In:  Supplement to: Dittert, Nicolas; Corrin, Lydie; Diepenbroek, Michael; Grobe, Hannes; Heinze, Christoph; Ragueneau, Olivier (2002): Management of (pale-)oceanographic data sets using the PANGAEA information system: the SINOPS example. Computers & Geosciences, 28(7), 789-798, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0098-3004(01)00112-1

Description: During the SINOPS project, an optimal state of the art simulation of the marine silicon cycle is attempted employing a biogeochemical ocean general circulation model (BOGCM) through three particular time steps relevant for global (paleo-) climate. In order to tune the model optimally, results of the simulations are compared to a comprehensive data set of 'real' observations. SINOPS' scientific data management ensures that data structure becomes homogeneous throughout the project. Practical work routine comprises systematic progress from data acquisition, through preparation, processing, quality check and archiving, up to the presentation of data to the scientific community. Meta-information and analytical data are mapped by an n-dimensional catalogue in order to itemize the analytical value and to serve as an unambiguous identifier. In practice, data management is carried out by means of the online-accessible information system PANGAEA, which offers a tool set comprising a data warehouse, Graphical Information System (GIS), 2-D plot, cross-section plot, etc. and whose multidimensional data model promotes scientific data mining. Besides scientific and technical aspects, this alliance between scientific project team and data management crew serves to integrate the participants and allows them to gain mutual respect and appreciation.

Description: Data preparation for curation should not be optional and data citation should be part of any publication - these are the new norms (doi:10.1017/S0954102010000520).In the efforts to publish data and thus make it citable recently various new inventions were made. The Open Access publisher Copernicus has established a peer-reviewed journal which solely aims at making comprehensive data collections publicly available (http://earth-system-science-data.net). Publications must include a detailed description of methods and quality; mandatory is a stable link pointing to the data in a trusted archive through a persistent identifier (handle, Digital Object Identifier DOI).The stable linking of data through persistent identifiers necessitated the foundation of a registration agency for data-DOI. The international organisation DataCite was established in 2009 (http://www.datacite.org), a year later having nearly a million DOI registered.Consequently following the OECD recommendations for access to research data and the STM statement on data accessibility, publishers have recently started to archive data supplements to publications in external archives and to make it visible on the publications splash page through a linking via the DOI of the publication. Even for commercial journals, data are available in Open Access (example: doi:10.1016/j.margeo.2004.03.017).As an outcome of a project of the TIB (National Library for Science and Technology), some repositories now offer the opportunity to publish data citable with metadata and extended abstract through its data library system (example: doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.138789).

Description: Background and Aims: Complex and large-scale approaches in science like the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) or the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) must be complemented by an infrastructure assimilating and supplying reliable data and data products from widely spread sources in a timely and efficient way. For this purpose a service-oriented federated system is needed, building on and integrating all facilities that handle drilling-related data. Objective: A major task in scientific drilling is the capture of drilling and scientific data during and after an expedition and the long-term storage and dissemination of these data. Results: For IODP-Mission Specific Platform (MSP) expeditions a working database - the Drilling Information System (DIS) - is used, a system that is mobile, flexible and that can be deployed quickly on small- to medium-sized drilling platforms of opportunity, and which can also be deployed onshore in laboratories where the bulk of the scientific work is conducted. The long-term archive for the European Consortium for Research Drilling MSP-Expedition data is PANGAEA® - Publishing Network for Geoscientific & Environmental Data, which belongs to the ICSU World Data System. A general data portal, the Scientific Earth Drilling Information Service (SEDIS), is able to provide data from all IODP contributors.

Description: PANGAEA® - Publishing Network for Geoscientific and Environmental Data is a library for georeferenced data from the earth system, archived with related metainformation in a relational database and distributed via web services and accessible through various clients on the Internet. Data distribution and provision follows recent exchange standards as Dublin Core, OAI-PMH, XML and ISO19xxxx for the geoscientific metadata description. The content can be retrieved through library catalogs, search engines and portals. Data set descriptions include a bibliographic citation and are persistently identified using a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). A data warehouse functionality can be used to extract individual compilations from the inventory.PANGAEA is hosted by the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), Bremerhaven and the Center for Marine Environmental Sciences (MARUM), Bremen, Germany. The system is used by the World Data Center for Marine Environmental Sciences (WDC-MARE) as repository. Long-term archiving is assured through a contract with the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) and DataCite, the new international initiative to facilitate access to research data. Through a cooperation with the publisher Elsevier, data supplements in PANGAEA are automatically linked to publications in journals of the subject Earth and Planetary Sciences, served through ScienceDirect.

Description: PANGAEA® (Data Publisher for Earth & Life Sciences) is an information system which represents the ideal functioning of the ICSU World Data System. Storing about half a million data sets from all fields of geosciences it belongs to the largest archives for observational data. Standard conform interfaces (ISO, OGC, W3C, OAI) enable access from a variety of data and information portals, among them the search engine of PANGAEA® itself (www.pangaea.de) and e.g. large portals like Thomson Reuter’s Web of Knowledge and Google. All data sets in PANGAEA® are citable, fully documented, and can be referenced via persistent identifier (Digital Object Identifier - DOI) - a premise for data publication. Together with other ICSU World Data Centers and the Technical Information Library in Germany(TIB) PANGAEA® had a share in the implementation of a DOI based registry for scientific data, which by now is supported by a worldwide consortium of libraries (www.datacite.org). The long term goal is a "crossref for scientific data". Seeing the overall positive impact on the quality and availability of scientific data the PANGAEA® group is offering publication services since several years. They were the main initiators of the "Earth System Science Journal" at Copernicus (http://earth-system-science-data.net/), which is used for standalone peer reviewed data publications. A further milestone was building up strong co-operations with commercial publishers as Elsevier, Nature, Springer, Wiley, AGU, and others. A common web service allows to reference related data in PANGAEA® directly from an articles’ abstract page (e.g. ScienceDirect). The next step with commercial publishers is to further integrate the editorial process for the publication of related data with the publication procedures on the journal side, which practically means an extension of the peer review and a synchronization of editorial processes. In this presentation we will introduce the auditorium with the data publication workflow used by PANGAEA®, the technical background of the dynamic linking approach done between conventional publishers and the data repository, and the further steps for integrating editorial processes on both sides. PANGAEA® is operated as a joint long term facility by MARUM at the University Bremen and the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI). More than 80% of the funding results from project data management and the implementation of spatial data infrastructures (47 International, 46 European and 37 national projects since the last 12 years - www.pangaea.de/projects).
