    Notizen: Abstract Allozyme variation in New World screwworm,Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), populations from Brazil was examined. Variability was observed in 8 of 13 enzyme loci and the frequency of the most common allele was 〈0.95 for seven loci. Observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.159 and 0.165, respectively. Comparisons of the Brazilian populations with previously studied populations from Costa Rica resulted in Nei's genetic distances of between 0.000 and 0.006, with the greatest distance being between populations within Brazil. Comparisons with Mexican populations using only three loci resulted in genetic distances ≤0.031. Goodness-of-fit statistics for Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and Wright'sF statistics indicated small deviations from expected equilibrium genotype frequencies and low levels of differentiation between populations within Brazil. Differentiation among screwworm populations from Brazil, Costa Rica, and Mexico was minimal.

    Notizen: Abstract The developmental effects of androgen play a central role in sexual differentiation of the mammalian central nervous system. The cellular mechanisms responsible for mediating these effects remain incompletely understood. A considerable amount of evidence has accumulated indicating that one of the earliest detectable events in the mechanism of sexual differentiation is a selective and permanent reduction in estrogen receptor concentrations in specific regions of the brain. Using quantitative autoradiographic methods, it has been possible to precisely map the regional distribution of estrogen receptors in the brains of male and female rats, as well as to study the development of sexual dimorphisms in receptor distribution. Despite previous data suggesting that the left and right sides of the brain may be differentially responsive to early androgen exposure, there is no significant right-left asymmetry in estrogen receptor distribution, in either sex. Significant sex differences in receptor density are, however, observed in several regions of the preoptic area, the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis and the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus, particularly in its most rostral and caudal aspects. In the periventricular preoptic area of the female, highest estrogen receptor density occurs in the anteroventral periventricular region: binding in this region is reduced by approximately 50% in the male, as compared to the female. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that androgen-induced defeminization of feminine behavioral and neuroendocrine responses to estrogen may involve selective reductions in the estrogen sensitivity of critical components of the neural circuitry regulating these responses, mediated in part through a reduction in estrogen receptor biosynthesis.

    Beschreibung: Porewater flow at cold seeps controls methane oxidation and carbonate precipitation rates, and also plays an important role in gas hydrate dynamics. We constrain the porewater flow rates in the upper sediment of Gulf of Mexico cold seeps by fitting measured 226Ra and Cl− profiles. The approach exploits their natural increase with depth through shallow sediments at non-brine (226Ra) and brine (Cl−) seeps. Vertical flow velocities at non-brine and brine seeps are found to be similar in magnitude, typically on the order of 0.1 m y−1. The accuracy of the flow estimates is assessed and shown to depend substantially on uncertainties in both concentrations and sediment tortuosity. Model simulations further reveal that the natural heterogeneity of sediment permeability can cause considerable lateral variability in vertical flow at the scale of a sediment core, which implies that the coring location and core size can have a substantial effect on the estimated porewater velocities. The formation of gas hydrates and calcium carbonates reduce sediment permeability, and decrease the spatial variability in flow over time, as the formation rates are higher along preferential flow paths. This analysis of the effect of spatiotemporal variability on chemical profiles improves the assessment of uncertainties in the estimated magnitude of flow, and is important for the evaluation of benthic-pelagic coupling at seeps.
