Description: Escape Volcano is a new scientific game that, through a path made of boxes, allows children andteenagers to question themselves and learn about issues related to the Earth Sciences and the risksassociated. The game is the brainchild of the INGV researchers of Rome who designed it, in close collaborationwith students from two thirdyear classes at the “Primo Levi” Scientific High School in Rome, as partof the Alternanza Scuola Lavoro (hereafter ASL) project “Life as a Researcher”; this educationalludicsociety game deals, with the basic knowledge of volcanoes and earthquakes, providing ideas for themitigation of the risks associated with them, with purpose of environmental protection. In thefollowing will be illustrate the different phases that led the transformation of the original idea in toa project, as well as the realization of the “Prototype 00” carried out in the laboratories of the INGV.During the planning phase, the game was designed for boys of secondary school. The results obtained during this test phase, that was carried out for a year in various scientific events, allowed gathering excellent hints, in the terms of scientific content and rules. These advices permittedto improve the game fluidity and made it accessible for players of all ages, as well as for childrenwith different types of disabilities that necessitate special attention.

Description: One of the primary activities of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology; INGV) is the production of resources concerning educational and outreach projects in geophysics and natural hazard topics. This activity is aimed at transferring, periodically, results at the forefront of ongoing research to the public through an intense and comprehensive plan for scientific dissemination. Over the past 15 years, graphic and visual communication have become essential tools for supporting institutional and research activities. In this paper, we describe successful INGV team experiences resulting from a close relationship and collaborative work between graphic designers and research scientists. The main goal of the projects devoted to the general public, through the creation of a museum exhibition or the production of descriptive brochures, is to support scientists in conveying their message and making concepts fruitful, easier to understand but also fully enjoyable thanks to the emotional involvement that images may generate. Through a careful composition of signs and images, and through the use of different visual tools (colours, form and lettering) on different media (print, video and web), the graphics and editorial products together create a strong INGV-style identity, making it easily recognizable in any educational and outreach project. A full project product package might include a logo or other artwork, organized text and pure design elements such as shapes and colours, which serve the purpose of unifying the whole set. Colour is used not only to help the project logo to stand out from the international overview but, in our case, also to generate a unifying return across all INGV sections. A recent and highly stimulating experience concerned the creation of edu-games, specifically designed for scientific dissemination, through a close collaboration between INGV graphic designers and their reference scientific community. The edu-games were designed as an effective combination of educational content and playful communicative aspects, leading the young players to learn while having fun.

Description: “10 years with planet Earth” is the title of the calendar created for primary schools, realized in 2016 by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), the Italian Institute of Geophysical Research. The calendar is the outcome of a project created to support and complement 15 years of dissemination activities with schools. Each year for 10 years, we have printed calendars that represented different subjects related to a world in constant evolution. Each year we have launched a calendar competition among schools, asking children to send in drawings related to the chosen theme. The aim was to stimulate interest in learning about Earth sciences and the dynamics of planet Earth, as well as to raise awareness of water resources availability, the prevention of natural disasters and planet sustainability. We have received about 10 000 drawings from students of more than 400 schools. For each yearly competition, we have chosen the most significant drawings and we have included them in the calendar. The creators of the drawings were awarded by scientists, journalists, artists, science communicators and even by a government minister. In addition to the competition, the drawings reflect impressions and thoughts and illustrate the children's point of view. From the images, one can feel great sensitivity, consideration, responsiveness and respect for the planet as well as positive feelings towards science.

Description: The game we propose here is called “Escape Volcano” and aims to teach the basic notions about volcanoes and different kind of eruptions. It is intended for middle and high school students. The game has been realized with some high school students in the frame of Alternanza Scuola Lavoro project. The visual impact of the game and its own actions in the dynamics of play allows the students to improve easily the knowledge of complex concepts, refining the abstract thought e developing solutions. The game, in general, can be see also as occasion to improve relationship between students. The game is not only evasion and entertainment but a way to know each other and confront themselves. In particular, this game is composed by a plastic billboard (160*200cm2), that represents a volcano with its magmatic chambers, four plastic pawns, one dice and four deck of cards. The game is for teams of 2/4 players. The aim of the game is to reach the crater, starting from the magmatic chamber, before the volcano erupts. Each player can try to reach the top jumping from the magmatic chamber to the minor chambers, answering the questions reported in the cards. There are four different types of cards, each corresponding to a die face:Tabù, mime, multiple answer and draw cards. The dice has two more faces: the BOMB, which forcesthe team go back one chamber, and the X2, which means the team has to answer two more questionsbefore moving to the next chamber. However, the way out is not so simple to reach, there are many insidious traps along the way! The game has been presented in some public meetings and has been very successful.

Description: Earth Science study has been considered marginal especially in Italy in which environmental calamities occurred frequently. The purpose of this work is to improve the acknowledgement of the Earth in order to achieve the correct risk perception in the children aged between 3 and 5 years old. The experience has been conducted on 15 classes for a number of more than 300 children in schools of Rome. Theoretical-practical laboratories on volcanoes have been carried out in order to diffuse the bases of the Earth Science. To improve the comprehension of this young age children the new strategies included readjustment of techniques already used for 6 years old children. The laboratories have been achieved using food and natural stuff. Volcanoes laboratories are made by building two volcanoes modeling sand around plastic bottles. The effusive eruption is made by inserting flour and bicarbonate powder in the bottle and the vinegar as reactant. The explosive is made by only inserting bicarbonate and vinegar and using a cork to plug the bottle. Before and after the laboratory, questionnaire skills were administered to the children, while only after laboratories different questionnaire were administered to teachers. Results obtained from children questionnaires show how volcanic laboratory improve the acknowledgement to the correct volcanic risk perception especially during the explosive simulation. The teachers questionnaire took over the importance of an expert doing these laboratories. S03.10

Description: The reasearch community has the responsibility to shering knowledge about environmental concern and technological innovations with the aim to increase the awarness in people about the protection of the environment and the human specie. The Laboratorio per le Tecnologie Marine di Porto Venere starting the outreach activity in 2010 with the aim to disseminate toward schools and general public the marine environmet value, the great problems that affecting it and the activities that the research community take every day to face these topics [Merlino et al., 2014]. Researchers use a lot of outreach instruments to reach the same objective: capture people interest! One of the best way is to involve society in a active paths, stimulating them emotions and personal thinks. In detail, during the years were been organized: didactical laboratories, workshops, conferences, dissemination events, work related learning projects, citizen sciences projects, educational games (Fig. 1) [Locritani et al., 2017], documentaries, … In the last year the collaboration with the Unità Funzionale Sistemi Integrati per le Infrastrutture Ambientali Marine (INGV) and with the Laboratorio di Divulgazione Scientifica e Attività Museali (INGV) in the framework of ENVRIplus Project (H2020 n. 654182), allowed us to enlarge the audience to the european context. Our role in the project was been to implement an e-learning platform (Fig. 2) to teachers [D’Addezio, 2018a] and students and to implement the contents of a multimedial educational game (ENVRgame). Moreover, specific questionnaires was been implemented and used to avaluate, during the years and different projects [Locritani et al., 2019; D’Addezio et al., 2018b, Locritani et al., 2015], the effect of the outreach events in the involving people or students. Some results highligh that younger students are are most receptive then the older ones.

Description: Geophysics is the application of the laws and techniques of physics to disclose knowledge about the Earth’s dynamic processes and subsurface structure. It explores phenomena such as earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis to improve our understanding of the Earth’s physical processes. Effective mitigation of risks from catastrophic geophysics hazards requires knowledge and understanding of natural processes. Scientific divulgation deals with the communication of knowledge previously produced in scientific contexts to a non-expert massive audience. One of the difficulties science divulgators need to overcome is to explain specific concepts, even complex, from a given discipline in a language simple and understandable, maintaining scientific correctness, and enhance skills, knowledge and competences of their interlocutors. Considering that, nowadays, digital technologies play a large role in young people’s lives and games are directly connected to the life of adolescents, we realized an educational videogame to teach geophysics and Earth sciences to low and high-school students; an educational computer game, serious game, where electronic medium with all the characteristic of a gaming environment convey formative outcomes. The starting point is that technologies are systems of open possibilities that can be effectively integrated with innovative methods of education necessary to promote more effective, efficient, attractive and durable learning. In fact, the ardour and enthusiasm that digital games evoke in teenagers has brought many researchers, school leaders and teachers to the question “how video games” can be used to engage young people and support their learning. A first stage of the project of Virtual Reality, "Journey inside the volcano", were presented at several scientific divulgative events, such as the ESA Living Planet Symposium, The National Geographic Festival delle Scienze, the September 29th INGV Open Day, involving more that a thousand users and receiving appreciation from the public. We present the serious game and the relate appreciation analysis based on guestbook comments compiled at the end of the experience. The comments reveal a great level of appreciation, involvements and emotions, and margins of improvement. The results foster us to improve the project developing other geophysical topics.
