Notes: Argon-ion-beam sputtering technique has been applied to deposit barium titanate (BaTiO3) films on silicon wafers at room temperature under vacuum, and then Al/BaTiO3/Si structures were fabricated. Results show that the current and capacitance of these devices are sensitive to the change of relative humidity at room temperature, and saturation absorption (response) time as well as humidity sensitivity of the devices depend on the chemical composition of the BaTiO3 films. For higher annealing temperature and longer annealing time, the oxygen composition increases while fixed charge density decreases. These changes result in lower humidity sensitivity and longer response time. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Simon poplar (Populus simonii) protoplasts were isolated from suspension cells, with protoplast yield of 3.8×107 g−1 F. W. They were cultured in a K8P liquid medium containing 13.57μM 2,4-D, 1.07μM NAA and 0.93 μM KT. Protoplast culture was influenced by the plating density, osmotic pressure, and the sources and amounts of nitrogen and carbon in the culture medium. Multiple shoots were produced from protoplast-derived callus after culture on MS medium containing 4.44 μM BA, 2.32μM KT, 2.28 μM ZT, and 0.54μM NAA. Shoots 2–3 cm in height were isolated from the calli and rooted on 1/2 MS medium. After transplantation into pots, the regenerated plants grew vigorously in greenhouse.

Notes: Abstract Cholesteric liquid crystalline triheptyl cellulose (THC)/ethyl cellulose binary blend membranes were prepared and the effect of pressure on their oxygen enrichment at elevated temperature was investigated using a constant pressure-variable volume method. The oxygen enrichment increased with the increase of transmembrane pressure difference or with slight increase of the THC content in the blend membranes. The oxygen concentration through the membranes increased linearly with decreasing pressure ratio. Air was directly separated through a 17 μm-thick THC/EC(1.5/98.5) membrane to prepare an oxygen-enriched air containing 39.5% oxygen at the flux of 6.99×10−4 cm3 (STP)/s.cm2 at the pressure difference of 0.43 MPa and 85 °C.

Notes: Abstract The dehydration of monoethanolamine was carried out over a series of alkali-exchanged zeolites and aluminophosphate molecular sieves. The main product over all these samples is ethylenimine (EI). The Lewis basicity and Lewis acidity in these samples were characterized by the charges on framework oxygens and the charges on, extraframework cations divided by the square of the atomic radius, respectively, which were calculated from the Sanderson Electronegativity Equalization method (EEM). The relationship between these parameters and the EI yield suggests that the reaction is both Lewis basicity and Lewis acidity dependent. Moreover, the pore structure is also an important factor, which influences the EI formation. However, the deactivation is serious for some of these catalysts and the possible reasons for this deactivation are discussed.

Notes: A prototroph revertant (Rev9) selected from an ATCase- mutant of the URA2 gene containing three nonsense mutations was shown to contain two ATCase coding sequences. We cloned both ATCase coding areas to show that the duplicated locus (dl9) was the only functional one. Its size corresponded roughly to the second half of the URA2 wild-type gene. Sequence analysis of the 5′ end of dl9 indicated that this duplicated sequence was inserted within the intergenic region close to the MRS3 gene and was transcribed from an unknown promoter divergently from the MRS3 gene. The event leading to the revertant strain Rev9 included a rearrangement that increased the size of chromosome X by about 60 kb. In agreement with such a rearrangement, recombination was undetectable in the vicinity of the locus dl9. Genetic mapping confirms that the MRS3 gene is 2 cM distal to the URA2 gene on the right arm of chromosome X.
