Notes: Abstract Let (X, B) be a Minkowski space (finite-dimensional Banach space) with unit ball B. Using a Minkowski definition of unit normal to a hypersurface, a Minkowski analogue of Euclidean divergence is defined. We show that the divergence theorem holds. Using the Minkowski divergence, a Minkowski Laplacian is defined. We prove that this Laplacian is a second-order, constant-coefficient, elliptic, differential operator. Furthermore, the symbol of this Laplacian is computed and used to associate a natural Euclidean structure with (X, B).

Notes: Abstract In this multicenter, randomized, double-blind study the activity of polyI:polyC12U administered with zidovudine was evaluated in the treatment of HIV infection. Thirty-six HIV-positive, pre-AIDS individuals (100–500 CD4+ cells/mm3) who had had at least six months of zidovudine therapy received polyI:polyC12U (400 or 700 mg) or placebo twice weekly with zidovudine. PolyI:polyC12U subjects with baseline CD4+ counts≥300/mm3 showed a trend towards reduced CD4+ loss versus placebo recipients. PolyI:polyC12U subjects were more likely to exhibit positive delayed-type hypersensitivity responses than placebo recipients. Placebo subjects crossing over to polyI:polyC12U therapy demonstrated improved CD4+ and delayed-type hypersensitivity responses. PolyI: polyC12U subjects with baseline CD4+ counts≥300/mm3 were less likely to develop AIDS than similar placebo subjects. PolyI:polyC12U therapy of HIV-positive subjects restored or stabilized immune function as indexed by delayed-type hypersensitivity reactivity and, in individuals with CD4+ counts〉300/mm3, abrogated CD4+ loss and reduced disease progression. PolyI:polyC12U was generally well-tolerated in this zidovudine-treated population. No subject discontinued therapy due to an adverse reaction or aberrant laboratory parameter.

Notes: The chaotic time oscillations in an incompressible fluid driven into motion by a harmonic time-varying pressure gradient is examined. Special attention is given to centrifugal destabilization of the viscous boundary layer. The basic flow is shown to be linearly unstable. For increasing modulation amplitude, the flow exhibits chaotic oscillations. The energy exchange between subharmonics and superharmonics of the least-stable spanwise wave number is considered. The presence of subharmonic Fourier modes are shown to accelerate the transition to temporally chaotic motion. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The fluorescence microprobe beamline at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) is a unique instrument for analysis of trace elements. The beamline is on a bending magnet port of the synchrotron and uses a pair of multilayer-coated mirrors to focus the x-ray source to a spot size of 1–5 μm2. Since the multilayer mirrors limit the energy bandpass of the system to 5–10%, the trace element sensitivity is significantly improved compared to the use of grazing incidence mirrors. Different pairs of mirrors have been used to operate at 8.5, 10, and 12.5 keV. The detection limits for elements from Si to As will be presented for operation at both 1.5 GeV and 1.9 GeV. Results that illustrate the features of the instrument will be presented from the many samples that have been studies. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In the LBNL x-ray fluorescence microprobe, a synchrotron source of x-rays is demagnified several hundred times using a pair of mirrors in the Kirkpatrick-Baez configuration. These are coated with multilayers to increase reflectivity and limit the pass band of the x-rays striking the sample. With spherical mirrors, the spot size obtained is limited by spherical aberration. This can be corrected by using an initially flat mirror elastically bent by a combination of end couples into an ellipse. By grading the multilayer coatings in d-spacing, the throughput of the focusing system is increased and the pass band narrowed. A pair of such mirrors, installed in the microprobe on a bending magnet at the Advanced Light Source (ALS), achieved focal spots of dimensions 1μm×1 μm at energies of 8.5 keV and 12 keV, with an energy pass band of 10%. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
