    Abstract: Although the original purpose of the systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) classification criteria was to distinguish SLE from other mimic diseases, and to facilitate sample selection in scientific research, they have become widely used as diagnostic criteria in clinical situations. It is not known yet if regarding classification criteria as diagnostic criteria, what problems might be encountered? This is the first study comparing the three sets of classification criteria for SLE, the 1997 American College of Rheumatology (ACR’97), 2012 Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC’12) and 2019 European League Against Rheumatism/American College of Rheumatology (EULAR/ACR’19), for their ability to distinguish patients with SLE from patients with pure mucocutaneous manifestations (isolated cutaneous lupus erythematosus without internal disease, i-CLE) in the lupus disease spectrum. 1,865 patients with SLE and 232 patients with i-CLE were recruited from a multicenter study. We found that, due to low specificity, none of the three criteria are adept at distinguishing patients with SLE from patients with i-CLE. SLICC’12 performed best among the original three criteria, but if a positive ANA was removed as an entry criterion, EULAR/ACR’19 would performed better. A review of previous studies that compared the three sets of criteria was presented in this work.

    Abstract: The spacecraft relative motion trajectory planning is one of the enabling techniques for autonomous proximity operations, especially in the increasingly complicated mission environments. Most traditional trajectory planning methods focus on improving the performance criteria in the deterministic conditions, whereas various uncertain elements in practice would significantly degrade the trajectory performance. Considering the uncertainties underlying the collision avoidance constraints, this paper suggests a model predictive control based online trajectory planning framework in which the obstacle information in higher-precision would be consistently updated by the onboard sensor. To improve the computational efficiency of the online planning framework, the rotating hyperplane (RH) technique is utilized to transform the nonlinear ellipsoidal keep-out zone constraints into convex formulations. And the concept of rotation window is introduced to eliminate the unexpected mismatch between the spacecraft motion and hyperplane rotation in the conventional RH method, which in sequence improves the RH method’s capability for multiple obstacle avoidance problem. Moreover, a three-dimensional (3-D) extension strategy is proposed to simplify the computation procedure when applying the RH method for a 3-D collision avoidance problem. Numerical simulations are carried out to validate the performance of the proposed online trajectory planning framework in addressing the uncertain collision avoidance constraints.

    Abstract: Erythropoietin (EPO) has antiapoptotic, antioxidative, and anti-inflammatory effects on ischemia tissues and protects against acute lung injury (ALI) induced by ischemia-reperfusion (I/R). p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases (p38 MAPK) signaling is involved in the processes of I/R-induced ALI. However, the interaction of EPO with p38 MAPK signaling in I/R-induced ALI has not been reported. To explore this issue, we constructed an I/R-induced ALI model in vivo and in vitro using Sprague Dawley rats and BEAS-2B cells. Some I/R rats and hypoxia-reoxygenation (H/R)–induced cells were treated with EPO, and the others were used as control groups. The injuries of lung tissues and cells were respectively assessed by inflammatory cytokine, morphologic changes, cell viability, apoptosis, and oxidative damage–related factors. Western blot determined key proteins in the p38 MAPK signaling. Results indicated that I/R induced the increase of inflammatory factors, lung weight, filtration coefficient, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid protein content, apoptosis, neutrophil, and lung peroxidation, and H/R caused cell growth inhibition, apoptosis, and oxidative damage-related factors’ release. EPO attenuated I/R-induced injury in vivo and in vitro. Furthermore, the increase of p-p38, p-JNK, and p-ERK1/2 in lung tissues and cells induced by I/R was downregulated by EPO. Moreover, both EPO and an inhibitor of p38 MAPK (SB203580) alleviated H/R-induced cell injury. Erythropoietin along with SB203580 had more obvious protection effects than EPO alone. Collectively, EPO alleviated I/R-induced ALI by blocking p38 MAPK signaling. The interaction mechanism of EPO with p38 MAPK signaling contributes to understanding the processes of I/R-induced ALI and provides new insights for the disease treatment.

    Abstract: Minichromosome maintenance (MCM) proteins play an important role in replication and cell cycle progression. Even so, their expression and prognostic roles in cancer remain controversial. Methods: To address this issue, the study investigated the roles of MCMs in the prognosis of GC by using ONCOMINE, GEPIA2, UALCAN, Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia (CCLE), the Human Protein Atlas, Kaplan-Meier Plotter, cBioPortal, GeneMANIA, and DAVID databases. Results: Over expressions of mRNA and cell lines were found in all members of the MCM family, and MCMs were found to be significantly associated with pathological tumor grades in GC patients. Besides, higher mRNA expressions of MCM1/5/7 were found to be significantly associated with shorter overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (FP) in GC patients, while higher mRNA expression of MCM4/6/9 were connected with favorable OS and FP. Moreover, a high mutation rate of MCMs (68%) was also observed in GC patients. Conclusions: The results indicated that MCM1/5/7 were potential targets of precision therapy for patients with GC. And MCM4/6/9 were new biomarkers for the prognosis of GC. The results of the study will contribute to supplement the existing knowledge, and help to explore therapeutic targets and enhance the accuracy of prognosis for patients with GC.

    Abstract: Plain language summary Comparison of the outcomes of patients with HCC with or without donafenib after radical resection to better understand the efficacy and safety of postoperative adjuvant donafenib Why was this study done? Donafenib is the only new-generation targeted drug developed in the past 14 years that has demonstrated superior efficacy and increased safety in the first-line treatment of HCC. We aimed to explore whether postoperative adjuvant donafenib can improve the prognosis of patients with HCC at high-risk of recurrence. What did the researchers do? Medical data of patients with HCC at high-risk of recurrence who underwent radical resection at two medical centers between April 2021 and October 2022 were collected to compare long-term outcomes of patients treated with and without donafenib and explore the safety of adjuvant donafenib treatment. What did the researchers find? A total of 196 patients with HCC at high-risk of recurrence, including 49 who received adjuvant donafenib treatment and 147 who did not, were analyzed. At a median follow-up of 21.8 months, it was observed that adjuvant donafenib treatment effectively reduced early recurrence among patients with HCC at high-risk of recurrence, while exhibiting favorable safety and compliance profiles. What do the findings mean? The study provides real-world clinical empirical data on adjuvant donafenib treatment for patients with HCC at high-risk of recurrence, and these results may provide new directions for adjuvant treatment of HCC.

    Abstract: Selenium (Se) plays a key role in controlling several processes in plant development, such as root growth and regulation of enzyme activity. However, research on the effects of Se in Sophora tonkinensis, a medicinal plant, has not been reported. To elucidate the effect of Se on the accumulation of secondary metabolites in tissue-cultured seedlings of S. tonkinensis. Materials and Methods Tissue culture seedlings of S. tonkinensis was treated with different concentrations of Se in the rooting medium. Agronomic traits of roots and concentrations of hormones and some secondary metabolites were measured from seedlings. Results The results show that (1) root growth of tissue culture seedlings were stimulated by Se; (2) a specific amount of Se enhanced the activities of peroxidase (POD) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), as well as the production and storage of soluble proteins and chlorophyll; and (3) Se treatment lowered brassinolide (BR) content, and 15 mg/L Se minimized abscisic acid (ABA) content, while 60 mg/L Se enhanced ABA content. The gibberellin (GA 3 ) content in seedlings increased significantly compared with the control under the treatment of 60 mg/L Se. Conclusion Se concentration of 30 mg/L facilitated matrine and oxymatrine production and accumulation in stem/leaf tissues.

    Abstract: Diagnostic criteria for multiple sclerosis have evolved over time, with the most recent being the 2017 McDonald criteria. Evidence is lacking regarding the validity of the 2017 McDonald criteria among the Asian population. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the 2017 McDonald criteria in Chinese patients with clinically isolated syndrome (CIS). Methods: A total of 93 patients with initial findings suggestive of CIS in a tertiary hospital in China from 2012 to 2017 were included in this retrospective study. Baseline and follow-up data were reviewed. Diagnostic performance (sensitivity, specificity, accuracy), was assessed and survival analysis was performed for the 2017 and 2010 McDonald criteria respectively. Results: Among the 93 Chinese patients with CIS, 57 were female (61.3%) and the median (interquartile range) age of onset was 37 (31.3–41.8) years. The 2017 McDonald criteria displayed a higher sensitivity (75.0% versus 14.6%, p  〈  0.0001), lower specificity (47.1% versus 100.0%, p  〈  0.05) but an overall higher accuracy (67.7% versus 36.9%, p  〈  0.0001) when compared with the 2010 iteration. The novel criteria allow for a better detection of MS at baseline (40.8% versus 9.9%, p  〈  0.0001). Conclusion: The 2017 McDonald criteria had a higher sensitivity but lower specificity than the 2010 iteration. Overall it facilitated an earlier and more accurate diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in Chinese patients with CIS.

    Abstract: Epstein–Barr virus-associated gastric cancer (EBVaGC) has unique clinicopathologic features and our present understanding of its treatment outcome is limited. Here, we investigated the clinical outcomes of resectable and metastatic EBVaGC cases with regards to their respective treatment. Methods: We retrieved the data of EBVaGC patients treated at our center from October 2014 to June 2019. The primary endpoint was overall survival (OS). Secondary endpoints were disease-free survival (DFS) for stage I–III patients, progression-free survival (PFS) and objective response rate (ORR) for stage IV patients. Results: Patients classified as stage I–III accounted for 83.7% of the total 197 cases analyzed. Two patients had mismatched repair-deficiency. The 5-year OS rate of the entire cohort was 63.51% [95% (confidence interval (CI): 52.31–72.76%]. Tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) stage and gastric stump cancer were identified as independent prognostic factors for OS. The 3- and 5-year DFS rate for stage I–III patients were 83.72% (95% CI: 75.86–89.19%) and 73.83% (95% CI: 60.39–83.32%), respectively. TNM stage III, neural invasion, lymphovascular invasion, and baseline plasma EBV-DNA positive were correlated with shorter DFS. The ORR and disease control rate (DCR) for metastatic EBVaGC patients to first-line therapy were 29.0% and 90.3% (median PFS: 9.8 months), respectively, and to second-line therapy were 25.0% and 75.0%, respectively. Seven patients received anti-PD1 therapy and had an ORR of 28.5% and a median PFS of 2.8 months. Conclusions: EBVaGC patients have few metastases, long DFS, and high DCR. TNM stage and gastric stump cancer were independent prognostic factors for OS.

    Abstract: Short segment myelitis (SSM, 〈 3 vertebral segments) is an under-recognized initial manifestation of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD). Though infrequent, failure to recognize SSM in patients with NMOSD would lead to incorrect diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, delineation of features of NMOSD-associated SSM is of paramount importance. Objective: Our study aimed to determine the demographic, clinical and radiological features of NMOSD-associated SSM, and compare those with NMOSD-associated longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM) and multiple sclerosis (MS)-associated SSM, respectively. Methods: Chinese patients presenting initially only with acute myelitis and diagnosed with NMOSD ( n = 46) and MS ( n = 11) were included. Clinical, serological, imaging and disability data were collected. Mann–Whitney U test or two-tailed Fisher’s exact tests were used to analyse the data. Results: Of the 46 enrolled NMOSD patients, 34 (74%) collectively had 38 LETM lesions, while 12 (26%) had 14 SSM lesions. When compared with LETM, NMOSD presenting with SSM were more likely to have a delayed diagnosis and a lower level of disability at nadir during the first attack. T1-weighted imaging hypointensity was more prominent in NMOSD-associated LETM lesions than NMOSD-associated SSM lesions. When compared with MS-associated SSM, NMOSD-associated SSM lesions were more likely to be centrally located, grey matter involving and transversally extensive on axial imaging and spanned no less than 2 vertebral segments on sagittal imaging. Conclusion: These findings suggest that SSM does not preclude the possibility of a NMOSD diagnosis. Testing for serum aquaporin-4 immunoglobulin G (AQP4-IgG) and careful study of lesions on spinal cord magnetic resonance imaging could aid in an earlier and correct diagnosis.

    Abstract: To validate the recently proposed imaging criteria in distinguishing aquaporin-4 antibody (AQP4-ab)-seropositive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) from multiple sclerosis (MS) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disorder (MOG-AD) at disease onset in a Chinese population. Methods: We enrolled 241 patients in this retrospective study, including 143 AQP4-ab-seropositive NMOSD, 73 MS, and 25 MOG-AD. Cacciaguerra’s criteria were described as fulfillment of at least 2/5 conditions including the absence of the combined juxtacortical/cortical lesions, the presence of longitudinal extensive transverse myelitis (LETM) lesions, the presence of periependymal-lateral ventricles lesions, the absence of Dawson’s fingers lesions, and the absence of periventricular lesions. Results: Fulfillment of at least 3/5 conditions was able to differentiate NMOSD from MS with a good diagnostic performance (accuracy = 0.92, sensitivity = 0.91, specificity = 0.93), yet failed to differentiate NMOSD from MOG-AD. LETM lesions showed the highest accuracy (0.78), sensitivity (0.70), and specificity (0.97) for NMSOD. Conclusion: Our research suggested the utility of Cacciaguerra’s criteria in a Chinese population at disease onset. A better diagnostic performance in NMOSD could be attained with at least 3/5 conditions fulfilled. Yet their utility in distinguishing NMOSD from MOG-AD was limited.
