Description: Sediment depth age-models, stable carbon isotope data, and radiocarbon data are reported for a suite of sediment cores from Iberian- and Brazil Margins, in the Atlantic basin. The sediment sequences span the last deglaciation (~30,000 years to the present). Stable carbon isotopes were measured on the benthic foraminifer species Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi, in the Godwin Laboratory, University of Cambridge. Each measurement was run on 1-4 individuals with a combined mass of 50-180μg. Samples were reacted with orthophosphoric acid (100%) and analysed, in comparison with a reference gas, using a dual inlet Thermo MAT 253 mass spectrometer connected to a Kiel device. Radiocarbon dates were obtained on monospecific samples of planktonic foraminifera, Globigerinoides ruber (Brazil Margin) or Globigerina bulloides (Iberian Margin), and samples of mixed benthic foraminifera (excluding agglutinated species) picked from the 〉150μm size-fraction. Samples were graphitized in the Godwin Radiocarbon Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, using a standard hydrogen/iron catalyst reduction method. AMS-14C dates were subsequently measured at the 14Chrono Centre, Queens University Belfast. All dates are reported as 'conventional radiocarbon ages', without additional 'corrections' applied. Reservoir ages and radiocarbon ventilation ages are derived based on the sediment core chronologies, and reported as offsets between contemporary marine- and atmospheric radiocarbon ages (based on the 'Intcal13' atmospheric radiocarbon calibration curve).

Description: The Portuguese Margin has been a prime location for investigating millennial-scale variability, where analyses of palaeoceanographic and terrestrial proxies from the same samples in marine sequences allow an in situ assessment of the relative timing of changes. Here, we investigate changes in ocean conditions and hydroclimate in the MIS 3 section of the interval 35-57 ka in core MD01-2444. Core location and study interval: Core MD01-2444 (37°33.68'N; 10°08.53'W; 2637 m water depth; 27.45 m in length) was recovered in 2001, using the CALYPSO Giant Piston corer aboard the French research vessel Marion Dufresne II. Here, we report data from the 9-13.67 m section in MD01-2444 (~35-57 ka).

Description: Foraminiferal magnesium to calcium ratios (Mg/Ca) are reported for two benthic species, drawn from down-core marine sediment samples obtained from the deep Southern Ocean. Samples of 4-10 individual benthic foraminifera, of the species Globobulimina affinis and/or Uvigerina sp., were oxidatively cleaned according to a standard protocol, involving clay/detrital material removal, methanol rinses, buffered oxidation of organic matter, weak acid leaching, and deionised water rinses, followed by visual inspection of the remaining calcite fragments. After dissolution, samples were analysed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The analytical internal reproducibility is better than 2%. The efficiency of cleaning to remove external contaminant phases was screened on the basis of Fe/Ca ratios, which here remain below 0.05 mmol/mol.

Description: Planktonic foraminifera (G. bulloides) oxygen isotopes: Measurements of foraminiferal stable isotopes were carried out in the Godwin Laboratory for Palaeoclimate Research (University of Cambridge), using a VG SIRA mass spectrometer. Analyses were made on samples consisting of 30 specimens of G. bulloides in the 300-355 mm size fraction, picked by M.J. Mleneck-Vautravers. Results are reported with reference to the international standard VPDB and the precision is better than ±0.08‰ for d18O. Age model: The age model was developed by aligning the abrupt transitions of d18O record of G. bulloides in core MD01-2444 to warming and cooling events in the NGRIP d18Oice record, presented on: (i) the GICC05 timescale [Svensson, A. et al. A 60,000 year Greenland stratigraphic ice core chronology. Clim. Past 4, 47–57 (2008)]; and (ii) the WD2014: modified timescale, whereby NGRIP GICC05 ice ages 31.2–67.2 ka are multiplied by 1.0063. [Buizert, C. et al. The WAIS Divide deep ice core WD2014 chronology – Part 1: Methane synchronization (68–31 ka BP) and the gas age–ice age difference. Clim. Past 11, 153-173 (2015)].
