    Notes: Abstract For the period September 1978 to December 1982 we have identified 55 solar flare particle events for which our instruments on board the ISEE-3 (ICE) spacecraft detected electrons above 10 MeV. Combining our data with those from the ULEWAT spectrometer (MPI Garching and University of Maryland) electron spectra in the range from 0.1 to 100 MeV were obtained. The observed spectral shapes can be divided into two classes. The spectra of the one class can be fit by a single power law in rigidity over the entire observed range. The spectra of the other class deviate from a power law, instead exhibiting a steepening at low rigidities and a flattening at high rigidities. Events with power-law spectra are associated with impulsive (<1 hr duration) soft X-ray emission, whereas events with hardening spectra are associated with long-duration (<1 hr) soft X-ray emission. The characteristics of long-duration events are consistent with diffusive shock acceleration taking place high in the corona. Electron spectra of short-duration flares are well reproduced by the distribution functions derived from a model assuming simultaneous second-order Fermi acceleration and Coulomb losses operating in closed flare loops.

    Notes: Summary DNA cytosine methylation and transcription of specific genes are inversely correlated. In granulocytic differentiation of HL-60 cells there is a distinct down regulation of the c-myc protooncogene expression, which is probably a causal mechanism. With differentiation of HL-60 cells we found no restriction enzyme fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) within the c-myc proto-oncogene, which indicates that there is no loss of regulatory elements (e.g., TATAA boxes within the first exon). Furthermore, we found no de novo methylation in this region. Methylation of other DNA regions, which could influence c-myc expression, is also not necessary for differentiation, as was shown by inhibition of DNA methylase. L-Ethionine and S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine are both potent inhibitors of DNA methylase and do not influence proliferation of HL-60 cells, as shown by FACS analysis.

    Notes: Abstract A diverse volcanic and plutonic rock suite was recovered from the center of the 80 km long ridge segment of the Southwest Indian Ridge (54°S, 7°16′ E) between the Islas Orcadas and Shaka Fracture Zones. The cumulus nature of the gabbroic rocks in the suite is indicated by phase, modal and cryptic layering, igneous lamination, and low incompatible element abundances. We present a mass-balance model for calculating the proportions and compositions of cumulus phases and crystallized intercumulus liquid from bulk-rock major element compositions. The model is based on the ability to define a compositional array of basaltic liquids and on the assumption that cumulus minerals are initially in equilibrium with trapped liquid. Calculated proportions of trapped liquid range from 3%–15%; values that are characteristic of adcumulates to mesocumulates. Models of postcumulus crystallization indicate significant enrichments of incompatible elements and buffering of compatible elements in residual trapped liquids, thus explaining the high TiO2 contents observed in magnesian clinopyroxenes. Cumulus phase assemblages and compositions suggest solidification in shallow level magma chambers, but disequilibrium plagioclase compositions suggest some crystallization at greater depth. Furthermore, basalt compositions projected onto the olivine-clinopyroxenequartz pseudoternary suggest magma generation over a range of pressures (from less than 10 to greater than 20 kb) as well as polybaric fractional crystallization. We suggest that the Southwest Indian Ridge is characterized by low magma supply with small batches of melt that either ascend directly to the surface having undergone limited polybaric crystallization or are trapped in shallow crustal magma chambers where they evolve and solidify to form cumulate gabbros. The adcumulus nature of the gabbros investigated here suggests slow cooling rates typical of large intrusions implying relatively large, but ephemeral magma chambers below segments of the Southwest Indian Ridge.

    Description: Petrological, geochemical, and geophysical gradients along the SE volcanic zone in Iceland imply systematic variations in melting and crystallization conditions and in magma supply and eruption rates. At the southern tip of the zone, in Vestmannaeyjar, alkali basalt magmas are generated by small degrees of melting under a thick lithosphere. Farther north, in the Hekla-Katla region, greater degrees of melting result in the generation of transitional basalt magmas. Magma supply rates exceed eruption rates, and melts begin to accumulate at the base of the crust, as indicated by magnetotelluric evidence. Uniform rare earth element patterns in the Hekla-Katla basalts may be explained by homogenization in the melt accumulation zone or by uniform melting conditions. Infrequent replenishment of magma reservoirs in this region leads to mixing of compositionally diverse magmas and, consequently, to basalts with diverse phenocryst compositions and textures. Even farther north, in central Iceland, the melting anomaly associated with the SE zone has developed to the same degree as it has beneath the SW axial rift zone, leading to similar magmatic conditions. High magma supply rates and low cooling rates inhibit fractionation and lead to the eruption of voluminous olivine tholeiites. In these areas a broad spectrum of melt compositions is generated by variable degrees of melting over a wide depth range. The compositional diversity, e.g., in large ion lithophile element enrichment, is masked somewhat by reequilibration and mixing of melts on ascent and in the melt accummulation zone. Compositional diversity may be preserved, however, in the melt accummulation zone in a lateral direction away from the rift axis since distal parts of the melt zone are fed only by melts segregating at greater depths. The variations in magmatic conditions along the SE zone, which are analogous to those inferred along propagating rifts, may be related to a mantle blob that ascended beneath central Iceland 2–3 m.y. ago, spread out laterally and triggered a southward propagating rift.
