Notizen: Extensive multireference configuration interaction calculations were carried out in order to obtain complete two-dimensional (2D) potential energy surfaces for the amidogen (NH2) radical as functions of both N–H bond lengths keeping the bond angle fixed at its experimental ground state equilibrium value. The eight lowest-lying states (four of each symmetry, A′ and A″) were treated mainly for the purpose of using these surfaces in subsequent studies of the photodissociation dynamics. In analogy with the neighboring dihydrides CH2 and H2O the photodissociation of NH2 into NH+H (hydrogen abstraction) takes place preferentially after excitation of the first two Rydberg s states (3 2A′/2 2A1 and 2 2A″/2 2B1) found closely together at about 7.6 eV. The transition dipole moments connecting the ground state with these two states are large (0.44 a.u. and 0.66 a.u.) in the Franck–Condon region, but the behavior of the potentials in the dissociation channel is quite different. The 3 2A′/2 2A1 state is weakly repulsive whereas the 2 2A″/2 2B1 state is strongly repulsive. This will result in differences in the dissociation dynamics for the two states. The next higher state which should play a role in the NH2 photodissociation is the 4 2A″/3 2B1 Rydberg s state at 9.4 eV, because of its large transition dipole moment with the ground state (0.36 a.u.). Close to this state, many Rydberg p states were found. Due to the high density of states in the region above 9.0 eV, interactions of these states are expected and should lead to complicated dissociation dynamics. Contrary to CH2, the two low-lying valence states for NH2 are found at lower energies [2.2 eV (1 2A1) and 6.5 eV (1 2B2)], well separated from the first members of the Rydberg series. These states are less important for the photodissociation of NH2, compared with CH2, because the first state is bound and the transition to the other is dipole-forbidden in C2v symmetry. For H2O, the valence states are missing. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract The kidneys and the liver are the principal organs for the inactivation of circulating organic cations. Recently, an organic cation transporter (OCT1) has been cloned from rat kidney. In order to answer the question whether OCT1 is involved also in hepatic uptake of organic cations, the pharmacological characteristics of organic cation transport in hepatocytes were compared to the characteristics of transiently expressed OCT1. Primary cultures of rat hepatocytes avidly accumulated the small organic cation 3H-1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (3H-MPP+). At equilibrium, the hepatocytes accumulated 3H-MPP+ 56-fold. Initial rates of specific 3H-MPP+ transport in hepatocytes were saturable. The half-saturating concentration was 13 μmol/l. 3H-MPP+ transport was sensitive to quinine (Ki = 0.79 μmol/l) and cyanine863 (Ki = 0.097 µmol/l). Quinine and cyanine863 are known inhibitors of type I hepatic transport of cationic drugs and of renal excretion of organic cations, respectively. To compare the functional characteristics of 3H-MPP+ transport in hepatocytes with those of OCT1, OCT1 has been heterologously expressed and characterized in a mammalian cell line (293 cells). Initial rates of 3H-MPP+ transport were saturable, the Km being 13 μmol/l. The rank order of inhibitory potencies of various inhibitors was almost identical in hepatocytes and 293 cells transiently transfected with OCT1. There was a positive correlation between the Ki's for the inhibition of 3H-MPP+ transport in isolated hepatocytes and transfected 293 cells (r = 0.85; P〈0.01; n = 8). The results indicate that OCT1 is functionally expressed not only in the kidney but also in hepatocytes where it is responsible for the transport of small organic cations which, in the past, have been classified as type I substrates.

Notizen: Abstract Laboratory and field studies onNebalia hessleri andN. daytoni off the toast of San Diego, Southern California, showed that although morphologically similar, the habitats, behavior, and natural history of these two species are surprisingly different. In laboratory experiments, Bach species avoided the other's habitat (sand and mats of macrophyte detritus), and in the field, transplanted individuals failed to survive in the other species' habitat.N. hessleri, which inhabits subtidal mats of macrophyte detritus, survived and reproduced well in the laboratory, was iteroparous, and a large percentage of adults were male. This species occurred at very high densities in the field, and ate essentially everything offered in the laboratory, with a diet in the field consisting largely of plant detritus and carrion. The other species,N. daytoni, differed in nearly every way, it inhabited organically impoverished sands, survived poorly in the laboratory, was apparently semelparous, and a small percentage of the adult population was male.

Notizen: Summary A thriving, polygynous, and probably overwintered colony of the western yellowjacket,Vespula pensylvanica, was collected on 2 November 1994 in Riverside, southern California, and examined in detail. The colony had 14 combs, of combined area 1.30 m2 containing 55,704 small and 10,266 large cells. There were 17 functional, physogastric queens, 70 newly emerged non-reproductive queens, 7300 adult workers, 685 adult males, and c. 17,600 capped cells containing pupae or fully-fed larvae. Dissections of 200 workers showed that none had well-developed ovaries. Hypotheses for the rarity of polygyny inVespula are put forward and evaluated.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the clinical use of covered and noncovered, knitted nitinol stents in patients presenting new stent indications. Methods: Self-expandable, knitted nitinol stents were implanted in four patients for treatment of dysphagia. In two patients who had malignant strictures and had esophago-respiratory fistulae and in one patient with an esophagocutaneous fistula, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-covered stents were implanted. One patient received a noncovered stent, but a retrograde approach through a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) fistula had to be chosen for recanalization of an esophageal occlusion. Two patients received stents for treatment of benign strictures. Results: Recanalization of the stricture and stent implantation were performed under fluoroscopic control without any procedure-related morbidity or mortality. Dysphagia improved in all patients and the esophageal fistulae could be sealed off by covered stents. During a maximum follow-up of 18 months, there was no stent migration or esophageal perforation. Complications observed were stent stenosis due to food impaction (1/4) and benign stent stenosis (2/2). Most complications could be treated by the interventional radiologist. Conclusion: Self-expandable, covered Nitinol stents provide an option for the treatment of dysphagia combined with esophageal fistulae. In combination with interventional radiology techniques, even complex strictures are accessible. For benign strictures, the value of stent treatment has not yet been proven.

Notizen: Abstract We performed studies of multimodal evoked potentials and peripheral sensory and motor nerve conductions in 33 early and 6 late treated patients with phenylketonuria. The studies revealed the following picture: 1. In 27% of early treated patients latencies of visual evoked potentials were increased. The cause for these changes is unknown. 2. Nerve conduction studies showed the presence of a minor sensory neuropathy which in rare cases may also affect peripheral motor nerves. This neuropathy did not have features of a central-peripheral distal axonopathy which argues against a toxic/nutritional causation. 3. Deficits in the central sensory, motor, and auditory pathways were present, but rare in early treated patients. If the results of electrophysiological studies reported by different groups are compared, the emerging picture is very similar and the majority of the – minor – differences is likely to be explained by technical aspects.
