Notes: Abstract Five copolymer samples containing different mole fractions of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate (EHMA) were prepared by bulk polymerisation at 70°C using 0.2% benzoyl peroxide as an initiator. The copolymer composition was determined by1H NMR spectroscopy. Molecular weight of copolymers was determined by gel permeation chromatography and viscosity measurements. Thermogravimetric experiments were conducted to evaluate activation energy for the degradation of copolymers. Two to four reaction stages for the weight loss were observed in the copolymers. A decrease in thermal stability was observed by an increase in EHMA content.

Notes: Summary One hundred and thirtysix hybrids were developed utilizing four cytoplasmic genetic male sterile lines (V 20A, Zhen Shan 97A, IR 46829A and IR 46830A) and 34 effective restorers. Heterosis, heterobeltiosis and standard heterosis were found to be significant for grain yield and other yield attributing characters in most of the hybrids. The heterosis for grain yield was mainly due to the significant heterosis for the number of spikelets per panicle, test weight and total dry matter accumulation. Interestingly, it was found that most of the higher yielding hybrids were accompanied by significant negative heterosis for harvest index. Hybrids shorter than the shortest parent and earlier than the earliest parent were not observed; hybrids with intermediate to tall plant height having nonlodging habit could be developed. Eighteen hybrids gave more than 20% grain yield than the standard checks. These were evaluated for their stable and consistent yield performance over four seasons. The results on analysis for stability parameters indicated that the hybrids V 20A × Himdhan and Zhen Shan 97A × Mahsuri were stable over environments.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation of solid arsenite by bromate, chlorate and perchlorate ions has been studied at different temperatures and at a constant composition of 1∶2. Arsenite is completely oxidized to arsenate. The fraction oxidized /α/ — time /t/ data are reproducible. The rate of oxidation increases with an increase in temperature. Gamma radiation has no significant effect on the temperature independence of the oxidation process of this particular composition, although delayed oxidation appears with irradiated systems. The kinetics of oxidation process follows the conventional first order. The activation energies for the oxidation of As/III/ to As/V/ are 30.5, 44.0 and 67.9 kJ mol−1, respectively, for bromate, chlorate and perchlorate systems, and for irradiated 29.8 and 67.3 kJ mol−1, respectively, for bromate and perchlorate systems.
