Notes: Summary The clinical and biochemical characteristics of type III hyperlipoproteinemia are described in 64 patients (35 males and 29 females). Homozygosity for apolipoprotein E2, the presence of an abnormally cholesterol-rich very low density lipoprotein fraction (β-VLDL) and an elevated ratio of very low density lipoprotein cholesterol to plasma triglycerides (〉0.3; normal ratio about 0.2) were the basis for the diagnosis. Mean serum cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations at the first visit in the clinic were 426 ± 221 and 719 ±996 mg/dl, respectively. The mean age at diagnosis of the disorder was 49 years in males and 53 years in females. There was a high prevalence of obesity (72%), xanthomas (42%), and atherosclerosis (39%), especially peripheral vascular disease (31%). Early and correct diagnosis of this familial lipoprotein disorder seems necessary because of the prompt and beneficial response to therapeutic interventions.

Notes: Abstract We report the cloning of a cDNA and two corresponding β-globin genes of the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) as well as two genes for α-globins. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the cDNA shows that the predicted β-globin peptide comprises 148 amino acids with a calculated molecular mass of 16,127 Da and an overall amino acid similarity of 40–50% to higher vertebrates and 60–90% to fish sequences. The study of the genomic organization of α- and β-globin genes shows that, as is the case in Xenopus, the salmon genes are adjacent. Two sets of linked α- and β-globin genes were isolated and restriction-enzyme polymorphisms indicate that they belong to two distinct loci, possibly as a result of the salmon tetraploidy. In each locus the α- and β-globin genes are oriented 3′ to 3′ relative to each other with the RNA coding sequences located on opposite DNA strands. This is the first evidence for this type of arrangement found for globin genes. Moreover, while the linkage found in salmon and Xenopus supports the hypothesis of an initial tandem duplication of a globin ancestor gene, our results raise the question of the actual original orientation of the duplicated genes.

Notes: Summary In the cat caudate nucleus the same nine types of synapses are found as in putamen and fundus striati. The three parts of the striatum in the strict sense do not differ in the morphological differentiation of synapse types but only in their quantitative distribution. One-third of all synapses in the caudate nucleus are axo-spinous type IV synapses with a curved and divided asymmetric contact. This strongly suggests that the caudate nucleus interneuronal apparatus is dominated by centre-median input, in contrast to the putamen which is controlled by the cortico-striatal input to its internuncial cells and by its strong intrastriatal feedback mechanism. Extensive destruction of the convexity of the cortex and the medial cortex in one hemisphere results in dark degeneration of a large proportion of two of the nine types of caudate synapses: a) the axo-dendritic type VII synapses exciting the large aspiny caudate neurons and b) the axo-spinous type III synapses making contact with the small spiny neurons of the interneuronal cell apparatus.

Notes: Summary The cat putamen contains the identical nine types of synapses and the same proportion of axo-dendritic (or axo-somatic) synapses as described for the fundus striati. However, type III (cortico-striatal) (31∶16%) and type V (axon-collateral) (13∶1%) occur much more frequently and type I (nigro-striatal) much less frequently (14∶34%) in the putamen than in the fundus striati. Of the axo-spinous synapses only type IV, with densely arranged small round vesicles and interrupted, asymmetric contact, shows a dark degeneration after center median lesions, mainly in the parvocellular part. Of the six axo-dendritic (or axo-somatic) synapses, only type VII, with densely packed small round vesicles and asymmetric contact, is degenerated after the same lesion in the center median nucleus. However, after such lesions type VII synapses are much more frequently degenerated in the putamen than those of type IV.

Notes: Summary Three cases of fracture of the lumbar ring apophysis representing type I, II, and III are described in detail and the natural history of these fractures is discussed. The symptoms of apophyseal fractures are usually low back pain, sciatica, tension signs, and neurological deficits, thus imitating the symptoms of lumbar disc herniation. Plain radiography and magnetic resonance are often inconclusive and computed tomography is essential for the true diagnosis. An explanation of the different types of fractures, based on the osteogenesis of the human vertebra, is proposed. Recognition of these fractures is essential for proper planing of surgery, and apophyseal ring fractures must be suspected when children and young adults show signs of lumbar disc herniation.

Notes: The role of fine structure in reactions without barriers in the potential-energy surface is examined in general, and calculations are carried out for the specific case of O+OH→H+O2. The long-range Hamiltonian, including electrostatic (dipole–quadrupole and quadrupole–quadrupole) and spin-oribt interactions, is expressed in the asymptotic (separated species) basis for the 18 doubly degenerate states correlating to ground-state reactants O(3P2,1,0)+OH(2Π3/2,1/2). Adiabatic potential-energy surfaces are determined by diagonalization of the long-range Hamiltonian. The adiabaticity of the reaction has been analyzed using general considerations about nonadiabatic processes and confirmed by direct integration of the coupled equations. The half collision through the coupling region is found to be predominantly adiabatic for the state correlating to reaction. Single-surface reaction cross sections and rate constants have been obtained using the adiabatic capture, infinite-order sudden approximation method. Our results indicate that the reaction is probably fast even at very low temperatures. The effect of reagent rotation on the reaction cross section is also discussed.

Notes: Alpha and beta carotene, provitamin A activity, dehydroascorbic acid, L-ascorbic acid and total ascorbic acid content of “jalapeño,”“bell,” long green/red “chile,”“serrano” and “yellow wax” peppers (Cupsicum annuum L.) at green and red stages of maturity were determined by HPLC. Effects of thermal processing on vitamin A and C retention in “jalapeno” peppers was also determined. Provitamin A activity ranged from 27.3 to 501.9 Retinol Equivalents (RE/100g). Ascorbic acid concentration ranged from 76.1 to 243.1 (mg/100g). Provitamin A activity and ascorbic acid content increased with maturity in all cultivars. Thermal processing of “jalapeño” cultivars resulted in a 25% decrease of total provitamin A activity and a 75% decrease in total ascrobic acid.
