    Abstract: Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors are emerging treatments for atopic dermatitis (AD). Due to this novel role as a therapeutic option for patients with AD, we aimed to review current evidence on the pathophysiology and the safety and adverse effects (AEs) of oral JAK inhibitors for the treatment of AD utilizing the key terms atopic dermatitis, JAK inhibitors, and adverse effect or event. Our study indicated that oral JAK inhibitors have a moderate safety profile for use in AD in several reviews and phase II or III clinical trials. Headaches, nausea, and nasopharyngitis are the most commonly reported systemic AEs. Furthermore, acne, herpes simplex, herpes zoster, and eczema herpeticum are the most commonly recorded dermatological AEs. Current evidence indicates JAK inhibitors may also have less association with some of the serious AEs, although there is potential for increased risk of asthma, acute pancreatitis, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia. Whereas data remain limited for the long‐term safety of JAK inhibitor use in patients with AD, many ongoing clinical trials have promising preliminary results.

    Abstract: Infection control is a major determinant of guided tissue regeneration (GTR). This study aims to develop an antibiotic‐loaded membrane to assist periodontal repair. Methods Poly(D,L‐lactic acid) (PDLLA) nanofibers encapsulating amoxicillin (PDLLA‐AMX) were fabricated using the electrospinning technique, and their structures, drug encapsulation efficiency, and release characteristics were assessed. The viability and behaviors of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells on nanofibers, and antibacterial capabilities of nanofibers were evaluated in vitro . Early therapeutic efficiency of the antibiotic‐loaded membranes was investigated in rats with ligature‐induced experimental periodontitis, and the outcomes were evaluated by gene expression, microcomputed tomography imaging, and histology within 7 days of membrane placement. Results AMX was successfully encapsulated in the PDLLA nanofibers and released in a sustained manner. After initial attachment was achieved, cells stretched out along with the directions of nanofibers. The viability and expression of migration‐associated gene of PDL cells were significantly improved, and the growth of Streptococcus sanguinis and Porphyromonas gingivalis was significantly reduced in the PDLLA‐AMX group compared with the controls. On PDLLA‐AMX‐treated sites, wound dehiscence and sulcular inflammation were reduced. Collagen fiber matrix deposition was accelerated with upregulated type I collagen and interleukin‐1β, and downregulated matrix metalloproteinase‐8, whereas periodontal bone level and the expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor and core‐binding factor subunit alpha‐1 were equivalent to conventional membrane treatment. Conclusions PDLLA‐AMX nanofibers inhibited bacterial growth and promoted the viability and mobility of PDL cells after initial cell attachment. Membranes with PDLLA‐AMX nanofibers reduced inflammation and accelerated periodontal repair at an early stage, providing good prospects for the further development of GTR membranes.

    Abstract: Glutaric aciduria type 1 (GA-1) is a rare disease connected with speech delay and neurological deficits. However, the audiological and otologic profiles of GA-1 have not yet been fully characterized. To our knowledge, this is the largest study of comprehensive audiological and otologic evaluation in patients with GA-1 to date. Methods Thirteen patients diagnosed with GA-1 between January 1994 and December 2019 with audiological, radiological and genetic manifestations were retrospectively analyzed. Hearing tests were performed in all patients. MRI was performed for radiological evaluation. Results Hearing loss was found in 76.9% (10/13) of GA-1 patients, including slight hearing loss in 46.1% (6/13) of patients, mild hearing loss in 15.4% (2/13) of patients, and moderate hearing loss in 7.7% (1/13) of patients. Normal hearing thresholds were seen in 23% (3/13) of patients. Patients with intensive care unit (ICU) admission history showed significantly worse hearing than those without (29.17 ± 12.47 vs 13.56 ± 3.93 dB HL, 95% CI 2.92–24.70, p  = 0.0176). One patient had moderate sensorineural hearing loss and a past history of acute encephalopathic crisis. No usual causative gene mutations associated with hearing loss were found in these patients. MRI showed a normal vestibulocochlear apparatus and cochlear nerve. One patient with extensive injury of the basal ganglia on MRI after acute encephalopathic crisis was found to have moderate sensorineural hearing loss. Two patients with disability scores above 5 were found to have mild to moderate hearing impairment. No obvious correlation between macrocephaly and hearing loss was found. Conclusion A high prevalence of hearing impairment is found in GA-1 patients. Adequate audiological evaluation is essential for these patients, especially for those after encephalopathic crises or with ICU admission history.

    Abstract: Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most prevalent causes of hearing impairment and occupational diseases. Although multiple factors lead to noise-induced hearing loss, prevention and protection strategies remain limited. Studies in the past decade have employed antioxidants, especially N-acetyl-cysteine, to prevent noise-induced hearing loss. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials evaluated the effect of N-acetyl-cysteine on the prevention of noise-induced hearing loss. Material and methods This systematic review and meta-analysis included relevant studies from the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science by using related terms. The study only included randomized controlled trials in meta-analyses and assessed the quality of the identified randomized controlled trials by using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. Two authors extracted and calculated data on characteristics and hearing threshold. The results are presented as weighted mean difference (WMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Results This study identified five randomized controlled trials that randomized 1,115 patients into N-acetyl-cysteine and control groups. The meta-analysis evidenced that N-acetyl-cysteine has greater protective effects against hearing threshold shifts than the control in the 0 to 4 kHz (WMD = −3.39, 95% CI: −6.56 to −0.22) and 0 to 6 kHz (MD = −3.49, 95% CI: −6.57 to −0.41) subgroups. Conclusions The present review and meta-analysis recommends that N-acetyl-cysteine may be considered as an option for protective therapy for noise-induced hearing loss. Nonetheless, larger randomized controlled trials are requisite for further investigation and verification.

    Abstract: Supercapacitors (SCs) are promising for powering mobile devices, electric vehicles and smart power grids due to their fast charge/discharge rate, high power capability and robust cycle stability. Nitrogen-doped porous carbons are great alternatives because they provide pseudocapacitance without losing their power rate. Nanoporous carbon derived from metal organic frameworks (MOFs) is an ideal precursor for preparing heteroatom-doped carbons due to their abundant nitrogen contents and incredible specific surface areas. However, severe aggregations and the leakage of nitrogen can occur during harsh carbonization. In this study, we used CoAl-LDH (cobalt aluminum layered double hydroxide) as an in-situ growth substrate, allowing Co-based MOF to uniformly grow onto the CoAl-LDH to form a sandwiched MOF/LDH/MOF structure. After acid etching, we obtained waffle-like nanoporous carbons (WNPC). WNPC exhibited high nitrogen and oxygen retention (7.5 wt% and 9.1 wt%) and a broad mesopores distribution with specific surface areas of 594 m2g−1, which promoted a sieving effect. This renders a specific capacitance of 300.7 F·g−1 at 1 A·g−1 and the high retention (72%) of capacitance at 20 A·g−1, ensuring its use at high-rate supercapacitor electrodes. Finally, the WNPC symmetric supercapacitor reaches a superior specific energy of 27 W·h·kg−1 at a power of 500 W·kg−1, and a good cycle stability (85% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles).

    Abstract: The objective of this experimental study is to evaluate the power generation capability of an ethylene–air disk-shaped pressure gain combustor (DPGC). The main content of this paper focuses on discussing the DPGC testing results, consisting of detonation wave dynamics, power generation, and accompanying combustion instabilities. The experiments can be grouped into two stages. In the first stage, the DPGC was tested under atmospheric back condition. Continuous detonation wave dynamics were evaluated among various testing conditions. Evolution of the detonation wave velocity with respect to changes in the equivalence ratio has been discussed. In the second stage of the experiments, the DPGC was tested with a turbocharger installed. Shaft power extracted by the turbocharger turbine from the DPGC exhaust was used as a metric for evaluating the DPGC power output. During the operation of the DPGC and turbocharger, low- and intermediate-frequency combustion instabilities were observed, which coexisted with the high-frequency component associated with the circumferentially propagating detonation wave. The experimental results suggest that the DPGC shows superiority in compactness relative to conventional combustion power systems. However, more improvements need to be made with regard to overall thermal efficiency in order to achieve the benefits from detonation combustion.

    Abstract: Limestone is a relatively abundant and low-cost material used for producing calcium oxide as a CO2 adsorbent. However, the CO2 capture capacity of limestone decreases rapidly after multiple carbonation/calcination cycles. To improve the CO2 capture performance, we developed a process using limestone to transform the material into a rod Ca-based metal–organic framework (Ca-MOF) via a hydrothermal process with the assistance of acetic acid and terephthalic acid (H2BDC). The structural formation of rod Ca-MOF may result from the (200) face-oriented attachment growth of Ca-MOF sheets. Upon heat treatment, a highly stable porous rod network with a calcined Ca-MOF-O structure was generated with a pore distribution of 50–100 nm, which allowed the rapid diffusion of CO2 into the interior of the sorbent and enhanced the CO2 capture capacity with high multiple carbonation–calcination cycle stability compared to limestone alone at the intermediate temperature of 450 °C. The CO2 capture capacity of the calcined porous Ca-MOF-O network reached 52 wt% with a CO2 capture stability of 80% after 10 cycles. The above results demonstrated that rod Ca-MOF can be synthesized from a limestone precursor to form a porous network structure as a CO2 capture sorbent to improve CO2 capture performance at an intermediate temperature, thus suggesting its potential in environmental applications.

    Abstract: In this study, Ca-based multi-metals metal-organic framework (CaMgAl-MOF) has been designed as precursor material for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture to enhance the CO2 capture capacity and stability during multiple carbonation-calcination cycles. The CaMgAl-MOFs were constructed from self-assembly of metal ions and organic ligands through hydrothermal process to make metal ions uniformly distributed through the whole structure. Upon heat treatment at 600 °C, the Ca-based multi-metals CaMgAl-MOF would gradually transform to CaO and MgO nanoparticles along with the amorphous aluminum oxide distributed in the CaO matrix. XRD, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and SEM were used to identify the structure and characterize the morphology. The CO2 capture capacity and multiple carbonation-calcination cyclic tests of calcined Ca-based metal-organic framework (MOF) (attached with O and indicated as Ca-MOF-O) were performed by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The single metal component calcined Ca-MOF sorbent have the highest CO2 capture capacity up to 72 wt.%, but a lower stability of 61% due to severe particle aggregation. In contrast, a higher Ca-rich MOF oxide sorbent with tailoring the Mg/Al ratios, Ca0.97Mg0.025Al0.005-MOF-O, showed the best performance, not only having the high stability of ~97%, but also maintaining the highest capacity of 71 wt.%. The concept of using Ca-based MOF materials combined with mixed-metal ions for CO2 capture showed a potential route for achieving efficient multiple carbonation-calcination CO2 cycles.
