    Abstract: Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a weak anesthetic gas that was first used in 1844 in the field of dental anesthesia. However, currently, N2O is being abused for entertainment purposes in the form of N2O-filled balloons, called funky balls, which can cause many adverse effects, especially nervous system injury. This study aimed to investigate the detailed clinical and subclinical features associated with N2O intoxication. We retrospectively reviewed 47 patients diagnosed with N2O intoxication, from May 2018 to July 2019, and collected demographic data, clinical and laboratory tests, and spinal cord magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. The mean time of funky ball use was 8.8 months, with a mean use of 36.3 balls per day. All patients presented with superficial sensory disorders. Reductions in muscle strength, decreased vibration sensation, and decreased or lost tendon reflexes were the most common clinical signs of N2O intoxication. Romberg sign and Lhermitte sign were observed in 39 patients (83%) and 21 patients (44.7%), respectively. Spinal cord lesions on MRI were observed in 32 patients (68.1%), which mostly presented with an inverted V sign. The total duration of N2O use, the number of days of using N2O per week, and the presence of Lhermitte sign (P 〈 0.05) were significantly different between patients with and without spinal cord lesions on MRI. Serum levels of homocysteine and vitamin B12 were significantly different between the time of admission and discharge (P 〈 0.05). Our study indicated that the days of using N2O per week was significantly associated with Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI) on MRI. According to the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, a cutoff days of using per week value of 2.5 days could predict SCI with a sensitivity of 81.3%, a specificity of 73.3%, and an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.813. Changes in the serum levels of homocysteine and vitamin B12 were effective markers for the evaluation of treatment response.

    Abstract: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as one of the ten major threats to global health. Advances in technology, including whole-genome sequencing, have provided new insights into the origin and mechanisms of AMR. However, our understanding of the short-term impact of antimicrobial pressure and resistance on the physiology of bacterial populations is limited. We aimed to investigate morphological and physiological responses of clinical isolates of E. coli under short-term exposure to key antimicrobials. We performed whole-genome sequencing on twenty-seven E. coli isolates isolated from children with sepsis to evaluate their AMR gene content. We assessed their antimicrobial susceptibility profile and measured their growth dynamics and morphological characteristics under exposure to varying concentrations of ciprofloxacin, ceftriaxone, tetracycline, gentamicin, and azithromycin. AMR was common, with all organisms resistant to at least one antimicrobial; a total of 81.5% were multi-drug-resistant (MDR). We observed an association between resistance profile and morphological characteristics of the E. coli over a three-hour exposure to antimicrobials. Growth dynamics experiments demonstrated that resistance to tetracycline promoted the growth of E. coli under antimicrobial-free conditions, while resistance to the other antimicrobials incurred a fitness cost. Notably, antimicrobial exposure heterogeneously suppressed bacterial growth, but sub-MIC concentrations of azithromycin increased the maximum growth rate of the clinical isolates. Our results outline complex interactions between organism and antimicrobials and raise clinical concerns regarding exposure of sub-MIC concentrations of specific antimicrobials.

    Abstract: Sb anion-substituted gallium nitride films were fabricated by radio frequency reactive sputtering with single Sb-containing cermet targets with different Sb contents under Ar/N2 atmosphere. n-type GaN films with electron concentration of (1.40 ± 0.1) × 1017 cm−3 inverted to p-type Sb-GaN with hole concentration of (5.50 ± 0.3) × 1017 cm−3. The bandgap energy of Sb anion-added Sb-GaN films decreased from 3.20 to 2.72 eV with increasing Sb concentration. The formation of p-type Sb-GaN is attributed to the formation of Ga vacancy at higher Sb concentration. The coexistence of Sb at the Ga cation site and N anion site is an interesting and important result, as GaNSb had been well developed for highly mismatched alloys. The hetero-junction with p-type Sb-GaN/n-Si diodes was all formed by radio frequency (RF) reactive sputtering technology. The electrical characteristics of Sb-GaN diode devices were investigated from −20 to 20 V at room temperature (RT).

    Abstract: The implementation of the sliding mode control (SMC) for load frequency control of power networks becomes difficult due to the chattering phenomenon of high-frequency switching. This chattering problem in SMC is extremely dangerous for actuators used in power systems. In this paper, a continuous control strategy by combining a second-order mode and integral siding surface is proposed as a possible solution to this problem. The proposed second-order integral sliding mode control (SOISMC) law not only rejects chattering phenomenon in control input, but also guarantees the robustness of the multi-area power network, which has an effect on parametric uncertainties such as the load variations and the matched or mismatched parameter uncertainties. Moreover, the reporting of the simulation indicates that the proposed controller upholds the quality requirement by controlling with operating conditions in the larger range, rejects disturbance, reduces the transient response of frequency, eliminates the overshoot problem, and can better address load uncertainties compared to several previous control methods. The simulation results also show that the proposed SOISMC can be used for practical multi-area power network to lessen high parameter uncertainties and load disturbances.

    Abstract: An attempt to degrade volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and sterilize air simultaneously is highly desirable to improve indoor air quality. With the help of deep ultraviolet (UVC) lighting, harmful bacteria that exists in the air can be destroyed. Thus, a new photocatalytic substance that can break down VOCs under UVC irradiation is required. Here, we demonstrate the photocatalytic activity of β-Ga2O3 nanostructures, synthesized via the solvothermal method for removing formaldehyde (HCHO) under deep ultraviolet irradiation. The Raman and XRD results indicated that as-synthesized nanostructures showed β-crystalline phase with a monoclinic structure. The photoluminescence spectrum exhibited a broad and strong green emission peak at 510 nm, which was likely attributed to a considerable amount of oxygen and gallium vacancies formed during the calcinating process. The photocatalytic efficiency for decomposing HCHO at room temperature under deep ultraviolet irradiation (278 nm) of the synthesized β-Ga2O3 nanoparticles is higher than that of the β-Ga2O3 nanorods. Both nanoparticles and nanorods obeyed the pseudo-first-order Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model with a degradation rate constant of 0.057 and 0.033 min−1, corresponding to the efficiency of 82% and 62% in the formaldehyde removal, respectively.

    Abstract: The use of nano-additives is widely recognized as a cheap and effective pathway to improve the performance of lubrication by minimizing the energy loss from friction and wear, especially in diesel engines. In this work, a simple and scalable protocol was proposed to fabricate a graphene additive to improve the engine lubricant oil. Graphene nanoplates (GNPs) were obtained by a one-step chemical exfoliation of natural graphite and were successfully modified with a surfactant and an organic compound to obtain a modified GNP additive, that can be facilely dispersed in lubricant oil. The GNPs and modified GNP additive were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The prepared GNPs had wrinkled and crumpled structures with a diameter of 10–30 µm and a thickness of less than 15 nm. After modification, the GNP surfaces were uniformly covered with the organic compound. The addition of the modified GNP additive to the engine lubricant oil significantly enhanced the friction and antiwear performance. The highest reduction of 35% was determined for the wear scar diameter with a GNP additive concentration of approximately 0.05%. The mechanism for lubrication enhancement by graphene additives was also briefly discussed.

    Abstract: Youths and adolescents are vulnerable to HIV/STIs from unprotected sex. Promotion of young population’s awareness about risky sexual behaviors is essential to develop contextualized interventions. A cross-sectional study was conducted in five Vietnamese provinces to document current attitudes and practices regarding sexual behaviors among youths. The information on sociodemographic characteristics, substance use, and sexual behaviors was collected via self-reported questionnaires. The factors associated with risky sexual behaviors were identified by the multivariate logistic regression. Among the 1200 participants, 73.5% reported having sex in their lifetime, and 48.1% used condoms at their latest sexual intercourse. Participants in urban areas were more likely not to intend to use condoms and had a higher unintended pregnancy rate than in rural areas. Older age was positively associated with not wanting to use and not using condoms. Substance-using participants were more likely to not use condoms. The participants taking alcohol or other stimulants before sex had a higher likelihood of unintended pregnancy. Respondents’ attitudes and practices regarding sexual behaviors were associated with gender and employment. This study indicated that young population’s awareness in Vietnam is high, however, risky sexual behaviors also remain common. Sex-related educational programs about the consequences of substance use, multiple sex partners, and unprotected sex should be developed.

    Abstract: The study investigates the collapse probability of a cabinet facility with a tuned mass damper (TMD) subjected to high- and low-frequency earthquakes. For this aim, a prototype of the cabinet in Korea is utilized for the numeric simulation. The accuracy of the finite element model is evaluated via the impact hammer tests. To mitigate the seismic response of the structure, a TMD system is developed whose properties are designed based on the outcomes from the modal analysis (i.e., modal frequencies and mode shapes). Furthermore, the influences of earthquake frequency contents on the seismic response are evaluated. The numeric analyses are conducted using a series of eighty earthquakes that are classified into two groups corresponding to low- and high-frequency motions. Finally, fragility curves are developed for the cabinet subjected to different ground motion sets. The results quantify the seismic vulnerability of the structure and demonstrate the influences of earthquake frequency contents and the vibration control system on the seismic response of the cabinet.

    Abstract: We theoretically investigate the plasmonic properties of mid-infrared graphene-based metamaterials and apply deep learning of a neural network for the inverse design. These artificial structures have square periodic arrays of graphene plasmonic resonators deposited on dielectric thin films. Optical spectra vary significantly with changes in structural parameters. To validate our theoretical approach, we carry out finite difference time domain simulations and compare computational results with theoretical calculations. Quantitatively good agreements among theoretical predictions, simulations, and previous experiments allow us to employ this proposed theoretical model to generate reliable data for training and testing deep neural networks. By merging the pre-trained neural network with the inverse network, we implement calculations for inverse design of the graphene-based metameterials. We also discuss the limitation of the data-driven approach.

    Abstract: Axial bearing capacity of piles is the most important parameter in pile foundation design. In this paper, artificial neural network (ANN) and random forest (RF) algorithms were utilized to predict the ultimate axial bearing capacity of driven piles. An unprecedented database containing 2314 driven pile static load test reports were gathered, including the pile diameter, length of pile segments, natural ground elevation, pile top elevation, guide pile segment stop driving elevation, pile tip elevation, average standard penetration test (SPT) value along the embedded length of pile, and average SPT blow counts at the tip of pile as input variables, whereas the ultimate load on pile top was considered as output variable. The dataset was divided into the training (70%) and testing (30%) parts for the construction and validation phases, respectively. Various error criteria, namely mean absolute error (MAE), root mean squared error (RMSE), and the coefficient of determination (R2) were used to evaluate the performance of RF and ANN algorithms. In addition, the predicted results of pile load tests were compared with five empirical equations derived from the literature and with classical multi-variable regression. The results showed that RF outperformed ANN and other methods. Sensitivity analysis was conducted to reveal that the average SPT value and pile tip elevation were the most important factors in predicting the axial bearing capacity of piles.
