    Kurzfassung: This study performed two different analyses using a large set of population data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service Health Screening Cohort to evaluate the interactional association between temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). Two nested case–control population-based studies were conducted on 514,866 participants. In Study I, 4455 participants with TMD were matched with 17,820 control participants, with a ratio of 1:4. In Study II, 6076 participants with PD were matched with 24,304 control participants, with a ratio of 1:4. Obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, systolic, diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose level, and total cholesterol were adjusted. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) for TMD was 1.43 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.02–2.00) in PD patients compared to non-PD patients in Study I (p 〈 0.001). The adjusted OR for PD was 1.56 (95% CI = 1.13–2.15) in TMD patients compared to non-TMD patients in Study II (p = 0.007). This study demonstrated that patients with TMD have a significantly higher risk of developing PD and, conversely, those with PD have a significantly higher risk of developing TMD.

    Kurzfassung: In recent years, several studies have reported the recycling of by-products generated by the paper industry and their application to the construction industry. A majority of the existing studies used waste paper sludge ash, and considerable energy is consumed in such incineration processes. This may further contribute to air pollution. In this study, we used waste newspaper (WNP), which underwent a simple crushing process without a separate high-temperature treatment process, and we integrated it in cement mortar. We prepared mortars containing 0%, 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, and 1.0% ground WNP as a cement substitute. Subsequently, the fluidity, compressive strength, tensile strength, carbonation depth, drying shrinkage, and microstructure of the mortars were compared and analyzed. The 28-day compressive strength of the mortar samples with WNP was approximately 3.2–16.1% higher than that of the control sample. The 28-day accelerated carbonation depth of the samples with WNP was approximately 1.03–1.61 mm. Furthermore, their carbonation resistance was approximately 5.2–39.4% higher than that of the control sample. Compressive strength, tensile strength, and carbonation resistance were improved by appropriately using ground WNP as a cement substitute in cement mortar. In this study, the appropriate amount of WNP according to the mechanical properties of cement mortar was found to be 0.4–0.8%, and considering the durability characteristics, the value 0.6 was the most ideal.

    Kurzfassung: Prognosis prediction of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with mandibular invasion is controversial, and a more sophisticated staging system to aid prognosis could be developed with imaging characteristics of bone invasion. Imaging-feature analysis provides practical, stratified results for survival prognosis in oral SCC (OSCC) of the mandible, and imaging advances enable more detailed tumor visualization. We retrospectively evaluated significant bone-invasion features associated with poor outcomes in mandibular OSCC to assess the predictive value of staging criteria that combined imaging features and histologic grade (combined imaging–histology (IH) grade) in 65 patients (39 men, 26 women) with mandibular SCC diagnosed from 2006 to 2016. Clinicopathologic features, including T-stage and histologic grade, and prognosis were retrieved. Tumors were classified into three types by extent of mandibular invasion on pretreatment imaging studies. Moreover, we assessed the involvement of the mandibular canal. We examined the correlation of factors associated with locoregional recurrence and overall mortality. The Harrell Concordance Index (C-index) determined prognostic performance of predictors. Nineteen (29%) patients showed locoregional recurrence and 13 (20%) died. For locoregional recurrence and mortality rates, imaging-detected mandibular canal (MC) involvement is a stronger prognostic factor for recurrence (C-index = 0.61 〉 0.58) and survival (C-index = 0.58 〉 0.63) than histopathologically confirmed perineural invasion, as was the IH grade, especially IH Grade 3, which was significantly associated with worse locoregional recurrence (p 〈 0.02). Imaging-based staging showed higher prognostic performance than T-staging (C-index = 0.57 (recurrence), 0.60 (death)), when combined with histologic grading (C-index = 0.69 for both) or used alone (C-index = 0.63 (locoregional recurrence), 0.69 (death)). Overall survival was significantly stratified by Imaging type and IH grade. Therefore, analysis of imaging features provided more specific, practical results for survival prognosis in mandibular OSCC. Imaging advances can potentially provide detailed gross views of tumor masses to facilitate development of prognostic criteria for OSCC.

    Kurzfassung: Dendritic cells (DCs) are the main mediators of Th2 immune responses in allergic asthma, and Fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 ligand (Flt3L) is an important growth factor for the development and homeostasis of DCs. This study identified the DC populations that primarily cause the initiation and development of allergic lung inflammation using Fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 (Flt3) knockout (KO) mice with allergen-induced allergic asthma. We observed type 2 allergic lung inflammation with goblet cell hyperplasia in Flt3 KO mice, despite a significant reduction in total DCs, particularly CD103+ DCs, which was barely detected. In addition, bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs) from Flt3 KO mice directed Th2 immune responses in vitro, and the adoptive transfer of these BMDCs exacerbated allergic asthma with more marked Th2 responses than that of BMDCs from wild-type (WT) mice. Furthermore, we found that Flt3L regulated the in vitro expression of OX40 ligand (OX40L) in DCs, which is correlated with DC phenotype in in vivo models. In conclusion, we revealed that Flt3-independent CD11b+ DCs direct Th2 responses with the elevated OX40L and are the primary cause of allergic asthma. Our findings suggest that Flt3 is required to control type 2 allergic inflammation.

    Kurzfassung: Improving the accuracy of the digital model is essential for the digitalization of the dental field. This study introduced a novel method of objective accuracy evaluation of digitized full dental arch model using coordinate measuring machine (CMM). To obtain a true linear measurement value using the CMM, 17 reference balls were attached to the typodont, and 12 measurements between balls on the X-(width), Y-(length), and Z-axes (height) were performed automatically. A rubber impression and a plaster cast replica of the typodont with balls were fabricated, and they were digitized with following methods: (a) true model intraoral scans; (b) impression cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans; (c) cast CBCT scans; and (d) cast extraoral scans. Each scanning method was performed 20 times. Twelve linear measurements on the digitized models were automatically made using software. The one-sample t-test and one-way analysis of variance were used for measurement accuracy analysis. The cast extraoral scan was most accurate on X- and Y-axes, while impression CBCT was the most accurate on Z-axis. Over all axes, the intraoral scan resulted in the most deviation from the true model, and the reproducibility of each scan was also low. Extraoral scan shows high precision on width and length, and impression CBCT is advantageous for dental work where height factor is of importance.

    Kurzfassung: Recently, the number of patients who visit the hospital with symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) has been gradually increasing, and the need for special imaging such as cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasing for accurate diagnosis and treatment. The purpose of this study was to help the image guideline by comparing the usefulness of CBCT and MRI according to the clinical symptoms of TMD patients and further examining whether the usefulness varies with age. A total of 473 temporomandibular joints (TMJs) with clinical symptoms of TMD who underwent both CBCT and MRI examinations were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical symptoms included pain, sound and limited mouth opening. The CBCT findings included sclerosis, flattening, erosion and osteophyte, while the MRI findings were defined as disc deformity, disc derangement or joint effusion. Joints were divided according to the presence of CBCT and MRI findings as follows: type I (neither CBCT nor MRI findings), type II (only CBCT findings), type III (only MRI findings) and type IV (both CBCT and MRI findings). We assessed the usefulness of the two imaging modalities by comparing the frequency of those four groups according to clinical symptoms and age. In TMD patients with the clinical symptoms, MRI and CBCT are complementary, but if it is difficult to choose the first of these two modalities, MRI is more recommended, and the younger the patient, the more the MRI is recommended.

    Kurzfassung: Armillariella tabescens (Scop.) Sing., a mushroom of the family Tricholomataceae, has been used in traditional oriental medicine to treat cholecystitis, improve bile secretion, and regulate bile-duct pressure. The present study evaluated the estrogen-like effects of A. tabescens using a cell-proliferation assay in an estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer cell line (MCF-7). We found that the methanol extract of A. tabescens fruiting bodies promoted cell proliferation in MCF-7 cells. Using bioassay-guided fractionation of the methanol extract and chemical investigation, we isolated and identified four steroids and four fatty acids from the active fraction. All eight compounds were evaluated by E-screen assay for their estrogen-like effects in MCF-7 cells. Among the tested isolates, only (3β,5α,22E)-ergost-22-en-3-ol promoted cell proliferation in MCF-7 cells; this effect was mitigated by the ER antagonist, ICI 182,780. The mechanism underlying the estrogen-like effect of (3β,5α,22E)-ergost-22-en-3-ol was evaluated using Western blot analysis to detect the expression of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), Akt, and estrogen receptor α (ERα). We found that (3β,5α,22E)-ergost-22-en-3-ol induced an increase in phosphorylation of ERK, PI3K, Akt, and ERα. Together, these experimental results suggest that (3β,5α,22E)-ergost-22-en-3-ol is responsible for the estrogen-like effects of A. tabescens and may potentially aid control of estrogenic activity in menopause.

    Kurzfassung: Korean Disease Control and Prevention Agency launched Control and Prevention Community-based Registration and Management for Hypertension and Diabetes mellitus Project (CRMHDP) in Gwangmyeong city, 2009. This project has provided incentives on both patient and physician and has made private clinics and Public Health Center (PHC) in a community collaborate for effective chronic disease management among elderly people. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of CRMHDP on medication compliance and hospitalization due to diabetes-specific complications. The retrospective cohort study design was based on data of Korean National Health Insurance (KNHI) with 2 control areas (A & B) with usual primary care service similar to Gwangmyeong city regarding community health resources. The data on the study subjects were examined for the following 5 years since the baseline point. Medication adherence rates of CRMHDP-enrollees after the project was significantly higher than two control groups. For the hospitalization due to any complications, adjusted hazard ratio in the intervention group, compared to the control group A and B, were 0.76 (95% Confidence Interval: 0.65–0.78) and 0.52 (95% Confidence Interval 0.41–0.78), respectively. CRMHDP could successful in improving the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus among elderly people in South Korean primary care settings.

    Kurzfassung: Background: Patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis have an increased risk of lung cancer, followed by higher mortality in this population. Because the risk factors of lung cancer have not been well identified, this study aimed to investigate the risk factors of lung cancer in individuals with newly diagnosed bronchiectasis. Methods: This cohort study using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database identified 7425 individuals with incident bronchiectasis among those who participated in the health screening exam in 2009. The cohort was followed from baseline to the date of incident: lung cancer, death, or until the end of the study period. We investigated the risk factors of lung cancer in participants with bronchiectasis using the Cox–proportional hazard models. Results: During median 8.3 years of follow-up duration, 1.9% (138/7425) developed lung cancer. In multivariable analyses, significant factors associated with increased risk of incident lung cancer included: males (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] = 3.54, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.17–5.79) than females, the overweight (adjusted HR = 1.55, 95% CI = 1.03–2.35) than the normal weight, current smokers (adjusted HR = 3.10, 95% CI = 2.00–4.79) than never smokers, participants living in the rural area (adjusted HR = 2.54, 95% CI = 1.68–3.85) than those living in the metropolitan area. Among comorbidities, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was associated with an increased risk of lung cancer (adjusted HR = 1.46, 95% CI = 1.01–2.13) in participants with bronchiectasis. In contrast, mild alcohol consumption was associated with reduced risk of lung cancer (adjusted HR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.29–0.74) in those with bronchiectasis. Conclusion: This Korean population-based study showed that males, current smoking, overweight, living in rural areas, and comorbid chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are associated with increased risk of lung cancer in individuals with bronchiectasis.

    Kurzfassung: Venoms from venomous arthropods, including bees, typically induce an immediate local inflammatory response; however, how venoms acutely elicit inflammatory response and which components induce an inflammatory response remain unknown. Moreover, the presence of superoxide dismutase (SOD3) in venom and its functional link to the acute inflammatory response has not been determined to date. Here, we confirmed that SOD3 in bee venom (bvSOD3) acts as an inducer of H2O2 production to promote acute inflammatory responses. In mouse models, exogenous bvSOD3 rapidly induced H2O2 overproduction through superoxides that are endogenously produced by melittin and phospholipase A2, which then upregulated caspase-1 activation and proinflammatory molecule secretion and promoted an acute inflammatory response. We also showed that the relatively severe noxious effect of bvSOD3 elevated a type 2 immune response and bvSOD3 immunization protected against venom-induced inflammation. Our findings provide a novel view of the mechanism underlying bee venom-induced acute inflammation and offer a new approach to therapeutic treatments for bee envenoming and bee venom preparations for venom therapy/immunotherapy.
