc. This study also revealed communication barriers such as fear and shyness to teachers, humiliation and discrimination of students by teachers and lack of interest of students Addressing these issues at all possible levels, measures should be taken to improve communication among teachers and students in order to improved teaching learning process ; so that ultimate goal of medical education can be achieved.     Abstract: Abstract Introduction: This descriptive type of cross sectional study was conducted to assess teachers’ views regarding the alignment of contents of curriculum of undergraduate medical education in Bangladesh with the health related targets of Sustainable Development Goals. Methods: The study was conducted during the period of July 2018 to June 2019. The study used standardized pre-tested instruments. Convenience sampling technique was employed to include 04 public and 04 private medical colleges, of which 05 were located in Dhaka city and 03 were located outside Dhaka city. Data were collected from 123 faculty members by using self-administered semi-structured questionnaire and from 25 Key informants by using in-depth Interview schedule. Data entry and analysis was done using SPSS 19.0. Results: Among 123 medical teachers 84(68.3%) opined inadequacy of contents about neglected tropical diseases, 97(78.9%) about road traffic accidents, 103(83.7%) about narcotic drug abuse, 93(75.6%) about universal health coverage, 108(87.8%) about sexual health care services, 97(78.9%) viewed about tobacco control and 116(94.3%) about early warning about national and global health risks. Conclusion: To achieve the health related targets of SDG, the curriculum of undergraduate medical education should be reviewed with inclusion of relevant contents which will help students to achieve relevant competencies of SDGs.
