    Notes: Plasma prostaglandin F (PGF) was measured by a radioimmunoassay method in 24 subjects with tumours of the female genital tract. Levels in the tumour group ranged from 25 pg/ml to 134 pg/ml and were almost all greater than the values observed in a control group of 41 healthy women who had a mean (±SD) level of 21 (±3.4) pg/ml. There was a relationship between plasma PGF levels and the stage of the disease. Patients with resectable tumours showed a fall in PGF levels postoperatively and those with disseminated malignancy demonstrated increasing levels as the disease progressed. Plasma PGF may provide a clinical prognostic marker in the management of patients with malignant tumours.

    Notes: Ninety patients, premedicated with temazepam 20 mg, undergoing suction termination of pregnancy, were studied. Forty patients received alfentanil (500 μ g), and thirty halothane (1.5%) as supplements to either etomidate or methohexitone–nitrous oxide–oxygen anaesthesia. A further 20 patients received alfentanil 250 μg at induction of anaesthesia with methohexitone, followed by a further 250 μg immediately prior to the onset of surgery. Recovery was assessed by the time patients took to open eyes on command, to giving their correct date of birth, and to performing the deletion test. Satisfactory operating conditions were not obtained with the combination of etomidate and halothane. Faster recovery was seen in patients with either etomidate or methohexitone and receiving alfentanil (p 〈 0.01) Testing by the ‘p’ deletion test showed impaired psychomotor performance at 30 minutes after cessation of anaesthesia in all groups compared with the pre-operative scores. Side effects leading to unsatisfactory anaesthesia were more frequent in patients who had received etomidate (p 〈0.01).

    Notes: Four out of 100 patients undergoing regional hip block (obturator nerve and nerve to obturator femoris) developed convulsions. These followed the injection of bupivacaine to block the nerve to the quadratus femoris muscle. The reasons for this are discussed. Not only has hip nerve regional blockade been shown to be ineffective in the relief of chronic pain of osteoarthritis but it must be concluded that the method described carries on unacceptably high morbidity.

    Notes: Intermolecular alkyl transfer occurs during field desorption of quaternary ammoniohexanoates, resulting in mass spectra containing structurally diagnostic adduct ions. Methyl, ethyl and propyl groups attached to nitrogen readily undergo intermolecular transfer to give [M+CH3]+, [M+C2H5]+ and [M+C3H7]+ ions, respectively. Evidence is presented that alkyl groups even as large as C10H21 can transfer intermolecularly at high emitter temperatures. In addition to the alkyl ion adducts, the field desorption spectra of \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ {\rm C}_{10} {\rm H}_{21} \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ + \left({{\rm CH}_3 } \right)_2 \left({{\rm CH}_2 } \right)_5 {\rm COO}^ - $\end{document} show several other adduct and fragment ions whose relative intensities depend strongly on emitter current.     Notes: The field desorption mass spectral behavior of several hydroxyammoniocarboxylates was studied at both low and high emitter heating currents. The molecular weights of these thermally unstable compounds can be determined directly from the low emitter current (〈10 mA) field desorption mass spectra, which are dominated by [xM+H]+ and [xM+H—CO2]+ ions (1≥x≥4). At higher emitter currents (∼20 mA), pyrolytic processes become important. These include intermolecular transfer of a single alkyl group yielding [M+alkyl]+ ions, intermolecular isomerization producing a hydroxyaminoester as the rearranged form of the molecule, and elimination of alcohol from the rearranged molecule, producing γ or δ lactones. The distribution of pyrolysis products does not depend significantly on the length of the carboxylate chain, but does appear to depend upon the chain length of the alkyl substituent on nitrogen. The spectra of molecules containing a long alkyl substituent (e.g. C14H29, C22H45) exhibit relatively high levels of [M+alkyl]+ ions, unlike the spectra of compounds which contain only methyl or ethyl substituents on the quaternary nitrogen. These latter compounds exhibit a relatively greater tendency toward lactone formation.

    Description: Ocean biological processes play an important role in the global carbon cycle via the production of organic matter and its subsequent export. Often, this flux is assumed to be in steady state; however, it is dependent on nutrients introduced to surface waters via multiple mechanisms, some of which are likely to exhibit both intra-annual and interannual variability leading to comparable variability in ocean carbon uptake. Here we test this variability using surface (5 m) inorganic nutrient concentrations from voluntary observing ships and satellite-derived estimates of chlorophyll and net primary production. At lower latitudes, the seasonality is small, and the monthly averages of nitrate:phosphate are lower than the canonical 16:1 Redfield ratio, implying nitrogen limitation, a situation confirmed via a series of nutrient limitation experiments conducted between Bermuda and Puerto Rico. The nutrient seasonal cycle is more pronounced at higher latitudes, with clear interannual variability. Over a large area of the midlatitude North Atlantic, the winters of 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 had nitrate values more than 1μmol L−1 higher than the 2002–2017 average, suggesting that during this period, the system may have shifted to phosphorus limitation. This nitrate increase meant that, in the region between 31◦ and 39◦ N, new production calculated from nitrate uptake was 20.5g C m−2 in 2010, more than four times higher than the median value of the whole observing period. Overall, we suggest that substantial variability in nutrient concentrations and biological carbon uptake occurs in the North Atlantic with interannual variability apparent over a number of different time scales.

    Description: Fecal pellets (FP) are a key component of the biological carbon pump, as they can, under some circumstances, efficiently transfer carbon to depth. Like other forms of particulate organic carbon (POC), they can be remineralized in the ocean interior (particularly in the upper 200 m), or alternatively they can be preserved in the sediments. The controls on the attenuation of FP flux with depth are not fully understood, in particular, the relative contributions of zooplankton fragmentation and microbial/zooplankton respiration to FP loss. Collection of sinking particles using Marine Snow Catchers at three ecologically contrasting sites in the Scotia Sea, Antarctica, revealed large differences in POC flux composition (5–96% FP) and flux attenuation despite similar temperatures. To determine the importance of microbial respiration on FP loss in the upper mesopelagic, we made the first ever measurements of small scale oxygen gradients through the boundary layer at the interface of krill FP collected from the Scotia Sea. Estimated carbon-specific respiration rates of microbes within FP (0.010–0.065 d−1) were too low to account for the observed large decreases in FP flux over the upper 200 m. Therefore, the observed rapid declines in downward FP flux in the upper mesopelagic are more likely to be caused by zooplankton, through coprophagy, coprorhexy, and coprochaly. Microbial respiration is likely to be more important in regions of higher temperatures, and at times of the year, or in depths of the ocean, where zooplankton abundances are low and therefore grazing and fragmentation processes are reduced.
