Notes: Periodicity fluctuations of layer thickness and composition in a superlattice not only decrease the intensity, they also broaden the width of the satellite peaks in the x-ray diffraction pattern. In this letter, we develop a method that is dependent on the width of satellite peaks to assess periodicity fluctuations of a superlattice quickly. A linear relation of the magnitude of fluctuations, peak width and peak order has been derived from x-ray diffraction kinematical theory. By means of this method, periodicity fluctuations in strained (GaNAs)1(GaAs)m superlattices grown on GaAs substrates by molecular beam epitaxy have been studied. Distinct satellite peaks indicate that the superlattices are of high quality. The N composition of 0.25 and its fluctuation of 20% in a strained GaNxAs1−x monolayer are obtained from simulations of the measured diffraction pattern. The x-ray simulations and in situ observation results of reflection high-energy electron diffraction are in good agreement. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract. Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) is a syndrome characterized by familial predisposition to colorectal carcinoma and extracolonic cancers of the gastrointestinal, urological, and female reproductive tracts. This dominant disorder is caused by germline defects in one of at least five DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes: hMLH1, hMSH2, hPMS1, hPMS2, and hMSH6 (GTBP). Germline mutations of hMSH2 and hMLH1 are also frequently identified in families not fulfilling all the Amsterdam criteria, thereby demonstrating that the involvement of these genes is not confined to typical HNPCC. To evaluate the respective involvement of the various MMR genes in typical and incomplete HNPCC syndromes, we have performed an analysis of the hMLH1, hMSH2, hPMS1, hPMS2, and hMSH6 genes in a large series of French kindreds (n=75) with colorectal tumors and/or aggregation of extracolonic cancers belonging to the HNPCC spectrum. Mutational analysis has been performed in all families, without preselection for the tumor phenotype. We have detected 26 pathogenic germline mutations of the hMLH1 and hMSH2 genes and several novel variants of the hPMS1, hPMS2, and hMSH6 genes. Our data confirm that, regardless of the type of families and the tumor phenotype, hPMS1, hPMS2, and hMSH6 germline mutations are rare in familial aggregation of colorectal cancers. Furthermore, they suggest that the presence of multiple primary malignancies in a single individual and the observation of extracolonic tumors in relatives of a colorectal cancer patient should be included among the guidelines for referring patients for genetic testing.

Notes: Abstract Experiments were performed to determine the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics in the entrance and fully developed regions of tubes with internal wave-like longitudinal fins. The test tube has a double-pipe structure, with the inner tube as an insertion. The wave-like fins are in the annulus and span its full width. Experiments were conducted for two cases: one with the inner tube blocked (no air flowing through it) and the other with the inner tube unblocked. The outer tube was electrically heated. Local and average heat transfer coefficients and friction factors were measured. The friction factor and Nusselt number correlations in the fully developed region were obtained in the Reynolds number range of 9×102 to 3.5×103. It has been found that the wave-like fins enhance heat transfer significantly with the blocked case being superior. In addition, the in-tube heat transfer process is characterized by an earlier transition from laminar to turbulent flow and Reynolds number-dependent thermal entrance length.

Notes: Abstract In our invention, FCC (fluid catalytic cracking) dry gas could be used to react with benzene without any special purification, and more than 90% ethylene was converted to ethylbenzene. The phenomenon of carbon deposition over catalyst surface was obvious and leads to a deactivation of catalyst, so it is important to study the behavior of carbon deposition of catalyst during alkylation of benzene. The influence of several factors such as temperature, reaction time, reactant concentration of the amount and the kinetics of carbon deposition were investigated, during which carbon depositing rate equations were obtained for different reactant.

Notes: Abstract The combustion behavior of Shuangya Mountain (SYM) coal dust has been investigated by means of TG in this paper. The reaction fraction α can be obtained from isothermal TG data. The regressions of g(α), an integral function of α vs. t for different reaction mechanisms were performed. The mechanism of nucleation and nuclei growth is determined as the controlling step of the coal dust combustion reaction by the correlation coefficient of the regression, and the kinetic equation of the SYM coal dust combustion reaction has been established.

Notes: Summary Two types of particleboards bonded with an isocyanate resin, one with uniform vertical density profile (homo-profile), and the other with conventional U-shaped profile, were fabricated to various density levels using lauan (Shorea spp.) particles. The fundamental relationships between the density profile and the board properties were determined, and the results are summarized as follows: 1. In homo-profile boards, the moduli of rupture (MOR) and elasticity (MOE), internal bond (IB) strength, and screw withdrawal resistance (SWR), are highly correlated to the board mean density. 2. The bottom limit of the board density is estimated to be ca. 0.25 g/cm3, based on the correlation regressions between mechanical properties and mean density. 3. At equal mean density level, the MOR and MOE of the conventional particleboards are higher than the homo-profile boards, due to the higher density near the faces. However, the reverse is true for IB, owing to the presence of the low density core in the former. 4. The net impact of peak density on MOR and MOE is greater at higher mean density level while raising the core density results in more pronounced improvement in IB at lower density. 5. In addition to the compaction ratio, the dimensional stability of the board is also affected by the peak area and mat moisture content.

Notes: Abstract A novel method for the determination of rate constants of reactions, the time-variable method, is proposed in this paper. The method needs only three time points (t), peak heights (Δ) and pre-peak areas (α), obtained from the measured thermoanalytical curve. It does not require the thermokinetic reaction to be completed. It utilizes data-processing on a computer to give the rate constants. Four reaction systems, including a first-order reaction, second-order reactions (with equal concentrations and with unequal concentrations) and a third-order reaction, were studied with this method. The method was validated and its theoretical basis was verified by the experimental results.

Notes: Abstract: The laser-assisted radiative capture between a positron and an antiproton is studied in detail. The theoretical results show that the cross-section for antihydrogen formation is significantly reduced with the application of a laser background. This effect is most marked when the laser polarization is parallelto the incident direction.

Notes: Summary By using factor analysis, cluster analysis and multiple linear regression methods, two parameters, FHF and ECCR, were selected from eight solute-related structure parameters as showing the best correlation with retention data. The relationship between the retention data (k) and these two structure parameters were established for ten O-alkyl, O-(1-methylthioethylideneamino) phosphoramidate compounds under the experimental conditions studied. Retention data (k) for six other compounds that have a high correlation with structure parameters were predicted using these QSRR equations. The system was evaluated by comparing the experimentalk values with the predicted ones. Good agreement was obtained between the experimental and predictedk values.
