Description: In three Holocene high-resolution sediment cores from the Nordic Seas, the Barents Sea continental margin and eastern Fram Strait, we established narrow-spaced 14C records of various planktic foraminifera species to reconstruct local variations in the reservoir age of surface and subsurface waters. In the two northern cores Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sin.) (Nps) shows a distinct Early Holocene 14C plateau at 9.3 to 9.1 14C ka, that we tuned to an atmospheric 14C plateau near 9.0 to 8.7 14C ka (IntCal 2013) that extends from 10.2 to 9.6 calendar ka. The outlined difference in (average) 14C age suggests a reservoir age of ∼400 years for the subsurface dweller Nps. Different planktic foraminifers that inhabit different water masses document different reservoir ages. In contrast to Nps the near-surface dweller N. incompta reveals an average reservoir age of 150 years, however, a further near-surface dweller, Turborotalita quinqueloba, a local Early Holocene reservoir age of up to 720 years at the Barents Sea continental margin. The latter age may indicate a local admixture of old and less saline Arctic surface waters from the East Spitsbergen Current. The Early Holocene 14C plateau forms a robust basis for a better correlation of paleoceanographic signals in all three sediment cores. For example, the onset of a maximum in T. quinqueloba that marks the onset of the Early Holocene Thermal Maximum in the Arctic Gateway is now defined near 10.5 cal ka, an event that possibly reflects an enhanced advection of Atlantic surface waters up to the Arctic Ocean.

    Publication Date: 2023-01-13
Description: Upwelling intensity in the South China Sea has changed over glacial-interglacial cycles in response to orbital-scale changes in the East Asian Monsoon. Here, we evaluate new multi-proxy records of two sediment cores from the north-eastern South China Sea to uncover millennial-scale changes in winter monsoondriven upwelling over glacial Terminations I and II. On the basis of U/Th-based speleothem chronology, we compare these changes with sediment records of summer monsoondriven upwelling east of South Vietnam. Ocean upwelling is traced by reduced (UK'37-based) temperature and increased nutrient and productivity estimates of sea surface water (d13C on planktic foraminifera, accumulation rates of alkenones, chlorins, and total organic carbon). Accordingly, strong winter upwelling occurred north-west of Luzon (Philippines) during late Marine Isotope Stage 6.2, Heinrich (HS) and Greenland stadials (GS) HS-11, GS-26, GS-25, HS-1, and the Younger Dryas. During these stadials, summer upwelling decreased off South Vietnam and sea surface salinity reached a maximum suggesting a drop in monsoon rains, concurrent with speleothem records of aridity in China. In harmony with a stadial-to-interstadial see-saw pattern, winter upwelling off Luzon in turn was weak during interstadials, in particular those of glacial Terminations I and II, when summer upwelling culminated east of South Vietnam. Most likely, this upwelling terminated widespread deep-water stratification, coeval with the deglacial rise in atmospheric CO2. Yet, a synchronous maximum in precipitation fostered estuarine overturning circulation in the South China Sea, in particular as long as the Borneo Strait was closed when sea level dropped below -40 m.

Description: Modeling studies predict that changes in radiocarbon (14C) reservoir ages of surface waters during the last deglacial episode will reflect changes in both atmospheric 14C concentration and ocean circulation including the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. Tests of these models require the availability of accurate 14C reservoir ages in well-dated late Quaternary time series. We here test two models using plateau-tuned 14C time series in multiple well-placed sediment core age-depth sequences throughout the lower latitudes of the Atlantic Ocean. 14C age plateau tuning in glacial and deglacial sequences provides accurate calendar year ages that differ by as much as 500-2500 years from those based on assumed global reservoir ages around 400 years. This study demonstrates increases in local Atlantic surface reservoir ages of up to 1000 years during the Last Glacial Maximum, ages that reflect stronger trades off Benguela and summer winds off southern Brazil. By contrast, surface water reservoir ages remained close to zero in the Cariaco Basin in the southern Caribbean due to lagoon-style isolation and persistently strong atmospheric CO2 exchange. Later, during the early deglacial (16 ka) reservoir ages decreased to a minimum of 170-420 14C years throughout the South Atlantic, likely in response to the rapid rise in atmospheric pCO2 and Antarctic temperatures occurring then. Changes in magnitude and geographic distribution of 14C reservoir ages of peak glacial and deglacial surface waters deviate from the results of Franke et al. (2008) but are generally consistent with those of the more advanced ocean circulation model of Butzin et al. (2012).
