Notizen: Summary Biological and optical characterization of the Arctic Front (AF), which separates North Atlantic waters from the Greenland Sea Gyre, has not been well studied and we report, herein, the first synoptic description of bio-optical and temperature variability across the AF utilizing both shipboard (vertical and horizontal measurements utilizing the towed Undulating Oceanographic Record, UOR) and satellite (AVHRR) observations of sea surface temperature and visible band reflectances (580–680 nm). The UOR measures depth, temperature, in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence, upwelling and downwelling hemispherical (450, 488 and 550 nm) and vector (488 and 550 nm) irradiances at 10 s intervals during vertical undulations from 2 to 50 m. During a UOR tow on 19 August 1986, the AF was encountered as a sharp boundary with an abrupt change in bio-optical properties within the upper 50 m over a few miles. Temperatures increased from 5.7° to 8.4°C with the average chlorophyll concentration and diffuse attenuation coefficient [K(450)] increasing by factors of 4.1 and 1.8, respectively. Discrete samples for species composition and HPLC pigment analysis, taken within this high pigment region (150 miles in width), indicated that this near surface bloom was a mixed phytoplankton population with moderate concentrations of the coccolithophorid, Emiliania huxleyi. AVHRR visible band imagery showed a high reflectance patch adjacent to the frontal boundary which are normally associated with substantial concentration of coccolithophorids. If our observations on the magnitude and extent of the biomass are typical of the AF, it should have an important role in marine biogeochemical production in this high latitude area.

Beschreibung: The spider crab Hyas araneus L. was reared in the laboratory from hatching of zoea I (ZI) through the first juvenile instar (CI). Within a given moult cycle, individuals of the same age were sampled in intervals of two (ZI, ZII, CI) or 3d (megalopa) for analysis of dry weight, carbon (C), nitrogen (N), hydrogen (H), protein, DNA and RNA. Lipid was calculated from C. Biomass, growth rate and nucleic acid contents showed high variability during each moult cycle and between instars. Instantaneous growth rates of carbon and nitrogen were high in postmoult and intermoult, and low in the premoult periods of each moulting cycle. A shift was observed from high rates of lipid accumulation in the postmoult and intermoult stages to proportionally increasing protein accumulation during late premoult (ZI), or throughout a major part of the remaining moult cycle (in all other instars). DNA was accumulated throughout the ZI and ZII instars, cut it decreased in the late premoult megalopa. It increased again from late intermoult through intermediate premoult in the juveniles. RNA increased continuously during the ZI and ZII, and it decreased in the megalopa, almost to level that had been found immediately after hatching. In juveniles, variation in RNA followed it followed closely those in DNA. Cell multiplication (expressed by DNA increase) dominated over increase in cell size (defined by the C:DNA ratio) during the zoeal instars and in postmoult through early intermoult in the megalopa and CI. When specific (C-related) RNA values and DNA/RNA ratios were compared with instantaneous growth rates in C and N, no general correspondence was detected. The only significant relationship between specific RNA values and instantaneous C or N growth rates was found in the megalopa. The same held for the relationship between the RNA/DNA ratio and growth. Here, in addition to the megalopa, a correspondence with C growth was also found in the CI instar. Our results suggest that variation in nucleic acids may provide useful insights into mechanisms of growth on the cellular level (cell multiplication vs. cell enlargement), however, lack of general correlation with variation in growth rates of Hyas araneus larvae shows that the use of nucleic acids as a measure of growth is probably based upon too simplistic assumptions and hence, does not yield reliable predictions.

Beschreibung: This data collection combines data sets of zooplankton abundances and distribution in the Arctic Ocean during Polarstern cruises since 1984. Data sets cover either abundances of life stages of Calanus species, copepod communities or entire zooplankton communities. During most expeditions depth-stratified samples were taken with a Hydrobios multinet with five or nine nets, thus allowing inter-comparability between the different expeditions. Maximum sampling depth varied greatly among stations due to different bottom depths.
