Notes: Several studies have suggested that reaction time (RT) may be related to variations in blood pressure which occur with each heart beat. This was tested in a series of four studies in which possible effects of the preparatory interval (PI) were controlled. Stimuli were presented at 0, 200, 400, and 600 msec following the R wave, and during the ascending slope of the R, T, and P waves of the cardiac cycle. No relationship was found in any of the four studies between RT and the phase within the cardiac cycle when the stimulus occurred.

Notes: The topographic distribution of the amplitudes of the contingent negative variation (CNV) recorded along the midline at the anterior, central, and posterior regions of the human scalp varied as a function of type of information processing demanded. A parietal-dominant CNV was found when active problem-solving behavior was required. A central-dominant CNV was evident in a disjunctive reaction time task. The results are interpreted as evidence supporting a model of cortical function which predicts shifts in cortical involvement as a function of type of task demands. A late positive component (LPC) of the average evoked potential was also found to vary as a function of stage of learning, recording sites, and an attitudinal dimension measured by Rotter's internal-external locus of control scale.

Notes: Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) has been estimated in 358 specimens of amniotic fluid from 221 pregnancies terminating in the delivery of a normal infant and in the amniotic fluid from 21 pregnancies in which the fetus turned out to have a neural tube defect. When the fetus had a neural tube defect, AFP levels before 36 weeks were raised above the 95th centile of normal controls with the exception of one patient in whom the fetus had a closed neural tube defect.

Notes: During a period of 76 months 252 intrauterine blood transfusions were performed on 166 out of 1600 fetuses in rhesus-immunized pregnancies. A standard transfusion technique was developed by a small obstetrical and radiological team, and the improved results associated with increasing experience are described. During the last two years the fetal transfusion rate in rhesus-immunized pregnancies reached 18 per cent, but it was only 13 per cent if patients transferred from other centres dealing with rhesus immunization are excluded. The immediate fetal mortality rate for the procedure was reduced to 12 per cent and the eventual perinatal survival rate was increased to 47 per cent during this final two-year period. Factors influencing the fetal and neonatal mortality are considered, and the maternal complications are described. The practical implications of the cord blood findings in babies born alive after single intrauterine transfusions are discussed, and the so-far satisfactory mental and physical development of surviving infants is noted.

Notes: Sodium aminohippurate (PAH) has largely replaced dyes in dilution techniques for estimating the volume of amniotic fluid. Until recently this method depended on a diazo reaction for the determination of PAH concentration. A simple and more rapid method, depending upon spectrophotometric measurement of the absorption peak of PAH at 272 nm, is now presented. At this wavelength the calibration graph of extinction against concentration of PAH is linear under the conditions described. To eliminate interference from protein absorption a pre-injection liquor sample is used for the preparation of a blank and a series of standards. All samples are measured at a concentration where solvent cut-off effects are minimized. Comparison of the results of the direct and the diazo methods showed good agreement.

Notes: A method is presented for the rapid separation of cell nuclei from the rabbit cerebral cortex into two populations. The first of these consists largely of nuclei with the morphological characteristics of neuronal nuclei, the second almost entirely of nuclei with the morphological characteristics of glial cell nuclei. From studies based upon sensitivity to the toxin α-amanitin, the ratio of incorporation of different bases, ionic requirements and differential sensitivity to actinomycin D, it is concluded that under both the classical low and high salt conditions described by other workers, two enzymes are active in RNA synthesis. The presence of a third enzyme of low activity cannot be excluded. No qualitative difference in the number of enzymes involved in RNA synthesis in neuronal and glial cell nuclei has been found, but there are quantitative differences in activity between the two nuclear populations.

Notes: Abstract— An assay system for the measurement of triphosphoinositide phosphodiesterase in homogenates of rat brain is described. With triphosphoinositide (TPI) as substrate, and in the presence of 0·1 m-KCI and saturating amounts of diethyl ether, the activity of phosphodiesterase in myelinated brain was 400–500 μmoles of TPI hydrolysed per g wet wt. per hr. One quarter of the adult level of the enzyme was present in rat brain one day after birth, with the remainder being added prior to and during the early stages of myelination. On subfractionation of brain homogenates, substantial activity of the enzyme was located in the soluble portion and in the paniculate fractions enriched in myelin and synaptosomes. The enzyme associated with the particulate fractions could not be detached from the membranes by any of several methods employed. There was a rough correlation between distribution of phosphodiesterase and that of 5′-nucleotidase, an enzyme associated with plasma membrane in a number of tissues. Some implications of the results are discussed.

Notes: The CNV was measured from 5 female and 5 male Ss during a pitch discrimination task with two levels of difficulty. It was found that females had larger CNVs during easy trials than during difficult trials. They also had larger CNVs for difficult trials in which they made incorrect judgments than for difficult trials in which they made correct judgments. The effect of difficulty and of correctness on the CNV is interpreted as a distraction phenomenon.

Notes: A patient with leucocytoclastic vasculitis, pyoderma gangrenosum, chronic pyelonephritis and a paraprotein of IgA type is described. The vasculitis responded favourably to dapsone therapy, while the pyoderma gangrenosum improved only when steroids were also given. During an exacerbation following withdrawal of dapsone, the serum IgG level fell early, but the β1c globulin level remained normal. Immunofluorescence studies on a vasculitic lesion showed granular deposits of IgG and β1c the walls of the blood vessels and a more extensive exudate of fibrin. Skin testing with bacterial antigens and patch testing to potassium iodide produced lesions which clinically, histologically and immunologically resembled the spontaneous vasculitic lesion.
