Notizen: We have observed that stress-induced leakage currents (SILC) in thin gate oxides (4.5 nm) could be reduced by applying a low gate bias to the oxides after stress, regardless of the polarity of the applied gate bias. The reduction of SILC increased with the applied gate bias and began to saturate after 105 s. In addition, the reduction of SILC was significantly enhanced in a hydrogen ambient, suggesting a strong link between the reduction of SILC and trapped-hole annealing. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Background: We report a case of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) in a 17-year-old male student caused by Fusarium napiforme found in his home environment. Methods: The patient was diagnosed according to history, chest radiograph, spirometry, high-resolution chest CT, and transbronchial lung biopsy. To identify the causative agent, cultured aeromolds were collected by the open-plate method. From the main fungi cultured, fungal antigens were prepared, and immunoblot analysis with the patient's serum and each fungal antigen was performed. Results: Five fungal species were isolated from the patient's home. Immunoblotting analysis with the patient's serum demonstrated more than 10 IgG-binding fractions to F. napiforme extract only, while little binding was noted with the other fungal antigens. Conclusions: We should be aware that HP may be caused by F. napiforme in the home environment.

Notizen: Abstract Highly oil-absorbent polyurethane foam (PUF) materials were obtained by polymerizing polyether polyol mixture and carbodiimide-modified d-methyl diisocyanate in a weight ratio of 10:2. The foam materials were prepared to contain inorganic nutrients (slow-release fertilizer; SRF) and oil-degrading yeast cells, Yarrowia lipolytica 180, to be applied for removal of oil films on surface waters through absorption and biodegradation after oil spills. PUFs absorbed 7–9 times their own weight of Arabian light crude oil and the oil absorbency appeared to improve as the ratio of surface area to foam weight increased. PUFs showed excellent floatability which was maintained for more than 6 months in sea water, and less than 5% of the absorbed oil was released when the foams were left on water for more than 10 days. For immobilization of yeast cells into PUFs, various immobilization techniques were tested to compare their oil degrading ability and the maintenance thereof. All immobilized cells showed oil degrading abilities as good as those of free cells immediately after the preparation of PUFs, however, the activity of chitin-immobilized cells remained at a high level for the longest period of preservation. The high efficiency of oil absorption and oil degradation by PUF-immobilized yeast cells suggested that PUF-immobilized cells have a high potential as a bioremediation technique for the treatment of oil films on surface waters.

Notizen: Abstract  Background: Bone formation within the hydroxyapatite implant has been reported in explanted spheres in humans. Bone-specific differentiation was observed to occur earlier in the pores of spherical hydroxyapatite implants enhanced with osteogenin within the rabbit socket. We observed previously unreported bone marrow formation in a coralline hydroxyapatite implant placed into the rabbit orbit after evisceration. Methods: One eye of each of 10 New Zealand white rabbits weighing between 2 and 3 kg was eviscerated and implanted with hydroxyapatite spheres. The explanted hydroxyapatite spheres 20 weeks after surgery were examined under the microscope. Results: Histopathologic examination of the excised implants showed the presence of trabeculae of mature bone with fatty marrow and hematopoietic elements. Scattered throughout the fatty tissue were bone marrow elements consisting of precursors of the granulocytic and erythroid series and also megakaryocytes. Conclusion: The osseous metaplasia with functioning bone marrow was incidentally observed in the coralline hydroxyapatite implant without the addition of any osteogenesis-inducing agents.

Notizen: Abstract Oil biodegradation in oil-contaminated sand was simultaneously measured by respirometric and thin-layer chromatography/flame ionization detector (TLC/FID) methods. Degradation rate of 10–32 mg-C kg sand−1 day was achieved by amending the sand with inorganic nutrients and an oil-degrading yeast. The amendment also increased the initial CO2 production rate by 5–15 folds, which was not detected by the TLC/FID analysis. However, it was possible to monitor the accumulation of resin/asphaltene fraction up to 130% by the TLC/FID analysis during the oil degradation.

Notizen: Abstract A noise performance design method for the pre-amplifiers of an active neural probe is given. The on-chip circuitry of the active neural probe consists of CMOS devices that show high-/ low-frequency noise, so that the device noise can become dominant. Analysis of the signal-to-device-noise ratio (SDNR) for the CMOS source follower buffer and two-stage differential voltage amplifier is given. Closed-form expressions for the output noise power are derived and exploited to tailor the parameters that are controllable during circuit design. The output SDNR is calculated considering the real extracellular action potentials, the electrode-electrolyte interface and the noise spectrum of CMOS devices from typical foundries. It is shown that the output device noise power can be much higher than the output signal power if the devices at the input stage of the pre-amplifier are made as small as given fabrication technology permits. Quantitative information of the circuit parameters to achieve an SDNR higher than 5 for neural spikes with 60μV amplitude are provided for both preamplifier types.
