Abstract: In mountain areas, air circulation plays a major role in the forming of the climate. This paper examines how it influences thermal stress in the northern Carpathians. The Niedźwiedź’s classification of air circulation was applied. Thermal stress was assessed by Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI). Daily meteorological and circulation data for the period 1986–2015 were used for 20 stations in Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine. Air circulation was found to have a significant impact on thermal stress. The highest UTCI values are observed at Ca+Ka (centre of the high and anticyclonic wedge or ridge of high pressure) and the lowest values at N+NE and W+NW circulation; at the Southward stations, UTCI is higher than in the Northward ones; thermoneutral days are more frequent on the southward than on the northward slopes; during N+NE, E+SE and W+NW circulation and for heat stress days, the greatest thermal privilege of the southward slopes is observed at E+SE, S+SW, Ca+Ka and Cc+Bc (centre of low and through of low pressure) types of circulation.

Abstract: Background: Cinema programmes are set in advance (usually with a weekly frequency), which motivates us to investigate the short-term forecasting of attendance. In the literature on the cinema industry, the issue of attendance forecasting has gained less research attention compared to modelling the aggregate performance of movies. Furthermore, unlike most existing studies, we use data on attendance at the individual show level (179,103 shows) rather than aggregate box office sales. Objectives: In the paper, we evaluate short-term forecasting models of cinema attendance. The main purpose of the study is to find the factors that are useful in forecasting cinema attendance at the individual show level (i.e., the number of tickets sold for a particular movie, time and cinema). Methods/Approach: We apply several linear regression models, estimated for each recursive sample, to produce one-week ahead forecasts of the attendance. We then rank the models based on the out-of-sample fit. Results: The results show that the best performing models are those that include cinema- and region-specific variables, in addition to movie parameters (e.g., genre, age classification) or title popularity. Conclusions: Regression models using a wide set of variables (cinema- and region-specific variables, movie features, title popularity) may be successfully applied for predicting individual cinema shows attendance in Poland.

Abstract: The present study attempts to assess changes in soccer players’ physical and technical activity profiles due to thermal stress, measured with the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI), in training centres and during matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The study also verifies the theoretical models of soccer players’ physiological parameters. The study sample consisted of 945 observations of 340 players of national teams taking part in the World Cup in Russia. The measured variables included physical activities: total distance covered, distances covered with an intensity of 20–25 km/h, number of sprints; technical activities: number of shots, number of passes, pass accuracy and physiological indicators: evaporative water loss and heart rate. In addition, the final ranking places of each national team were also used in the study. The UTCI was calculated based on meteorological data recorded at training centres and during matches. The UTCI records were then classified into two ranges: NTS—no thermal stress (UTCI 9–26 °C) and TS—thermal stress (UTCI 〉  26 °C). Climatic conditions at soccer training centres assessed as involving “no thermal stress” are found to be more beneficial for increasing the total distance covered and the number of sprints performed by players during a match. The theoretical models for determining soccer players’ physiological parameters used in the study reduce the players’ heart rate effort and evaporative water loss, which is in line with findings in studies by other authors. The climatic conditions at soccer training centres and during tournament matches should be taken into account in planning preparations for future World Cup tournaments, especially those in hotter countries.

Abstract: The possibility of efficient work function tuning of high‐quality graphene, grown on 6H‐SiC(0001), by covering it with thermally evaporated rhenium heptoxide (Re 2 O 7 ) is presented. Raman spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet electron spectroscopy are used for structural, chemical, and electronic characterization of Re 2 O 7 /graphene heterostructures. The deposited oxide does not induce any defects in the high‐quality graphene lattice and results in a relatively small change in optical transmittance. The observed increase in the work function of the Re 2 O 7 /graphene heterostructure (+0.76 eV) emphasizes great potential of modified graphene for use as transparent anode and hole transport layer in organic electronics.

Abstract: Klimat i jego zmiany wpływają na stan zdrowia pojedynczych osób i całych społeczeństw.

Abstract: There is a host of evidence for the role of bioactive sphingolipids in cancer biology, and dysregulated sphingolipid metabolism was observed in many malignant tumors. The aim of the present study was to provide more detailed data on sphingolipid metabolism in different stages of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). Samples of the tumor and noncancerous fragments of the same kidney were collected from patients who underwent a radical nephrectomy. The subjects were stratified according to the degree of malignancy of the tumor ( n  = 14 for G2, 12 for G3, and 9 for G4). The content of bioactive sphingolipids/glycosphingolipids was measured with an HPLC and HPTLC method, and the mRNA and protein expression of sphingolipid transporters and metabolizing enzymes was evaluated using real‐time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Western blot, respectively. Compared to healthy kidney tissue, ccRCC was characterized by accumulation of sphingosine, sphingosine‐1‐phosphate (S1P), ceramide, dihydrosphingosine, and dihydroceramide. However, in the case of the latter two, the accumulation was limited to higher malignancy grades. In addition, compared to the healthy tissue, the content of gangliosides in the tumor was increased at the expense of globosides. We also found profound grade‐dependent changes in the mRNA level of S1P‐metabolizing enzymes, and spinster homolog 2. In general, their expression was much higher in G2 tumors compared to higher malignancy grades. We conclude that ccRCC is characterized by profound and multilevel alterations in sphingolipid metabolism, which to a large extent are grade‐dependent. We hypothesize that dysregulation of sphingolipid metabolism contributes to the progression of ccRCC.

Abstract: The paper presents the identification process of the mathematical model parameters of a differential-drive two-wheeled mobile robot. The values of the unknown parameters of the dynamics model were determined by carrying out their identification offline with the Levenberg-Marguardt method and identification online with the Recursive least-squares method. The authors compared the parameters identified by offline and online methods and proposed to support the recursive least squares method with the results obtained by offline identification. The correctness of the identification process of the robot dynamics model parameters, and the operation of the control system was verified by comparing the desired trajectories and those obtained through simulation studies and laboratory tests. Then an analysis of errors defined as the difference between the values of reference position, orientation and velocity, and those obtained from simulations and laboratory tests was carried out. On itd basis, the quality of regulation in the proposed algorithm was determined.

Abstract: This article provides a simulation and laboratory study of a control system for a two-wheeled differential-drive mobile robot with ROS system. The authors propose an approach to designing a control system based on a parametric model of the robot’s dynamics. The values of unknown parameters of the dynamic model have been determined by means of a Levenberg-Marguardt identification method. By comparing the desired trajectories with those obtained from simulation and laboratory tests, and based on errors analysis, the correctness of the model parameter identification process and the control system operation was then determined.

Abstract: This paper explores the applicability of on-board diagnostics data for minimizing inertial navigation errors in vehicles. The results of driving tests were presented and discussed. Knowledge  of a vehicle’s exact initial position and orientation was crucial in the navigation process. Orientation errors at the beginning of navigation contributed to positioning errors. GPS data were not processed by the algorithm during navigation.
