    Notes: We describe a technique to create very small semiconductor nanostructures, with sizes far beyond the limit of conventional optical lithography processes, by the use self-assembling diblock copolymers as nanolithographic masks. Quantum structures with very high aspect ratio of 1:10 were fabricated by dry etching. In a first step, so-called diblock copolymer micelles were generated in a toluene solution. These micelles were loaded by a noble-metal salt. After dipping a substrate into this solution, a monolayer of ordered micelles is generated, covering almost the complete surface. After treatment in a hydrogen plasma all of the organic components are removed and only crystalline metal clusters of (approximate)12 nm size remain. This metal cluster mask can be used directly in a chlorine dry etching process to etch cylinders in GaAs and its alloys of In and Al. It is also possible to etch through a quantum well layer underneath the surface in order to produce quantum dots. The resulting nanostructures were investigated by scanning force microscopy, by high resolution transmission electron microscopy, and also by low temperature photoluminescence spectroscopy. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Five days after implantation with 11-ketotestosterone (KT) female Lythrypnus dalli exhibited elevated urinary KT levels and male-like genital papilla morphology. Papilla length increased, width decreased, and length : width ratio increased. Control fish exhibited increases in papilla length, and length : width ratio on day 3, but not on day 5. Changes in the total area of the papilla were not statistically significant. It is suggested that KT mediates genital papilla morphology rapidly and thus may be a useful indicator of circulating KT in L. dalli.

    Notes: Kudzu [Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi.], a vigorous, perennial warm-season legume, grows widely throughout the south-eastern United States, predominantly as a volunteer species. It is tolerant of drought and acidic, infertile soils and may have potential as a low-input forage for livestock. A field experiment was undertaken to determine the effects of cutting date and frequency on yield and nutritive value of kudzu (20-year-old stand with no fertilizer or lime inputs) in central Georgia. The cutting treatments included an uncut control, and plots cut once (September), twice (July and September), and three times (June, July, and September) during the 1994 growing season. Dry matter (DM) production and forage quality were determined for total herbage, leaf and stem tissues from quadrat samples taken on all plots in June, July, September, and November (after a killing frost) in 1994, and in June, 1995. Total herbage and leaf DM production was highest for the three-harvest system and lowest in the no-cut control plots in 1994, but these results were reversed in the harvest made in 1995. Total herbage production and crude protein concentrations were similar in kudzu cut in the initial summer harvest (either June, July, or September) during the first year. Whole plant and stem in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) in these samples declined throughout the growing season, while leaf IVDMD was unchanged until the first frost. Kudzu has the potential to be a low-input forage for livestock, particularly as supplemental drought feed, or as a protein bank for summer or autumn grazing.

    Notes: Abstract. A seed coat-specific gene, SCS1 (Seed Coat Subtilisin 1), from soybean, Glycine max [L.] Merill, has been identified and studied. The gene belongs to a small family of genes with sequence similarity to the subtilisins, which are serine proteases. Northern blot analysis showed that SCS1 RNA accumulates to maximal levels in seed coats at 12 days post anthesis, preceding the final stages of seed coat differentiation. The SCS1 RNA was not found in other tissues including embryos, seed pods, flowers, stems, roots or leaves. In-situ hybridization studies confirmed the temporal pattern of expression observed by Northern blot analysis and further revealed a restricted pattern of RNA accumulation in thick-walled parenchyma cells of the seed coats. These cells are important in the apoplastic translocation of nutrients en route to the embryo from the vascular tissues. The tissue-specific subtilisin-like gene may be required for regulating the differentiation of the thick-walled parenchyma cells.

    Description: Remote sensing of night light emissions in the visible band offers a unique opportunity to directly observe human activity from space. This has allowed a host of applications including mapping urban areas, estimating population and GDP, monitoring disasters and conflicts. More recently, remotely sensed night lights data have found use in understanding the environmental impacts of light emissions (light pollution), including their impacts on human health. In this review, we outline the historical development of night-time optical sensors up to the current state of the art sensors, highlight various applications of night light data, discuss the special challenges associated with remote sensing of night lights with a focus on the limitations of current sensors, and provide an outlook for the future of remote sensing of night lights. While the paper mainly focuses on space borne remote sensing, ground based sensing of night-time brightness for studies on astronomical and ecological light pollution, as well as for calibration and validation of space borne data, are also discussed. Although the development of night light sensors lags behind day-time sensors, we demonstrate that the field is in a stage of rapid development. The worldwide transition to LED lights poses a particular challenge for remote sensing of night lights, and strongly highlights the need for a new generation of space borne night lights instruments. This work shows that future sensors are needed to monitor temporal changes during the night (for example from a geostationary platform or constellation of satellites), and to better understand the angular patterns of light emission (roughly analogous to the BRDF in daylight sensing). Perhaps most importantly, we make the case that higher spatial resolution and multispectral sensors covering the range from blue to NIR are needed to more effectively identify lighting technologies, map urban functions, and monitor energy use.

    Description: Constraining Earth’s sediment mass balance over geologic time requires a quantitative understanding of how landscapes respond to transient tectonic perturbations. However, the mechanisms by which bedrock lithology governs landscape response remain poorly understood. Rock type influences the size of sediment delivered to river channels, which controls how efficiently rivers respond to tectonic forcing. The Mendocino triple junction region of northern California, USA, is one landscape in which large boulders, delivered by hillslope failures to channels, may alter the pace of landscape response to a pulse of rock uplift. Boulders frequently delivered by earthflows in one lithology, the Franciscan mélange, have been hypothesized to steepen channels and slow river response to rock uplift, helping to preserve high-elevation, low-relief topography. Channels in other units (the Coastal Belt and the Franciscan schist) may experience little or no erosion inhibition due to boulder delivery. Here we investigate spatial patterns in channel steepness, an indicator of erosion resistance, and how it varies between mélange and non-mélange channels. We then ask whether lithologically controlled boulder delivery to rivers is a possible cause of steepness variations. We find that mélange channels are steeper than Coastal Belt channels but not steeper than schist channels. Though channels in all units steepen with increasing proximity to mapped hillslope failures, absolute steepness values near failures are much higher (∼2×) in the mélange and schist than in Coastal Belt units. This could reflect reduced rock erodibility or increased erosion rates in the mélange and schist, or disproportionate steepening due to enhanced boulder delivery by hillslope failures in those units. To investigate the possible influence of lithology-dependent boulder delivery, we map boulders at failure toes in the three units. We find that boulder size, frequency, and concentration are greatest in mélange channels and that Coastal Belt channels have the lowest concentrations. Using our field data to parameterize a mathematical model for channel slope response to boulder delivery, we find that the modeled influence of boulders in the mélange could be strong enough to account for some observed differences in channel steepness between lithologies. At the landscape scale, we lack the data to fully disentangle boulder-induced steepening from that due to spatially varying erosion rates and in situ rock erodibility. However, our boulder mapping and modeling results suggest that lithology-dependent boulder delivery to channels could retard landscape adjustment to tectonic forcing in the mélange and potentially also in the schist. Boulder delivery may modulate landscape response to tectonics and help preserve high-elevation, low-relief topography at the Mendocino triple junction and elsewhere.

    Description: In geodynamically active areas, spatio-temporal variations in rock uplift can provide key insights into the processes responsible for the evolution of topography. The Central Anatolian Plateau (CAP) southern margin experienced a rapid rock-uplift pulse with maximum rates of 3.5 m/kyr during the Quaternary, based on marine sediments dated to the middle Pleistocene that are now located at 1500 m.a.s.l. Fluvial landscapes record elements that reflect temporal and spatial variations in rock-uplift rates, such as the normalized river steepness index, which is affected by rock-uplift rate, the erodibility of the underlying rock, and climate. Following the calibration of river profiles for an erosion coefficient value, which can be done using independent data (in our case, uplifted marine terraces and dated marine sediments), river profiles can be inverted for the rock-uplift histories that created them. Here, we demonstrate how it is possible to define the spatio-temporal rock-uplift history of the CAP southern margin by quantitative analysis of river profiles.
