    Notes: Apparent p-type conductivity in nonintentionally doped ZnSe layers, grown at high temperature on semi-insulating GaAs substrates, is investigated by Raman spectroscopy. The microprobe technique provides direct evidence for carrier location on the GaAs side of the structures, close to the interface. Line-shape analysis of the coupled LO phonon-plasmon mode for different exciting wavelengths can be achieved, within the model of Hon and Faust [Appl. Phys. 1, 241 (1973)], only when incorporating plasma inhomogeneity. Electronic band bending at the junction in GaAs is deduced from the inferred carrier-density profile. Changes in Raman spectra under strong illumination are shown to proceed from the flattening of the bands through selective carrier photoinjection. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Bacteriocin susceptibilities indicate that during cloacin DF13 uptake the F porin of Enterobacter cloacae plays a similar role to that reported for the OmpF porin of Escherichia coli during colicin A entry. The translocatory activities of these two porins during the bacteriocin uptake can be substituted by the porins D and OmpC, respectively, under conditions not requiring the receptor binding step. Using anti-peptide antibodies, a peptide located in the internal loop L3 of the Escherichia coli OmpF porin was identified in the D and F porins of Enterobacter cloacae. The results demonstrated the existence of a close relationship between porins in terms of both antigenic determinants and bacteriocin susceptibilities.

    Notes: Abstract The maize RNA-binding protein MA16 is a non-ribosomal nucleolar protein widely distributed in different maize tissues. We have previously shown that the MA16 protein binds preferentially to guanosine-and uridine-rich sequences. As a step towards the identification of specific targets with which MA16 interacts within the cell, we investigated the RNA-binding affinities and several other aspects of the protein by using binding assays and immunochemistry. The MA16 protein showed a wide spectrum of RNA-binding activities with lower affinities to several RNAs that was salt and heparin-sensitive indicative of electrostatic interactions, and higher affinities to particular RNAs including rRNA and translatable mRNA sequences. Among the RNAs found associated with MA16 protein was that encoding MA16 itself. This observation raises the possibility that MA16 gene expression could be self-regulated. Immunoprecipitation studies showed that in vivo MA16 was phosphorylated and that MA16 interacts with RNAs through complex association with several proteins. These results suggest that both phosphorylation and interaction with other proteins may be involved in determining RNA-binding specificities of MA16 in the cell.

    Notes: Abstract An intrathyroid primary epithelial spindle-cell tumor with mucous cysts is described in a 9-year-old child. Histologically, this well-circumscribed tumor exhibited a nodular pattern, a prominent spindle cell component with minimal pleomorphism, and well-differentiated mucinous glands within fibrous bands. The spindle cells demonstrated diffuse immunopositivity for cytokeratin and vimentin. Electron microscopy of tissue sections demonstrated that cells contained bundles of cytoplasmic tonofilaments and numerous desmosomes. The light and electron microscopic features and immunohistochemical profile of this tumor were similar to those of recently described thyroid tumors that have been called “SETTLE” tumors (i.e., spindle epithelial tumor with thymus-like differentiation). These uncommon tumors can be considered intrathyroid thymoblastomas and must be regarded as potentially malignant lesions.

    Notes: The cure kinetics of a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)-based epoxy resin with methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride and an accelerator was studied by nonisothermal DSC data. The systems were uncured resin and partially cured with the following extents of cure measured by the residual heat method (αDSC): 0.37, 0.63, 0.81, and 0.90. The activation energy calculated by the Kissinger method increases from 63 kJ/mol for the uncured epoxy to 77 kJ/mol for the partially cured with αDSC = 0.90. Additionally, the activation energy calculated by the isoconversional method shows a dependence on the conversion degree α. The activation energy tends to decreases initially with the conversion degree, possibly due to the autocatalytic effect; then, it passes through a minimum about α = 0.4 and, finally, increases slightly due to the increase of crosslinks which reduce the mobility of the unreacted groups. A simple, consistent method of kinetic analysis was applied. This method enables one to select the most convenient model and the calculation of kinetic parameters. A two-parameter (m, n) autocatalytic model (S̆esták-Berggren equation) was found to be the most convenient model to study the curing of epoxy systems. The results show a dependence of the kinetic parameters on the initial degree of crosslinking of the partially cured epoxy. The exponent m tends to decrease with the extent of cure, while the exponent n remains practically invariable. These results show a change of the kinetic when the initial extent of cure of the epoxy system increases. The In A data, A being the preexponenetial factor in the Arrhenius dependence of the temperature on the rate of conversion, increase with the extent of cure, showing a correlation with the calculated activation energy values. The nonisothermal DSC curves theoretically calculated show a very good agreement with the experimental data. The two-parameter (m, n) autocatalytic model gives a good description of the curing kinetics of epoxy resins with different extents of cure. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
