    Abstract: The marine actinomyces Micrococcus was the most common bacterium among the isolates corals, sponges, and alga isolates. Only a few investigations of natural compounds from Micrococcus sp. were reported previously. This study implicated the soft coral-associated Micrococcus sp. strain A-2-28 (following relative Micrococcus flavus LW4T) for large-scale cultivation, chemical analyses, and biological activities. Whereas crude extract of the strain A-2-28 inhibited only Staphylococcus epidermidis, metabolites profiles and pure compounds from strain A-2-28 showed that this strain produced phytohormone (IAA), metabolized some new compounds which were almost inactive for biological tests. This work suggested that it is possible to plan a new strategy for improving coral health and resilience though their associated microbial.

    Abstract: Seven ent-kaurane diterpenoids from Croton tonkinensis were tested for cytotoxicity against human HCC HepG2 cell line. The abrogation of mortalin-p53 interaction represent an original anticancer therapeutic approach. Teritary structure of protein mortalin was constructed using Protein Structure Prediction Server and crystal structure of p53 was selected from Protein Data Bank involving mortalin-p53 binding domain. Molecular docking studies revealed that the interaction with protein mortalin is more prominent than p53   compound 5 and 1 as the most two potential mortalin-p53 binding inhibitors based on binding free energy and interacting residues analysis.

    Abstract: Microbial communities associated with invertebrates had been considered as a new source of bioactive compounds. The soft coral associated bacteria in Mot island, Nha Trang bay were isolated, extracted and assessed for antagonistic activity against human and coral pathogens, the strongly active strains were identified by 16S rRNA analysis. The soft coral associated bacterium SCN10 had abcd antibacterial pattern which was named for inhibition towards Bacillus subtilis (pattern a), Escherichia coli (pattern b), Salmonella typhimurium (pattern c) and Serratia marcescens (pattern d). It was the nearest strain to the well-known antibiotic producer Bacillus amyloliquefaciens with 99% sequence similarity. Whereas strain SCL19 had abde pattern which means inhibition of the growth of B. subtilis, E. coli, S. marcescens and Vibrio parahaemolyticus (pattern e). This strain SCL19 affiliated with Bacillus sp. strain A-3-23B with 99.8% identity. In addition to antimicrobial activity to the aforementioned tested bacteria, the isolate SCX15 also inhibited Vibrio alginolyticus (pattern f) and Candida albicans (pattern g), so this isolate possessed abcdefg antimicrobial pattern. The coral associated isolate SCX15 was identified as Bacillus velezensis with 99% sequence similarity. Among the 78 screened strains, 25 isolates possessed antibacterial activity against at least one of seven tested microorganisms and exhibited 12 different types of antimicrobial activities, suggesting that they can produce many different natural substances with antibacterial activity.

    Abstract: The antioxidant activities against DPPH free radical of crude extracts using ethyl acetate and methanol from ink sac, muscles, and bones of 5 squid species (Uroteuthis chinensis, Uroteuthis sibogae, Uroteuthis duvaucelii, Sepia esculenta, Sepioteuthis lessoniana) collected in Khanh Hoa waters were investigated. These activities ranged from 4.21% (ethyl acetate extract from ink of U. chinensis) to 54.51% (methanol extract from muscle of S. esculenta.). The functional group analysis by infrared adsorption spectrum (FTIR) in these crude extracts revealed the absorption peaks of melanin in ink, polysaccharide in bone and protein in muscle extracts. In addition, the SDS-PAGE result of some methanol extracts showed the presence of proteins with a molecular weight of 30-150 kDa.

    Abstract: The fan-bellied leatherjacket skin was treated to extract collagen by chemical method. The non-collagenous substances and the pigment in the skin were removed with NaOH and H2O2, respectively. Collagen was extracted with acetic acid. The treatment and extraction conditions were optimized by response surface methodology. The concentrations, skin/solution ratios (g/ml) and times were surveyed. The optimum conditions to remove the non-collagenous substances were as follows: the concentration of NaOH at 0.15M, the ratio (g/ml) at 1/13.9, time at 56.9 hours. Using H2O2 with the concentration at6%, the skin/solution ratio (g/ml) at 1/2, time at 10 minutes were suitable values for skin pigmentation removal. For collagen extraction, the concentration of acetic acid at 0.53M, skin/solution ratio at 1/9.6 g/ml and time in 59.6 hours were optimal.

    Abstract: A fatal neurotoxic poisoning case happened in Khanh Hoa province in 2020 after eating a certain number of marine gastropods, later identified as Nassarius glans, one of the common marine gastropods in Vietnam. As the remaining causative food in the incident, 62 specimens were collected to examine tetrodotoxin toxicity individual variation and frequency of toxic specimens by using HILIC/MS-MS analysis. 100% of studied specimens exhibited toxicity (556 ± 821 MU/g) beyond the regulatory level of consumption (10 MU/g) for puffer(fish) recommended in Japan and extensive variation (18–4,046 MU/g). The result pointed out that only 5 g of soft tissue from N. glans (equivalent to 2–3 specimens) containing maximum toxicity detected in the present study may cause human death if consumed. Fhe first time, this study identified TTXs in the gastropods as a causative toxin in the poisoning in Vietnam. Moreover, 65.5% of studied specimens with high toxicity higher than 100 MU/g, including 16.1%, showing extremely high toxicity ( 〉 1,000 MU/g). The results suggested that this gastropod is quite dangerous for human consumption and should be alerted to public awareness.

    Abstract: Recent studies have shown that the seawater, sediment and commercial bivalve molluscs in the studied area have been contaminated by some heavy metals Zn, Cu, Pb and Cr. Highly toxic heavy metals like As, Cd, Pb, Hg have tended to accumulate in the tissue of clams. This paper presents the levels of some heavy metals in the seawater, sediment and soft part of oyster (Crassostrea belcheri) samples collected from the western estuaries of Ganh Rai bay in 2015 and 2017. The results also showed that Ha Thanh and Rach Lo sites recorded the highest contents of most studied metals in oyster samples. Levels of metals in oyster were in the order of Zn 〉 Cu 〉 As 〉 Pb 〉 Cr 〉 Cd 〉 Hg and the contents of metals in oyster did not reflect a correlation with those in surrounding environment. Concerning food safety criteria, Pb, Cd and Hg contents were lower than acceptable limit given by the compilation of FAO (1983), whereas As, Cu and Zn contents exceeded the legal limit, especially Zn contents. Cu and Cr contents in sediment samples of Nga Bay and Dong Hoa estuaries were between LEL-SEL values (≥ LEL and 〈 SEL), which may cause biological impacts at moderate level.

    Abstract: Fish bone by-products are considered as abundant source of hydroxyapatite (HAp). The preparation of HAp from fish bones not only contributes to improving the value of by-products but also minimizes negative impacts on the environment. In this study, nanohydroxyapatite was successfully obtained from Lates calcarifer fish bone purchased from seafood export company in Khanh Hoa province. Fish bones were under alkali treatment and then heated at 600oC within different time intervals of 1, 2 and 4 hours. Analysis of XRD and SEM showed that the calcium formed was completely single-phase and possessed an average size of 50–64 nm depending on the calcination time. The results of the Ca/P molar ratio from 1.839 to 1.847 prove that the nano-HAp powders are B-type biological hydroxyapatites, which has been confirmed by FTIR spectrum. In addition, the content of heavy metals such as As, Pb, Hg, Cd is detected within safety limits. These properties allow nano-HAp powders to be applied in food and medicine fields.

    Abstract: Deltas of large rivers, especially in arid areas, have been used in ancient times for agriculture and are densely populated. In recent decades, many river deltas have been experiencing an increasing anthropogenic impact, contamination of watersheds, and marine pollution caused by the offshore extraction of hydrocarbons. Combining of these factors determines a considerable research interest in river mouth areas. This paper presents the annual monitoring data on the water environment of the two mouths of the Cai river and Tac river, Nha Trang bay, during the period 2015–2019. Statistical data showed an increase in dissolved oxygen demand (DO), biological oxygen demand BOD5, and the concentrations of ammonia, Zn and Cu. Seasonal variation revealed that most of studied parameters’ concentrations, especially nutrients, were higher in the rainy season. In contrast, the values of total suspended solids (TSS) and hydrocarbon (Cai River), and petroleum (Tac river) demonstrated a decrease. Generally, the average value of BOD5, concentrations of Cu and Pb at the Cai river mouth were lower than those at the Tac river mouth, whereas the concentration of Zn was higher. Overall, the water environment of both mouths was qualified for aquaculture and aquatic organism preservation purposes except for the case of coliform.

    Abstract: Seagrasses are a paraphyletic group of marine angiosperms that evolved three to four times from land plants and returned to the sea. Halophila ovalis, Thalassia hemprichii and Enhalus acoroides (Hydrocharitaceae) are species that can occur in wide salinity ranges. Sulfated polysaccharides (SPs) comprise a complex group of macromolecules with many critical biological functions. We assume that SP may play a role in salt tolerance in seagrass. In this study, three seagrass species collected in both rainy and dry seasons from the fields were analyzed to determine the total SP contents and different functional groups of SP. Quantification of total SP was done by photometric assays. High-performance anion-exchange chromatography with Pulsed Electrochemical Detection (HPAEC) determined different functional groups of SPs. The results indicated higher total SP contents in seagrass are present in plants at higher salinities and environmental temperatures. The percent of functional groups of SPs are present in the following order: glucose 〉 galactose 〉 arabinose 〉 mannose 〉 rhamnose 〉 fucose. The order is not different between the two seasons.
