    Notizen: Ultrathin Pb films supported by Al film were made by using cold-rolling and ion-beam thinning techniques. The morphological instability of the Pb film under electron-beam irradiation was investigated by means of in situ transmission electron microscopy observations. It has been found that under electron-beam irradiation, Pb films with an incoherent Pb/Al interface spheroidized into Pb particles, but those with a semicoherent Pb/Al interface were stable in morphology. The morphological stability of thin films depends on the microstructure and the thermodynamic property of the interphase boundary. A critical interfacial energy for the spheroidization of thin films was determined based on a thermodynamics analysis. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Summary.  We reported a 51-year-old man who developed a severe haematuria with a prolonged prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT). Laboratory evaluation revealed the presence of specific factor V inhibitors. No underlying diseases and associated conditions have been identified. The patient improved after immunosuppressive therapy. However, the FV level remained low, indicating incomplete inhibitor eradication. The clinical course of our patient was consistent with the observations by others that FV inhibitor can be persistent for months or years.

    Notizen: A comparison of topographical and electrical properties of hydrogenated and oxidized high-quality B-doped homoepitaxial films was carried out by conductive atomic force microscopy. The topography images of both hydrogenated and oxidized films showed nanoscale flatness and uniformity. The hydrogenated film showed ohmic property indicating the existence of a high-conductivity layer on the surface. A reproducible periodical stripe pattern in the conductivity distribution was also observed indicating the imperfection of H-termination on the step edges. On the other hand, the oxidized surface showed Schottky I–V characteristics and a uniform conductivity distribution without structural dependence, although the surface morphology was modified after the current measurements. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We studied theoretically ballistic electronic transport in a proposed mesoscopic structure—quantum cable. Our results demonstrated that quantum cable is a unique structure for the study of mesoscopic transport. With the increasing Fermi energy of electrons, the ballistic conductance of quantum cable increases in a series of steps with different height. Besides the steps of one and two quantum conductance units (2e2/h), conductance steps of three and four quantum conductance units can be also expected due to the accidental degeneracies (crossings) of the transverse subbands of quantum cable. As one of the cable structure parameters is varied, the width of conductance plateaus varies in the nonmonotonous way, which arises from the nonmonotonic variation of the separation between the adjoining transverse subbands. In the weak coupling limit, the first two conductance plateaus are both of just one quantum conductance unit 2e2/h for the quantum cable structure of two cylindrical wires with similar thicknesses. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Intact skin represents the first line of defense against microbial pathogens. Effectors of innate immunity such as antimicrobial peptides are important when this barrier is breached due to infection or injury. Antimicrobial peptides can kill microbes directly, however several investigations have suggested they can also modify host cell behaviors to promote wound repair. It is unclear whether the ability of these molecules to positively influence wound repair is dependent on their antimicrobial function or on their ability to influence the host. To investigate this, the microbial killing capacity of specific antimicrobial peptide fragments was determined and compared with their ability to affect wound repair in a murine model of aseptic full-thickness excisional injury. HB-107, a peptide fragment derived from Cecropin B, lacks antimicrobial activity yet showed up to 64% improvement in wound closure at day13 when compared to either scrambled peptide or vehicle controls. This effect was comparable to that seen after treatment with currently accepted therapy. Histological evaluation of wounds treated with HB-107 displayed keratinocyte hyperplasia and increased leukocyte infiltration compared to controls. To explore the mechanism for these findings, we tested the ability of HB-107 to stimulate IL-8 secretion. HB-107 peptide was able to stimulate IL-8 release from cultured dermal microvascular endothelial cells when compared to scrambled peptide control or other peptides derived from Cecropin B. Taken together, this data confirms that antimicrobial peptides can function as important effectors of wound repair independent of antimicrobial function.

    Notizen: Eclogites from the south Tianshan, NW China are grouped into two types: glaucophane and hornblende eclogites, composed, respectively, of garnet + omphacite + glaucophane + paragonite + epidote + quartz and garnet + omphacite + hornblende (sensu lato) + paragonite + epidote + quartz, plus accessory rutile and ilmenite. These eclogites are diverse both in mineral composition and texture not only between the two types but also among the different selected samples within the glaucophane eclogite. Using thermocalc 3.1 and recent models of activity–composition relation for minerals, a P–T projection and a series of P–T pseudosections for specific samples of eclogite have been calculated in the system Na2O–CaO–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O (NCFMASH) with quartz and water taken to be in excess. On the basis of these phase diagrams, the phase relations and P–T conditions are well delineated. The three selected samples of glaucophane eclogite AK05, AK11 and AK17 are estimated to have peak P–T conditions, respectively, of 540–550 °C at c. 16 kbar, c. 560 °C at 15–17 kbar and c. 580 °C at 15–19 kbar, and two samples of hornblende eclogite AK10 and AK30 of 610–630 °C and 17–18 kbar. Together with H2O-content contours in the related P–T pseudosections and textural relations, both types of eclogite are inferred to show clockwise P–T paths, with the hornblende eclogite being transformed from the glaucophane eclogite assemblage dominantly through increasing temperature.

    Notizen: The solid-state reaction magnesite (MgCO3) + calcite (aragonite) (CaCO3) = dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2) has been identified in metapelites from western Tianshan, China. Petrological studies show that two metamorphic stages are recorded in the metapelites: (1) the peak mineral assemblage of magnesite and calcite pseudomorphs after aragonite which is only preserved as inclusions within dolomite; and (2) the retrograde glaucophane-chloritoid facies mineral assemblage of glaucophane, chloritoid, dolomite, garnet, paragonite, chlorite and quartz. The peak metamorphic temperatures and pressures are calculated to be 560–600 °C, 4.95–5.07 GPa based on the calcite–dolomite geothermometer and the equilibrium calculation of the reaction dolomite = magnesite + aragonite, respectively. These give direct evidence in UHP metamorphic rocks from Tianshan, China, that carbonate sediments were subducted to greater than 150 km depth. This UHP metamorphism represents a geotherm lower than any previously estimated for subduction metamorphism (〈 3.7 °C km−1) and is within what was previously considered a ‘forbidden’ condition within Earth. In terms of the carbon cycle, this demonstrates that carbonate sediments can be subducted to at least 150 km depth without releasing significant CO2 to the overlying mantle wedge.

    Notizen: Single-crystalline Bi nanowires with diameters ranging from 20 to 70 nm were prepared by electrodeposition using nanoporous aluminum oxide membranes rather than the more usual track-etched polycarbonate membranes. X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction investigations revealed that the nanowires are essentially single crystalline and highly oriented. The temperature dependence of zero-field resistance of different diameter nanowires indicated that these Bi nanowires undergo a semimetal–semiconductor transition due to two-dimensional quantum confinement effects. The resistance maximum was observed at 50 K in zero magnetic field for 20 nm Bi nanowires, while the resistance minimum at 258 K for 50 nm Bi nanowires, due to the quantum size effect. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We observed a violation of the normal Raman selection rule in the resonant Raman spectra of interface (IF) phonon modes of the ultrathin (GaAs)4/(AlAs)2 superlattice. Contrary to the prediction of conventional theories, all four IF modes were observed in both (XX) and (XY) geometries. The result can be interpreted as a consequence of the deep penetration of the electron wave function in the GaAs wells into the AlAs barriers and a lack of definite parity of the electron wave function. Furthermore, our result indicates that conventional theory for bulk (thicker) systems may need to be modified and further developed to be applicable to ultrathin systems. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Stripes of vertically aligned carbon nanofibers (VACNFs) have been used to form membranes for size selectively controlling the transport of latex beads. Fluidic structures were created in poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and interfaced to the VACNF structures for characterization of the membrane pore size. Solutions of fluorescently labeled latex beads were introduced into the PDMS channels and characterized by fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy. Results show that the beads size selectively pass through the nanofiber barriers and the size restriction limit correlates with the interfiber spacing. The results suggest that altering VACNF array density can alter fractionation properties of the membrane. Such membranes may be useful for molecular sorting and for mimicking the properties of natural membranes. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
