Description: Research and regulations must be integrated to protect seafloor biota from future mining impacts Summary: As human use of rare metals has diversified and risen with global development, metal ore deposits from the deep ocean floor are increasingly seen as an attractive future resource. Japan recently completed the first successful test for zinc extraction from the deep seabed, and the number of seafloor exploration licenses filed at the International Seabed Authority (ISA) has tripled in the past 5 years. Seafloor-mining equipment is being tested, and industrial-scale production in national waters could start in a few years. We call for integrated scientific studies of global metal resources, the fluxes and fates of metal uses, and the ecological footprints of mining on land and in the sea, to critically assess the risks of deep-sea mining and the chances for alternative technologies. Given the increasing scientific evidence for long-lasting impacts of mining on the abyssal environment, precautionary regulations for commercial deep-sea mining are essential to protect marine ecosystems and their biodiversity.

Description: This data compilation includes geochemical data on the solid and solute phases of the seafloor sediments in the DISCOL area in the Peru basin (South Pacific). The DISCOL area represents a part of the deep sea that is extensively covered with manganese nodules and represents a unique study area, where in 1989 a circular area with a diameter of about 2 nautical miles was intensely disturbed with a plough-harrow. The presented data was collected during the two legs of the SO242 research cruise in 2015 with the aim to better understand the ecological impacts of deep-sea seafloor disturbances (e.g. through nodule mining operations). Several devices were deployed at each sampling site to retrieve surface and subsurface sediment samples: (i) a Oktopus multiple-corer (MUC), which samples the upper 20 – 40 cm of the sediment including the overlying bottom water; The corer was equipped with a TV-Camera system for precise positioning, e.g. for sampling specific seafloor features like the disturbance tracks; (ii) a ROV-deployed push-corer (PUC) focusing on small-scale topographic features created by the seafloor disturbance; (iii) a box-corer (BC - USNEL Spade Corer) to sample the sediment inclusive macrofauna as well as associated nodules; and (iv) a gravity-corer (GC) extracting sediment up to 10 mbsf.

Description: This dataset comprises porosity data from undisturbed reference sites sampled by a multiple corer (MUC) and disturbed push-cores (PUC), which were retrieved using the ROV Kiel 6000 (GEOMAR) during RV SONNE expedition SO239 in 2015. During this cruise, different European contract areas for the exploration of polymetallic nodules in the area of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) were visited (BGR, IOM, GSR, IFREMER), which are currently being explored in light of potential future deep-sea mining. The PUCs were taken in several small-scale disturbance tracks, which were created 1 day to 37 years before sampling for the simulation of deep-sea mining activities in the different exploration areas. The sampled disturbance tracks include 1-day- and 3-year-old EBS tracks (created with an Epibenthic sledge), 8-months- and 37-year-old dredge tracks, and a 20-year-old track from the Benthic Impact Experiment in the IOM area (IOM-BIE). The dataset was produces in the laboratories of the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) Bremerhaven, Germany.
