Notes: The refractive index of CdTe was determined from interference maxima in the transparency region from 10 to 295 K. Parameters in a four-oscillator model were fitted to experimental data and an empirical formula for the refractive index is given. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The Hall mobility of electrons μH is measured in CdTe in the temperature interval 450–1050 °C and defined Cd overpressure in near-intrinsic conditions. The strong decrease of μH above 600 °C is reported. The effect is explained within a model of multivalley conduction where both electrons in Γ1c minimum and in L1c minima participate. The theoretical description is based on the solution of the Boltzmann transport equation within the relaxation time approximation including the polar and acoustic phonon intravalley and intervalley scatterings. The Γ1c to L1c separation ΔE=0.29−10−4T (eV) for the effective mass in the L valley mL=0.35m0 is found to best fit the experimental data. Such ΔE is about four times smaller than it is predicted by first-principle calculations. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Carbon-doped oxide materials (SiCOH films) with ultralow dielectric constants have been prepared by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) from mixtures of SiCOH precursors with organic materials. The films have been characterized by Rutherford backscattering and forward recoil elastic scattering analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and index of refraction measurements, and measurement of step heights in the films. The electrical properties of the films have been measured on metal–insulator–silicon structures. By proper choice of the precursor and deposition conditions, the dielectric constants of the SiCOH films can be reduced to values below 2.1, demonstrating the extendibility of PECVD-prepared carbon-doped oxides as the interconnect dielectrics for future generation of very large scale integrated chips. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An overview of gaseous ion/surface collisions is presented, with special emphasis on the behavior of polyatomic projectile ions at hyperthermal collision energies (1–100 eV) and the instrumentation needed for such studies. The inelastic and reactive processes occurring during ion/surface collisions are described in terms of several archetypes, viz., elastic and quasielastic scattering, chemical sputtering leading to release of surface material, inelastic scattering leading to surface-induced dissociation (SID) of the projectile, ion/surface reactions, and soft landing. Parameters that are important in ion/surface interactions are discussed, including the interaction time, the conversion of translational to internal energy, the translational energies of the scattered ions, the effects of scattering angle, and the influence of the nature of the surface. Different types of tandem mass spectrometers, built specifically to study ion/surface collision phenomena, are discussed and the advantages and disadvantages of the individual designs are compared. The role of SID as a technique in bioanalytical mass spectrometry is illustrated and this inelastic collision experiment is compared and contrasted with gas-phase collision-induced dissociation, the standard method of tandem mass spectrometry. Special emphasis is placed on reactive scattering including the use of ion/surface reactions for surface chemical analysis and for surface chemical modification. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
