    Notes: Summary Further progress in intraluminal sonography has led to the development of a 6 French ultrasound imaging catheter. This report demonstrates in vivo results using this new technique in a swine. Intraluminal echographic images obtained from the aorta and iliac arteries were of good quality. Artifacts such as image distortion were related to the 20 Mhz mechanically rotating tip motion and caused a loss of image quality. Atherosclerotic lesions could be visualized. The characteristics of the echo image of an atherosclerotic lesion related to the composition of corresponding histological sections of the lesion. Intraluminal sonography may develop into a new diagnostic tool, further enhancing progress in atherosclerosis research and improving the evaluation of coronary arteries and perivascular structures. Combined use with balloon angioplasty might also improve invasive therapeutic procedures.

    Notes: Abstract Serum immunoreactive erythropoietin (siEPO) was determined in cord serum from neonates (n=97, gestational age 36–43 weeks), in healthy children from birth to adolescence (n=260) and in children with haematological (n=30), renal (n=10) and congenital heart diseases (n=70). In healthy children siEPO levels decreased after birth (geometric mean cord siEPO 35.6 mU/ml with 95% range of 17–56 mU/ml in eutrophic, nondistressed fetuses) and reached lowest values during the first 2 months (geometric mean siEPO 11.5 mU/ml). Thereafter siEPO levels increased slightly and were constant between 2 months and adolescence. The geometric mean siEPO for healthy children after birth was 18.8 mU/ml with 95% range of 7–47 mU/ml. These estimates were not significantly different from normal adult values. In newborns with fetal distress (n=15) cord siEPO was significantly elevated (geometric mean 63.0 mU/ml;P〈0.001). In children with haematological disease, siEPO and Hb concentration were inversely correlated (log siEPO (mU/ml)=4.1−0.20×Hb (g/dl);r=−0.62;P〈0.0005). This relationship was significantly different in children with chronic renal failure (log siEPO (mU/ml)=0.67+0.035×Hb (g/dl);r=0.50;P=0.1). In children with heart disease the geometric mean siEPO was 19.2 mU/ml with 95% range 8–65 mU/ml for cyanotic (SaO2〈94%) and 17.7 mU/ml with 95% range of 12–36 mU/ml for acyanotic patients. In this group siEPO values were inversely correlated to the arterial oxygen content (log siEPO (mU/ml) =1.61−2.04×oxygen content (l/l);r=−0.28;P〈0.02).

    Notes: Abstract Forty-eight children and adolescents (mean age 10.5 years, range 1.25–18 years) with clinical evidence of Marfan syndrome were studies. Height and weight percentiles were established. Cardiac dimensions and morphology were studied by M-mode and 2D-echocardiography. At diagnosis left atrial and left ventricular end-diastolic diameter and left ventricular posterior wall thickness were within normal limits except in a few adolescent patients. Interventricular septum was thickened in about 20% and aortic diameter increased in 56% of the patients. An additional 13% of patients developed aortic dilation during the study period. At diagnosis regression analysis revealed a significant (P〈0.05) correlation of the aortic diameter, septal thickness and the posterior left ventricular wall thickness and body surface area. Follow up studies of 19 patients allowed documentation of the development of aortic root dilation.

    Notes: Abstract We have investigated the metabolic adaptations of the chemolithotrophic bacterial symbionts ofRiftia pachyptila. Specimens of the tubeworm were collected by submersible from depths of 2600 m at 13°N on the East Pacific Rise in 1987, and 2450 m at the Galápagos Rift in 1988. Isolated bacteria utilize sulfide, but not thiosulfate or sulfite, as their sole reduced-sulfur energy source. The bacteria rapidly oxidize a wide range of sulfide concentrations (5µM to 2 mM), with maximal respiration rates at concentrations 〉1 mM, and unlike many sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, show no inhibition in oxygen consumption at sulfide concentrations up to 2 mM. Incubations of freshly homogenized trophosome tissue or isolated bacteria with sodium [35S] sulfide and subsequent analysis of sulfur products by high-performance liquid chromatography and flow-through scintillation counting showed that sulfide disappeared almost completely within 1 min. Both soluble and insoluble products of sulfide oxidation were produced. The soluble fraction contained sulfate and polysulfides, with no thiosulfate produced. However, the majority of the radioactivity was in the water-insoluble fraction, mostly as elemental sulfur. Whole-worm experiments under pressure showed a rapid removal of35S-sulfide from the incubation water, with sulfide, sulfate, and polysulfides appearing in the blood within 4 h. There was no utilization of thiosulfate by the whole worms, freshly homogenized trophosome tissue, or isolated bacteria.

    Notes: Abstract Respiring cells of the chemolithotrophic bacterium Thiomicrospira crunogena produced sulfur globules from the sulfane sulfur of thiosulfate below pH 7, and consumed the globules above pH 7. The switch in metabolism was immediate and reversible upon titration of the culture. The consumed sulfur globules remained in a membrane-bound form and were not oxidized unless the medium was depleted of thiosulfate. Sulfur globule production but not uptake was blocked by azide. Anoxia, thiol-binding agents, and inhibitors of protein synthesis blocked globule uptake. Transitory accumulations of sulfite and polythionates appeared to be reaction products of thiosulfate and sulfur globules. A model depicting the pH sensitivity and biochemistry of sulfur globule production and consumption is proposed.

    Notes: Summary Earlier whole-animal experiments have shown that the California killifish (Fundulus parvipinnis) from tidal marshes is highly tolerant to sulfide while the speckled sanddab (Citharichtys stigmaeus) from the open coast is intolerant to sulfide. In the present paper, we demonstrate that the liver mitochondria of the California killifish detoxify sulfide by oxidizing it to thiosulfate and produce ATP in the process. Sulfide oxidation is obligately and stoichiometrically linked to mitochondrial electron transport to oxygen. Concentrations up to 20 μM sulfide stimulate mitochondrial respiration while 50 μM sulfide causes half-inhibition. Sulfide oxidation by mitochondria is adversely affected at pH〈7.4. ATP production is maximal at 10 μM sulfide. The finding of sulfide oxidation coupled to ATP production by killifish mitochondria is unprecedented among vertebrates. In comparison, mitochondria of the specked sanddab oxidize sulfide at a much lower rate. This is the first demonstration of biochemical adaptation to sulfide among coastal marine fishes.

    Notes: Abstract On the basis of Mössbauer isomer shift data, nuclear quadrupole interactions and NMR1J(13C−119Sn) spin-spin coupling constants, the problem of the nonadditivity of the isomer shifts and unexpected quadrupole interactions in tin organic compounds SnX4−nRn (X-halide, R-org. lig.) with the degree of substitution n has been treated by means of pseudopotential HF SCF calculations supplemented by efficient methods for comprehending core reorganizations and nucleus near electronic charge distributions. The nonadditivity of the isomer shifts and the progression of the nuclear quadrupole interactions has been explained by the evident momentum separated electronic reorganization. The clearly proved relation between s electron densities and higher orbital imbalances brings the isomer shift in relation to the valence part of the electric field gradient (EFG). An interrelation between isomer shifts and NMR spin-spin coupling constants has been deduced.
