Description: The Aurora hydrothermal system, Arctic Ocean, hosts active submarine venting within an extensive field of relict mineral deposits. Here we show the site is associated with a neovolcanic mound located within the Gakkel Ridge rift-valley floor, but deep-tow camera and sidescan surveys reveal the site to be ≥100 m across—unusually large for a volcanically hosted vent on a slow-spreading ridge and more comparable to tectonically hosted systems that require large time-integrated heat-fluxes to form. The hydrothermal plume emanating from Aurora exhibits much higher dissolved CH〈jats:sub〉4〈/jats:sub〉/Mn values than typical basalt-hosted hydrothermal systems and, instead, closely resembles those of high-temperature ultramafic-influenced vents at slow-spreading ridges. We hypothesize that deep-penetrating fluid circulation may have sustained the prolonged venting evident at the Aurora hydrothermal field with a hydrothermal convection cell that can access ultramafic lithologies underlying anomalously thin ocean crust at this ultraslow spreading ridge setting. Our findings have implications for ultra-slow ridge cooling, global marine mineral distributions, and the diversity of geologic settings that can host abiotic organic synthesis - pertinent to the search for life beyond Earth.

Description: Upper-ocean current velocities were measured along the track of the cruise SO283 (19 March — 25 May 2021) using a vessel-mounted acoustic current Doppler profiler (ADCP). The instrument was a Teledyne RD Instruments 38-kHz Ocean Surveyor, with the transducer was installed 6.5 m below the waterline. The instrument was operated in narrowband mode to achieve the maximum possible range. Velocity data were recorded in 55 32-m bins. The navigational data, as well as heading, pitch and roll data, were recorded together with the velocity measurements by the data acquisition software (VmDAS). The velocity data were converted into earth coordinates and averaged into one-minute intervals. A water track calibration was used to determine misalignment angle (0.199°) and amplitude factor (1.007). The accuracy of the velocity data varies, and depends on the number of available good pings in each depth cell during one measurements interval.

Description: Upper-ocean current velocities were measured along the track of the cruise SO283 (19 March — 25 May 2021) using a vessel-mounted acoustic current Doppler profiler (ADCP). The instrument was a Teledyne RD Instruments 75-kHz Ocean Surveyor, with the transducer was installed 6.5 m below the waterline. The instrument was operated in narrowband mode to achieve the maximum possible range. Velocity data were recorded in 100 8-m bins. The navigational data, as well as heading, pitch and roll data, were recorded together with the velocity measurements by the data acquisition software (VmDAS). The velocity data were converted into earth coordinates and averaged into one-minute intervals. A water track calibration was used to determine misalignment angle (-0.746°) and amplitude factor (1.002). The accuracy of the velocity data varies, and depends on the number of available good pings in each depth cell during one measurements interval.

Description: During Sonne cruise SO283 in the western South Atlantic (19 March - 25 May, 2021) conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) measurements were made out using a SeaBird 9+ instrument equipped with dual sensors for temperature, conductivity and oxygen, as well as Wetlabs fluorescence and turbidity sensors. Calibration for conductivity and oxygen was performed at sea using water samples. The CTD data were reprocessed with the corrections applied. After filtering the alignment of the different sensors in the TC-duct was corrected, the standard pressure and temperature correction was applied and loops are removed using the standard Seabird algorithms. Downcast data were separated and averaged over 0.5 dB intervals.

Description: During RV MARIA S. MERIAN cruise MSM85 in the subpolar North Atlantic and the Greenland Sea (23 July - 13 August, 2019) conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) measurements were made using a SeaBird 9+ CTD equipped with sensors for temperature, conductivity, and oxygen, as well as a Seapoint turbidity sensor and a WET labs fluorometer. A total number of 160 CTD casts were carried out, while crossing the East Greenland Shelf and the East Greenland Current. The stations were organized into eight sections, which covered the Irminger, Iceland and Greenland Sea as well as the Denmark Strait. Three additional stations were made across the entrance of the Greenlandic fjord Scoresby Sound (Kangertittivaq).
